Another Dutch great could come out of retirement next season. After winger Arjen Robben returned to professional soccer and signed with Eredivisie side Groningen, now midfielder Wesley Sneijder could follow in his footsteps.

According to Dutch media, Sneijder, who played with Real Madrid and Inter Milan among other teams before retiring in 2018, is thinking about a comeback with his hometown club Utrecht.

Sneijder admitted that he got the idea after Utrecht’s fans made a video in which they invited him to join their club.

“I’ll give it think through, I have already spoken to Jordy (Zuidam, the Utrecht boss),” said Sneijder.

Jordy Zuidam himself admitted that having Sneijder in his team is something he is interested in.

“The ball is in his court, a fit and motivated Wesley Sneijder would interest us,” said Zuidam in a chat with a local newspaper.

While Wesley Sneijder hasn’t played since 2018, there is no doubt that he would be a great coup for the club that hasn’t won a title since 1958. Utrecht’s biggest success in recent memory is Cup trophy from 2004, while they finished the most recent Eredivisie campaign in 6th place.

Sneijder, who has 134 appearances for Netherland’s national team, is best known for his stint with Inter where he was instrumental in the team’s treble-winning campaign in 2010. He later played in Turkey with Galatasaray before finishing his career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Gharafa

One of the best Dutch players in recent history, the 34-year-old Wesley Sneijder has decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional soccer. Sneijder signed a contract with FC Utrecht, the team from his home town until the end of the season but he will not play a single match in the following season. 

A product of the Ajax Youth Academy, Sneijder made his first steps in the most popular club in The Netherlands, signing a trial contract with the club. He impressed the coaches and was given a permanent contract.

Sneijder made his debut for Ajax in 2003 against Willem II in a 6-0 win. In that very same year, Sneijder established himself in the first team, starting against AC Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals. 

He was sold to Real Madrid for a fee of $27 million in 2007, winning the La Liga title in his first season with the club, only to be sold to Inter Milan in 2009 for $15 million. That transfer to Inter made Sneijder one of the best midfielders after winning the Serie A, Italian Cup and the UEFA Champions League title in one season.
