Say goodbye to the Washington Football Team and say hello to the Washington Commanders.

After a name-changing process that took two years, the Washington-based NFL franchise announced on Wednesday that they would be known as the Commanders moving forward. As part of the announcement, the team also unveiled its new uniforms and logo.

In the past two years, the franchise reportedly considered several names, most of them having some type of connection with the military to reflect the team’s bond with the U.S. capital. Aside from Commanders, other options included the Admirals, Defenders, Presidents, Redhawks, and Red Wolves. The last one was particularly popular with the fans but ended up being discarded due to trademark issues.

“What this effort really is at its core is not landing on a name that was going to be unanimously loved by everybody but to start a process by which we can continue to preserve what’s best about the Burgundy and Gold,” said team president Jason Wright. “Those have been colors and a name and a franchise that, when you have trouble talking to each other on other topics, you can come together and hug and high-five and be one while cheering this team on.”

After retiring their previous name, which was considered offensive to Native Americans, in 2019, Washington opted to have a generic identity in the past two seasons. This included adopting the name “Football Team” and having the letter “W” as its official logo. The team also removed their traditional stripes and logo from helmets and replaced them with gold numbers.

The Washington Football Team received some heartbreaking news on Monday. Their star defensive end Chase Young has been diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the 2021 season.

The team confirmed the news on social media.

Young got hurt in the second quarter of Washington’s 29-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year was making a rush on a third-down when he suddenly went to the ground and remained there with a painful look on his face. He managed to limp off the field with the help of his teammates and medical staff, but it was clear at that point that his season might be over.

Speaking about Young’s injury during Monday’s conference, Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera took a moment to praise his development as a vocal presence and admitted that the team would miss this moving forward.

“That’s one of the things you want, a guy who not only says something but at some point will make an impact play,” Rivera said. “That’s the tough part you have to replace. … Somebody will have to step up.”

After becoming the second overall pick in last year’s draft, Chase Young went on to have a statement rookie campaign. He finished 2020 with 42 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one defensive touchdown. This also brought him a Pro Bowl nod.

However, the sophomore year proved to be more challenging for Young. Throughout the first nine games of the season, he only managed to get 1.5 sacks while adding 22 tackles and two forced fumbles.

When Washington decided to adopt Football Team as its nickname in 2020, most people expected it to be a short-term solution. Well, bad news Washington fans; Football Team is here to stay.

In a chat with WJLA on Tuesday, Washington’s team president Jason Wright said that the organization will keep the current name for the 2021 NFL season as well.

“There’s a pretty good chance we will be the Washington Football Team next season,” said Wright.

According to Wright, Washington is still behind in the process of developing the team’s new identity. This makes the use of a placeholder more likely.

“I think next year is fast because of how the brand has to come together through uniforms, through approval processes through the league,” he added. “We could get there quicker, it’s actually pretty hard to get there that quickly because of all the steps that need to happen.”

Washington used the nickname Redskins for the past 87 years, but the team often faced criticism as the name is considered derogatory. The team’s owner Dan Snyder refused to make a change on previous occasions but an overwhelming pressure from the public and the possibility of losing sponsors made him reconsider his stance earlier this year.

The franchise officially announced the retirement of the name „Redskins“ on July 13th. The Football Team nickname was adopted 10 days later as a placeholder until the new name is determined.

Despite demoting Dwayne Haskins from starter to third-string quarterback in a single week, Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera insists that he hasn’t given up on the Ohio State product.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Rivera said that losing the starting job can be beneficial for the 23-year-old quarterback.

“Again, as I said, I have not quit on the kid as far as his development,” said Rivera. “This is an opportunity for him to continue to learn and grow and develop.”

Haskins has been putting disastrous numbers in his first four starts in 2020 while reportedly not working hard enough between games and failing into “poor study and practice habits.” This prompted Rivera to turn to offseason acquisition Kyle Allen as the new starter and install veteran Alex Smith as the backup.

It is believed that in another situation, Washington would ride out the 2020 season with Haskins under center no matter the result. However, with NFC East being wide open for the taking, Rivera decided to make a switch and attempt to make the playoffs with a QB more familiar with his system.

Dwayne Haskins started 11 games for Washington since entering the league as the No.15 pick in 2019. He completed 59.6 percent of his passes in those games while throwing for 2,304 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

It appears that Washington will take more time than expected to find a new name after previously abandoning the nickname “Redskins.” In the meantime, the franchise will reportedly be referred to as Washington Football Team.

The organization will start using the new name once the league approves the change. The name is expected to be in use for the entire 2020 NFL season, but won’t be a permanent solution.

While Washington is set to retain its color scheme of burgundy and gold, the team will go without a logo. Instead, the helmets will have the player’s jersey numbers on them.

Washington decided to change its name after the “Redskins” nickname, which was in use since 1933, was deemed racist and offensive. The team’s ownership officially started the process in late July, announcing that the franchise will adopt both a new name and a new logo.

Previous reports indicated that the organization is considering names like Red Wolves and Red Tails, but the team was so far tight-lipped about the process.
