The top favorites at the 2023 Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, didn’t have too much problem in dealing with their opponents on Monday.

Djokovic got a 7-6(6), 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4 win over Hubert Hurkacz, while Alcaraz won-6 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in his match against Matteo Berrettini. The defending Wimbledon champion and the world’s No. 1 tennis player are through to the quarterfinals and are currently on track to meet in the finals of the tournament.

As always, Djokovic showed that he’s best when the pressure is at its highest. Although not dominating Hurkacz as many believed he will, the Serbian relied on his experience to get the first two close sets. After slipping in the third, he went out and did just enough in the fourth to advance to the next stage.

Djokovic now has 32 consecutive matches at Wimbledon and is hoping to get a record-extending 24 Grand Slams.

Alcaraz dropped the first set, leading many to believe that the Spaniard will have to wait for a bit longer to reach his first quarterfinals at Wimbledon. However, Alcaraz bounced back to claim three straight sets and keep his dream of winning his first Wimbledon title alive.

Nick Kyrgios made a praise-worthy effort, but not even the talented 27-year-old player managed to unseat Novak Djokovic from his Wimbledon throne. Djokovic returned from one set deficit in the finals match of the 2022 tournament to beat Kyrgios in four sets and claim his seventh Wimbledon title and 21st career Grand Slam.

Djokovic had a habit of starting matches slowly during this year’s Wimbledon run, and it was more of the same against first-time Grand Slam finalist Kyrgios. The Australian took the first set by staying strong on his serve and taking advantage of the one break chance Djokovic gave him. However, it turned out that this wasn’t a foreshadowing of a big upset.

Instead, Djokovic, as he always does, tighten up his game and rose to the occasion. At the biggest moment of the match, he would routinely show bigger mental strength than Kyrgios. This included saving three break points while serving for the second set and breaking Kyrgios in the third set at 4-4.

The fourth set was the biggest nail-biter, heading to a tie-break, but at that point, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Djokovic would take it all. He raced to a 6-1 lead and then patiently weathered Kyrgios’ comeback attempt to take it all.

By beating Kyrgios, Djokovic extended his unbeaten run at Wimbledon to 28 matches. He has won the past four tournaments, and his seven Wimbledon titles trail only Roger Federer, who has eight.

“I’ve said it many times, this tournament is extra special for me because it has been the first tournament I ever watched as a kid that got me to start playing tennis,” said Djokovic. “The more you win, it’s logical the more confident, the more comfortable you feel next time you step out on the court. So the run keeps going and I feel very connected with this court and this tournament, without a doubt.”

ATP world number three Alexander Zverev will be unable to participate in Wimbledon this year due to injury, his brother Mischa revealed to the German press. This comes after Zverev was forced to retire from his Roland Garros semifinal match against Rafael Nadal after injuring his right ankle.

During the second set of the match, Zverev slumped to the ground after rolling his ankle. His medical team immediately rushed to the court to help the 25-year-old player as it became apparent that he was unable to walk without assistance. Prior to Zverev’s injury, there was very little separating the two players during this nailbiting encounter, with Nadal winning the first set 7-6 and the second set going into yet another tiebreaker.

Zverev underwent surgery on his right ankle on Tuesday. This comes after an in-depth examination in Germany revealed that all three of the lateral ligaments in the injured ankle were torn. “To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure all the ligaments heal properly, and to reclaim full stability in my ankle, surgery was the best choice. My rehab starts now and I’ll do everything to come back stronger than ever!”, Zverev wrote in an Instagram post.

Following his performance at Roland Garros, Zverev will receive a career-high ranking of 2nd place in the ATP World Rankings next week.

Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam tournament that didn’t have its 2020 edition, with the organizers deciding to cancel the tournament due to COVID-19. However, this scenario won’t repeat in 2021.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club, which is responsible for the event, confirmed plans to stage Wimbledon in 2021. According to the official statement, the tournament will take place from June 28 to July 11.

Depending on the health situation next summer, the organizers will decide whether to allow fans to attend in a full or reduced capacity or to play matches in front of empty stands.

“Staging The Championships in 2021 is our number one priority, and we are actively engaged in scenario planning in order to deliver on that priority,” said AELTC chief executive Sally Bolton.

The cancelation of the 2020 edition of Wimbledon was only the second time in history that the tournament wasn’t played. The only other time was the 1945 edition, which was canceled due to World War II.

Unlike Wimbledon, all three other Grand Slams went through with their tournaments. Australian Open was held before the coronavirus pandemic got to an alarming level, while the US Open and French Open postponed their events and played matches without audience while adhering to all health and safety protocols.
