The tennis world saw one of the greatest matches in the history of the sport on Sunday as a nearly five-hour affair between legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer ended with the Serbian narrowly escaping to win his 16th Major.

His win on Sunday was an absolute thriller with furious back-and-forths between two of the best players to ever hold a racket. While the 37-year-old Federer turned in a valiant and unforgettable effort, he was simply unable to prevail at the end of a marathon fifth-set tiebreaker.

Djokovic did what he always does, withstanding a barrage of Federer aces and serves that most players would’ve simply wilted under. Instead, he stood his ground, volleying expertly to win just enough points to stay alive.

None of the Serbian’s set wins came early, as all three of his ultimate wins came after a tie-breaker. Federer, on the other hand, won the second and fourth sets relatively comfortably, 1-6 and 4-6.

The Serbian’s steely resolve and stamina, however, were enough to propel him to his fifth career win at Wimbledon and to the sixteenth triumph at a Major in his storied career. He now stands only 4 behind tying the man he beat on Sunday for the most Major wins in men’s singles history.

Serena Williams isn’t showing signs of slowing down in her quest to win her eighth Wimbledon. In a  three sets match on Tuesday, Williams managed to outlast fellow American Alison Riske and get a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win to advance in her 12^th Wimbledon semifinal.

Although Riske, currently placed 89 in the world, was playing her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, she still managed to provide Williams with a tough challenge. The two provided the audience an exciting match that was a nail bitter all the way to the end.

With 4-3 in the third and final set, Williams managed to stay calm under pressure and break to claim a 5-3 lead. Riske didn’t manage to recover from this, allowing Williams to finish the match on her own serve.

“You want to come to see some tennis,” – said Williams after the match. “I think, if anything, it speaks for the level of all players, the depth of the women’s field. Everyone is playing incredibly tough.”

Besides chasing her eighth Wimbledon, Williams is also trying to catch up Margaret Court’s record 24 career Grand Slams. Still, Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam wins, doesn’t feel much pressure to make this happen.

“Now it’s like I’ve done everything I need to do,” – she added. “Like, I’ve had a great career, so I don’t feel the pressure as much anymore.”

Williams will now face No.48 Czech Barbora Strycova in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Elina Svitolina is pitted against Simona Halep.
