Longtime college coach Willie Taggart has been hired by the Baltimore Ravens to oversee their running backs, the team confirmed on Wednesday. The veteran coach will take over from Craig Ver Steeg, who coached the running backs over the past three seasons. Ver Steeg, who has been with the Ravens since 2008, could be assigned to a different role.

“We are excited to welcome Willie to the Ravens as our running backs coach,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced. “Willie has been a highly successful and respected college assistant and head coach. He has a proven track record for developing players as a position coach, as an offensive coordinator, and as a head coach. A leader and a highly effective motivator, Willie’s reputation for building strong relationships with his players and fellow coaches will serve our offense well moving forward.”

During his college football coaching days, Taggart was the head coach of Florida State, Oregon, Western Kentucky, South Florida, and most recently Florida Atlantic, where he coached for three seasons before his dismissal in November.

The Ravens also announced that wide receivers coach Tee Martin will now assume the role of the Ravnes’ quarterbacks coach.

When he was hired by Florida State in 2017 as a replacement for Jimbo Fisher, Willie Taggart was supposed to be at the helm of the university’s football program for years to come. But, just 21 games into his tenure with Seminoles, Taggart is out.

Florida announced on Sunday that they have fired Taggart and installed assistant Odell Haggins as interim head coach. The decision was made after Seminoles suffered a surprising 27-10 loss to Miami and fell to 4-5 record.

“I think very highly of Coach Taggart and wish him well, but in the interest of the university we had no choice but to make a change,”  – said FSU president John Thrasher in a statement. “We will support our student-athletes in every way and do all we can to return to the winning tradition that is Seminole football.”

Since arriving at FSU, Willie Taggart struggled to continue the success that the program had under Fisher. Taggart finished his first season with a 5-7 record, which marked the first time Seminoles had a losing year since 1976. They have also missed one bowl invite, the first time since 1981, ending the FBS’s longest active streak.

“Obviously, I am disappointed in the decision today as I believe our future is bright at Florida State,” – said Taggart in a statement posted on his social media. “Building a program and a culture takes time and I regret that we will not have the opportunity to continue to coach these incredible young men.”

Taggart, who signed six-year, $30 million deal in 2017, will earn $17 million in compensation for having his contract terminated ahead of time.

According to reports, the most likely candidates for Seminoles’ head coaching position are Clemson’s co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell, and FAU’s Lane Kiffin.

Coach Willie Taggart’s first game as Florida State University football head coach will go down as one of the most regrettable openings to a college football season as his team suffered an inauspicious 24-3 loss to the Virginia Tech Monday evening.

“We didn’t handle the adversity well. We had a lot of adversity tonight, Taggart said of the defeat. “We had a lot of adversity tonight. We didn’t handle it the way I thought our team will.”

What Taggart expected to be a beautiful opening to his dream job, turned out to be one of Florida’s worst defeats. The last time the Seminoles were subdued to three points in a regular season was in 2008 by that year’s ACC champions, the Demon Deacons.

Last Monday, the Hokies turned up to a sloppy FSU and recorded back to back turnovers (5) before clinching a win in front of a capacity stadium at Tallahassee. The home team was unable to make a touch down throughout the game. The technical bench tried to salvage a touchdown but their series of decisions never worked.

Boos dominated the last quarter and the Hokies fans made things worse by mocking Florida’s Tomahawk Chop. By the end of the game, Seminole’s fans were tweeting #Fire Taggart.

While the defeat was embarrassing, by all means, FSU’s team is on the brink of changing their playing style. Their whole technical bench is made up of newbies with new ideas and systems. By contrast, the Hokies came in with a playing program that has been there for years.

Willie Taggart was named FSU’s head football coach, Florida State University announced on Tuesday. He will be officially introduced by on Wednesday. According to ESPN, the former Oregon coach signed a six-year deal, worth $30 million. He will replace Jimbo Fisher as the FSU Seminoles football team head coach. Fisher recently left the Seminoles to join Texas A&M University football program.

Immediately after Fisher’s departure was announced, Taggart was singled out as the main favorite for the job. The team also interviewed University of South Florida coach, Charlie Strong.

Willie Taggart is Florida native who played as a quarterback at Western Kentucky University. After graduating, Taggart remained with the Hilltoppers football team, serving as an assistant coach in various roles. He was also a running backs coach at Stanford from 2007 to 2009, before returning to Western Kentucky, but this time as a head coach. In 2013 he left Kentucky to take the head coach position at University of South Florida. Taggart joined Oregon University in December 2016. He led the team to a 7-5 record. According to reports, Oregon wanted Taggart to remain and offered him more than $20 million over five years to stay, but he was more attracted to the opportunity to coach in Florida once again.

“We thank Willie for his efforts at Oregon, and we wish him and his family all the best in the future,” – said Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens in a statement.

Oregon Ducks football team, on the other hand, is now beginning the search for a new head coach. Meanwhile, assistant coach Mario Cristobal was named the interim coach. Cristobal served as team’s co-offensive coordinator, run-game coordinator, and offensive line coach. It is important to note that Taggart’s departure is already having consequences on Oregon’s football program since recruits Isaiah Bolden and Braden Lenzy said they will not enroll at the school with Taggart not being there.
