The San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers engaged in an outfielder swap on Thursday. The Giants sent Willie Calhoun to Texas while receiving Steven Duggar in exchange.

The San Francisco team made the move official on their social media and revealed they received cash consideration as part of the deal with the Rangers as well.

The move might seem like a head-scratching one since both Duggar and Calhoun are position players who hit with their left hand. However, they are also both currently going through a rough stretch and might benefit from a change of scenery. Each team probably hopes their coaching staff can get the best out of the player they received and are better off without the player who left through the door.

Calhoun wanted to leave the Rangers for some time now, having officially made a trade request when he was optioned to Triple-A earlier this month. He played 18 games in 2022 before that and batted a career-low .136 with one homer and two RBIs.

Duggar, on the other hand, has posted a .194 batting average with no home runs and four RBIs in 12 games this season. He spent significant time on the sideline due to an oblique injury he suffered back in April.

Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun is going to miss his team’s Opening Day game on July 24th after suffering a hip flexor strain in an intrasquad game on Monday night.

It appeared that Calhoun had gotten lucky after the season was postponed after suffering a hit by a pitch in the face earlier in Spring Training, which would’ve caused him to miss the previously-scheduled Opening Day.

Calhoun himself expressed in a tweet that it just didn’t seem to be in the cards for him to play on Opening Day this season.

The Texas native, who was shipped from the Dodgers to the Rangers as a prospect in a trade for Yu Darvish back in 2017, established himself as a starter in the outfield for his team in the second half of 2019.

In his first extended run of action in the big leagues, the diminutive outfielder batted .269 with 21 home runs and 48 RBI in only 83 games last season.

Calhoun, who is 25 years old, was expected to enter into 2020 as his team’s starting left fielder. However, it appears that he will have to wait to insert himself into Texas’s starting nine after yet another unfortunate injury.

The Rangers have given no timetable for Calhoun’s return, but he could return to action in August.

Now, only a few weeks after the scary injury, Calhoun has been cleared to resume baseball activity.

The 25-year-old Texas native was put out of action on March 8th with his scary injury. He underwent surgery to repair the damage caused by the fastball the next day.

With 26 days having passed since the reconstructive surgery, Calhoun may now begin baseball-specific workouts to advance his recovery process and progress towards being game-ready.

The University of Arizona alum impressed in 2019, his third stint with the big league club. Calhoun played parts of April and May and then from July on with the MLB club, totaling 21 home runs and 48 RBI in only 83 games.

Calhoun, an outfielder, posted a respectable .269/.323/.524 batting line and showed power for the first time as a Major Leaguer.
