Atlanta Braves didn’t take long to replace outfielder Nick Markakis, who previously opted out of the 2020 MLB season due to coronavirus concerns. According to CBS Sports’ Danny Vietti, Braves snapped up veteran Yasiel Puig from the free-agent market as his replacement.

The deal will reportedly be finalized after Puig undergoes physical in next couple of days. The financial terms remain undisclosed so far.

Puig split 2019 between Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, finishing the season with .267 batting average, 24 home runs, 84 RBI, and 19 stolen bases. He was the most notable name left available in free agency. 

In the past couple of months, Yasiel Puig received offers from number of teams, including Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles, but turned them all down as unsatisfying. However, Braves came with a big enough number while Puig was probably also attracted by the team’s postseason ambitions.

Puig spent the majority of his MLB career with Los Angeles Dodgers, playing 712 games for the franchise from 2013 and 2018. In 2014, he had his lone All-Star appearance after he posted .296 batting average with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs.

Puig’s career stats include .277 batting average, 132 homers, and 415 RBIs.

Despite being an attractive destination in terms of lifestyle, Miami Marlins are having trouble attracting free agents. Just recently, the team received a rejection from free agent right fielder Yasiel Puig.

Puig recently had a chat with Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald in which he discussed contract offers he received from various teams in recent weeks. According to the 29-year-old, one of them was from Marlins, but he decided to pass on it. 

Explaining his decision, Puig said that Miami simply didn’t offer him enough money. He also added that he didn’t want to deal with the pressure of playing in front of a large Cuban audience who would expect him to go “5-5 every day.”

Yasiel Puig isn’t too worried about landing a contract right away, especially since he thinks that the 2020 MLB season will be canceled due to coronavirus pandemic.  

“Someday, I will sign,” Puig told Ebro. “I don’t know with what team, but right now is not the time to think about baseball.”

After the rumor mill surrounding Trevor Bauer and Yasiel Puig turned for weeks and weeks, Tuesday night saw them move on to new teams in what will go down as one of this year’s biggest moves.

The Reds acquired All-Star starting pitcher from the Indians while sending OF Yasiel Puig and LHP Scott Moss to Cleveland.

San Diego contributed prospects to make the deal a fit, sending OF Franmil Reyes, LHP Logan Allen, and 3B Victor Nova to the Indians to complete the trade. In exchange, they have acquired highly-rated OF prospect Taylor Trammel from Cincinnati.

This trade will shake up the baseball landscape, sending two of the game’s biggest and most controversial figures from one Ohio team to another.

Bauer, who was in the news over the weekend after throwing a tantrum and tossing a ball over the outfield wall in Kansas City after a bad outing, heads to a Reds team that believes that his electric arm will help them compete for a playoff spot in 2020.

Meanwhile, Cleveland acquires the talented Puig, who was ironically involved in a bench-clearing brawl in the Reds’ game against the Pirates on Tuesday night before the trade. He’s expected to help their outfield as they compete for the AL Central crown.

This move will almost certainly go down as one of, if not the, biggest swaps at this year’s Trade Deadline.
