Nashville FC announced on Monday that they have reached an extension agreement with USMNT center back Walker Zimmerman. According to the club, this new deal will keep Zimmerman with the organization through 2023.

While the financial terms of the deal haven’t been made public, Nashville revealed that they completed the extension by using Target Allocation Money (TAM). Also, the club now holds an option to add another year to Zimmerman’s contract and keep him under control through 2024.

“We acquired Walker knowing that he is one of, if not the top, center backs in Major League Soccer and the US men’s national team pool,” said Nashville general manager Mike Jacobs. “He is an important piece of our club’s present and future, and we wanted to commit ourselves to him to demonstrate that.”

Zimmerman joined Nashville from LAFC in February after the MLS Best XI campaign in 2019. Nashville had to part way with $1.25 million in General Allocation Money (GAM) and a 2020 international roster spot in exchange for the 27-year-old’s services.

So far, Zimmerman made two appearances with Nashville and scored one goal, which was the team’s first in MLS.

”I couldn’t be more excited to represent Nashville SC, on and off the pitch, for the next few years,” said Zimmerman after inking the deal. ”Nashville has shown that it embraces their sports teams with an unrivaled passion. We witnessed that firsthand at our inaugural game in February. My hope is to bring trophies to the city, and our fans, for years to come.”

Walker Zimmerman spent the majority of his professional career with FC Dallas, making 110 appearances in all competition between 2013 and 2017. He also has 12 appearances for the United States on an international level.

Nashville SC still hasn’t played their first game in MLS, but the expansion side is already making waves around the league. The club confirmed on Tuesday that they have acquired U.S. international defender Walker Zimmerman from LAFC in what is one of the biggest moves of the offseason for any team.

According to reports, Nashville will give up a substantial package for Zimmerman including $950,000 in General Allocation Money and an international roster spot in 2020. The total amount might rise to $1.25 million based on certain incentives. This represents a record amount of allocation money involved in a trade for a defender.

“Walker Zimmerman is a player who we had our sights on when we first started to assemble this group, and we are very excited to add his on and off field abilities and leadership to our roster,” said Nashville’s general manager Mike Jacobs in a statement. “He has proven success at the domestic and national team levels and fits the mold of the kind of player and person that our club represents.”

It definitely comes as a surprise that LAFC decided to move on Walker Zimmerman, considering he was a crucial member of the team in recent years. He also signed a four-year contract extension in 2019, which made it seem like he was a part of the team’s long term plans. However, with Nashville’s lucrative offer and the fact that the team is well equipped back, with Danilo Silva, Eddie Segura, and Tristan Blackmon, LAFC decided they would be better off using this opportunity to facilitate some other moves.

Zimmerman spent his entire career in MLS, spending five years with Dallas FC before joining LAFC in 2018. He is also a member of USMNT since 2017, and currently has 12 matches and two goals under his belt.

After seeing Laurent Ciman leaving the club to play in France this summer, LAFC are now facing the possibility of losing another reliable center back. According to MLS Soccer reporter Sam Stejskal, Walker Zimmerman turned down the latest contract offer from LAFC and is looking to make a move to Europe.

Zimmerman, whose contract expires at the end of this season, isn’t against staying in Los Angeles, but he is reportedly “looking for an offer above the MLS maximum budget charge.” That figure for 2019 is probably going to be higher than $500,000; a number LAFC are not willing to go over. The 25-year-old currently makes $235,000.

Sources close to the situation say that there are several European clubs interested in Walker Zimmerman at the moment including teams from Germany, England, and France. Zimmerman, who reportedly already has one written offer from Europe, can immediately sign a pre-contract and commit to join his new team in January or wait until his contract expires and make his decision then.

Walker Zimmerman made his professional debut with FC Dallas in 2013 and went on to play 89 games for the team before being traded to LAFC in late 2017. He played 20 regular season games for the team, all of them as a starter. Zimmerman is also a U.S. international, having made his debut for the senior team in 2017.

The United States men’s national soccer team might be in for a bright future despite missing to qualify for 2018 World Cup in Russia. The U.S. faced Bolivia in an international friendly on Monday night and came out with an easy 3-0 win. To make things more exciting, it was a win that USMNT managed to clinch with the help of its young players. While the team’s brightest young star, Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic, had to miss the game due to an injury, others stepped in.

After Walker Zimmerman scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute, teenagers Josh Sargent and Timothy Weah added a goal each in the second half for a comfortable win. This was the first goal in USMNT jersey for all three goal scorers. Besides them, five players made their international debuts versus Bolivia, with U.S. roster having 11 players who were 21 or less. USMNT’s caretaker manager Dave Sarachan decided to give younger players a chance to show what they know and they responded in an impressive manner.

I thought for good segments of the game, the soccer was pretty good,” – said Sarachan after the game. “I thought in the first half we had a number of opportunities to bury some chances, but we looked young. We looked young in terms of patience and quality, but that’s what these games are all about.

This was an especially eventful game for the 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain youngster Timothy Weah. While he struggled with making correct plays in the first half, Weah bounced back in the second half and put on an impressive display.

[Weah] was all over the shop,” – said Sarachan about his young star. “He looked like a kid who has never played at a higher level, [then] a guy that was looking to come out of a game where he wasn’t even sure if he was hurt, [and later] to flying and beating guys.

Dave Sarachan then decided to reflect on another 18-year-old scorer against Bolivia, Werder Bremen’s Josh Sargent, who made his debut for USMNT.

We’re very thin at the No. 9 position in American soccer in my opinion,” – he said. “So here’s a kid that has progressed throughout all the age groups and [youth] World Cup settings, and I’m not projecting Josh to be a starter from here on in with the men’s team, but he possesses a certain mentality and frame. And why not look at him at a time when you can? We need goal scorers, we need to give them opportunities, and so for me, I didn’t even think twice about it.

However, this young squad will have their true test in the upcoming weeks when it faces Ireland and France in the upcoming friendlies.
