The New York Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole is dealing with nerve inflammation in his throwing elbow and will have to pause throwing for three to four weeks. Cole confirmed this while talking with reporters on Saturday.

Cole experienced a sore elbow earlier this month, and there was a concern that he might have to undergo Tommy John surgery. This would sideline him for the 2024 season and the better part of the 2025 campaign.

Luckily for Cole and the Yankees, an MRI test revealed that the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner is “only” dealing with a nerve inflammation. He will now need to go through a period of rest and rehab but is expected to get back into action in May or early June.

“I think we’ve determined that we just got a little too hot a little too quick in the spring,” Cole said via MLB.com. “We progressed through the normal recovery cycle, but at a certain time we didn’t get back to the baseline which was our target. At that point, it was time to see what was going on.”

Gerrit Cole made 33 starts in 2023, going 15-4 with a 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts. He was named an All-Star for the sixth time in his career while winning his first Cy Young Award.

With Cole being out for the start of the season, Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman said that the franchise feels good about weathering his absence. However, he didn’t exclude the possibility of strengthening the roster with another quality arm.

“I feel good about our internal options. At the same time, it’s never stopped us from having external conversations,” said Cashman.

After striking out on Japanese star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the New York Yankees are shoring up their rotation with All-Star right-hander Marcus Stroman.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Stroman will join the Yankees on a two-year, $37 million deal. The agreement between the two sides comes with a vesting player option.

Stroman confirmed the move on social media, posting a mockup photo of himself in a Yankees jersey alongside the caption: “There’s no place like home.” The 23-year-old player is a New York native who grew up in Medford, Long Island.

Stroman spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs. In 2023, he had a phenomenal start to the campaign, earning his second All-Star nod. However, injury struggles limited him to just six starts in the second half of the season. He ended the season with a 10-9 record, 3.95 ERA, and 119 strikeouts.

Prior to joining the Cubs in 2022, Stroman also played with the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2017 and had an All-Star appearance in 2019. His career stats include a 77-76 record, 3.65 ERA, and 1,091 strikeouts.

The Yankees were on the market for a starting pitcher since the start of the offseason. When their pursuit of Yamamoto failed, the New York team turned to reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell. However, they ended up deciding that Snell’s asking price is too high and settled for an impactful veteran in Stroman.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced on Tuesday that first baseman Anthony Rizzo will be shut down for the remainder of the 2023 MLB season. Rizzo is dealing with “post-concussion syndrome,” according to Boone.

Rizzo has been on the Injured List since early August, but the incident that caused the concussion happened more than two months prior. The 34-year-old collided with San Diego Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. back in May but only had a short absence before returning to action. He was only diagnosed with a concussion later on when he reported to the Yankees’ medical staff that he was feeling “foggy.”

The Yankees initially hoped Rizzo might recover in time to give them a boost for a late playoffs push but decided not to make any risks in rushing him back.

“I would say everything is going well,” said Boone at a press conference. “His most recent checkup was all of the things we’re looking for as far as there’s improvements and where he is, but still hadn’t been cleared yet to play.”

Rizzo played a total of 99 games in 2023, batting .244 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs. He previously signed a new contract with the Yankees during the offseason that pays him $40 million in 2023 and 2024 and has a team option for 2025.

The New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge exited early from his team’s 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Thursday after he began experiencing discomfort in his right hip, the team confirmed.

Judge struggled to settle into the game, striking out in both of his at-bats. Following his second strikeout, he began feeling a “grab in his area” and was replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera in the fourth inning.

“After that headfirst dive the other night, just kind of whole right side has been a little locked up,” Judge explained. “It wasn’t until the second-to-last swing of that at-bat I felt something grab, and they thought it would kind of best just to shut it down and see how we feel after a couple of days.”

Manager Aaron Boone stated that the team would reassess Judge on Friday to see how he is coping with his discomfort. Boone did not give any further details other than to confirm that Judge is not scheduled to undergo any tests.

There is a reason why righty Frankie Montas didn’t play to his standards when he joined the New York Yankees in a trade from the Oakland Athletics last August. According to the 29-year-old player, he “wasn’t 100%” at the time of the trade and was playing through a shoulder injury.

Montas started eight games for the Yankees in 2022 and had a 1-3 record with a 6.35 ERA before being shut down for the season.

“I was trying to push through,” Montas told reporters on Wednesday. “I got traded to a new team and wanted to show what I could do. Things didn’t go the way I was expecting.”

Montas underwent a procedure on his throwing shoulder in February and is now expected to miss at least the first part of the new MLB season. The Yankees didn’t offer any timetable on Montas’ return, but the player is optimistic that he’ll play in 2023 and expects to start throwing in nine or 10 weeks.

Frankie Montas started his career in the majors with the Chicago White Sox but spent the majority of his time in MLB with Oakland. He has a career record of 36–35 with a 3.90 ERA and 611 strikeouts.

The New York Yankees seem to be delivering on their promises to make a run for the top players on the free-agent market this offseason. And they are starting with the shortstop position.

In a chat with reporters on Thursday, the Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman revealed that the team already had talks with the best available free agent shortstops. The list of names includes 2020 World Series MVP Corey Seager and All-Stars Trevor Story, and  Carlos Correa.

According to Cashman, the team is “casting a wide net and having conversations” that would lead to improving the team ahead of the 2022 MLB season.

“So, we’re going to have to come up with a better version than what we ended with. That’s the job,” Cashman said. “We’re trying to assess really what our realistic options are, and so time will tell how that plays out, but I have talked to all of them, yes.”

The New York Yankees are in a rough spot on shortstop ever since losing Didi Gregorius in free agency in 2019. The team tried to patch up the position with All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres, but the move didn’t pan out, and they dropped the experiment midway through the 2021 season.

The Yankees finished third in the AL East in 2021 but still managed to get to the playoffs thanks to a 92-70 record. They were handed an early postseason exit after losing 1-3 to the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card game.

Luis Rojas will remain in New York even after being fired as the Mets manager at the end of the 2021 MLB season. Rojas decided to accept the offer from the Mets’ crosstown rivals New York Yankees and will serve as a third-base coach for them.

The Yankees confirmed the hiring on their official social media on Monday.

Rojas, who is stepping in after Phil Nevin didn’t get his contract extended, is the latest addition to the Yankees’ reshuffled coaching staff. Several new faces are joining manager Aaron Boone in the dugout for the 2022 campaign after the franchise previously opted to part ways with several coaches after a disappointing playoff exit in 2021. This includes Nevin, first-base coach Reggie Willits, hitting coach Marcus Thames, and assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere.

Luis Rojas has been a part of the NY Mets’ organization since 2007. He served in various roles with the franchise before taking over as a manager for the shortened 2020 MLB campaign. In his first year in charge, Rojas led the Mets to a 26-34 record and finished season at the bottom of NL East.

The Mets opened in 2021 with a strong run that saw them being at the top of the division for more than 100 days before experiencing a sharp decline in form. They ended the campaign with a 77–85 record, prompting the franchise to decline Rojas’ option for 2022.

The New York Yankees didn’t hold the disappointing 2021 MLB campaign against manager Aaron Boone, rewarding him recently with a new long-term deal. But the same can’t be said for the team’s coaches.

The Yankees continued to overhaul Boone’s coaching staff this week, announcing that the first-base coach Reggie Willits won’t return for the 2022 MLB season. Willits, who also served as outfield instructor, is ending his four-season stint with the franchise to take a volunteer role with Oklahoma University’s college baseball program.

“I’ve cherished my time with the Yankees, and I’ve grown professionally and personally because of the bonds that have I’ve formed with so many players, coaches and staff,” said Willits in a statement shared with Sports Illustrated.

Before Willits, the Yankees also said goodbye to three other coaches on Boone’s staff. Third base coach Phil Nevin, hitting coach Marcus Thames and assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere all left the franchise after seeing their contract run out and failing to receive a new one.

The Yankees finished the regular part of the season 3rd in AL East but still managed to get through to the playoffs thanks to a 92-70 record. They then faced the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild-Card game, where they suffered a humbling 2-6 loss that ended their postseason earlier than expected.

New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is recovering from his calf injury as planned. According to Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone, Stanton would be ready for spring training games if they were to start today.

Stanton was diagnosed with right calf strain last month and was initially doubtful for spring training. However, according to Boone, the All-Star slugger has been making encouraging progress in recent weeks.

“G is doing great,” said Boone in a recent interview with YES Network. “If we were to start spring training games up tomorrow, he’d probably be ready to go.”

Boone added that Stanton already got pretty close to being in the game shape: “He’s been doing really well, hitting now for a few weeks, but running pretty much at full speed outside and changing directions—doing pretty much all the things necessary to get into a game.”

Giancarlo Stanton wasn’t a contributor for Yankees last season, as he struggled with several injuries. He ended up playing only 18 games, in which he had .288 batting average with three homers and 13 RBIs. The year before, Stanton was hitting .266 with 38 home runs and 100 RBIs in his first season with Yankees.

Boone also provided updates on a number of other players, including the two-time All-Star outfielder Aaron Judge. After being ruled out for two weeks in early March due to stress fracture in his ribs, Judge is still weeks away from being in competitive form. The 27-year-old, however, is healing according to expectations and will be ready for the start of the season.

The 2019 New York Yankees will go down in the MLB history books after they set a league record with home runs in 28 consecutive games on Tuesday.

It took no time at all for the Yankees to break the previous record, established by the 2002 Texas Rangers, on Tuesday evening at Yankee Stadium. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu, the author of 11 long balls so far this season, led off the game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a solo blast off of lefty Clayton Richard that reached the second deck in left field.

Amazingly, right after LeMahieu’s leadoff home run, outfielder Aaron Judge hit another home run of his own to go back-to-back. It was Judge’s first home run since he was placed on the Injured List back in April 21st.

The Yankees’ power has been a big reason why they currently hold a 51-28 record, good for first place in the American League East. Despite injuries throughout the season, they have simply been able to outslug other teams in order to consistently win games.

New York is currently fourth in the league in home runs at the halfway point in the season. Their 130 long balls trail only the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners, and Milwaukee Brewers. They already have six players with double-digit home runs on the season, including Gary Sánchez, who leads the team with 23.
