“It was really great to hear the support,” Williams said of the warm reception she received at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I know the fans have been here for me forever, so that’s fantastic to still have that support even more than ever. So it’s a beautiful thing, and I love the Open.”

The winner of the 2000 and 2001 editions of the tournament, Williams won all of her first-round clashes during her first 21 appearances at the Grand Slam. The veteran star struggled on the night as she continued to battle a knee injury.

The US Open announced the wild card invitation recipients for the 2023 tournament. The list is highlighted by two-time US Open champion Venus Williams and two-time US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki.

The 2023 US Open will be the 24th time that Williams plays at Flushing Meadows. She made her debut at the tournament in 1997, reaching the finals in her first attempt. The 43-year-old tennis legend won the US Open in 2000 and 2001 and had another finals appearance in 2002. She has a total of seven Grand Slam wins on her resume.

Wozniacki made the US Open finals in 2009 and 2014, losing to Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams, respectively. She retired from professional tennis after the 2020 Australian Open before making a comeback this summer.

Besides Williams and Wozniacki, the US Open sent out Women’s singles wild card invitations to Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Kayla Day, Clervie Ngounoue, Fiona Ferro, and Storm Hunter.

Men’s singles wild card invitation recipients are John Isner, Alex Michelsen, Michael Mmoh, Steve Johnson, Ethan Quinn, Learner Tien, Benjamin Bonzi, and Rinky Hijikata. Isner is the most prominent name on the list, having reached the quarterfinals at US Open twice in his career.

Former WTA world number one Venus Williams marked her return to tennis on Monday night when she faced Rebecca Marino in the first round of the Citi Open. After starting off the match strong by winning the first set 6-4, Williams slipped up in the second, eventually leading to her defeat of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

“I didn’t think I played well a lot of the times. Just trying to shake off some rust. That’s just to be expected. All I can do is just play another tournament and play better,” Williams remarked following her loss to the Canadian wildcard.

This is the first competitive singles match that Williams has played in a year, with her last outing coming at the Chicago Women’s Open in August 2021, where she suffered a straight sets defeat to Su-Wei Hsieh in the first round. On the mixed doubles front, however, Williams paired up with Jamie Murray at Wimbledon, where they made it to the Round of 16.

Wiliams’ return to the court extinguished prolonged rumors regarding the player’s potential retirement. Although she had not initially intended to play at Wimbledon, the 42-year-old player was inspired by her sister Serena, who was playing in the women’s singles event, as well as fueled by excitement upon seeing the courts of the All England Club.

Venus Williams is out of the 2021 Australian Open. The 40-year-old legend suffered a 0-2 loss to unseeded Sara Errani on Tuesday in a second-round matchup that saw her battle through an ankle injury.

Williams, who was playing her 21st Australian Open, got hurt in the first set. She sprained her ankle while making a play on the net, and it immediately became obvious that the injury was severe.

Still, Williams refused to retire from the game and finished the contest despite this. In the meantime, she also had to deal with knee issues.

This made the job easy for Errani, who didn’t lose a single game after Williams’ injury and ended the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“I was worrying about her more than thinking about how I should play,” said Errani, who will face the No. 68-ranked Hsieh Su-Wei in the third round. “I was thinking, ‘Who knows? Maybe at a certain point, she’ll say enough is enough.’ But instead, she continued right up until the end.”

Venus Williams never won the Australian Open, but she came close on two occasions. Williams made it to the tournament’s finals two times, in 2003 and 2017, but was denied the title by her younger sister Serena on both occasions.

Williams had more success at Wimbledon and the US Open, where she won all of her seven Grand Slams. She also has 22 WTA titles.

Despite being a professional tennis player for as much as 26 years, Venus Williams is still not thinking about wrapping up her illustrious career. Instead, Williams dreams of completing a “Golden Slam.”

Williams, who just turned 40, recently told Tennis Majors that she’s not thinking about retirement at the moment, and is focused on extending the list of her accomplishments. Among those is winning Roland Garros (French Open) and Australian Open.

“You always have to have dreams, so I keep having them,” said Williams. “I would like to win Roland Garros. I was not far from it. The same goes for the Australian Open: I was unlucky, I always missed it a little.”

Williams won Wimbledon five times and the US Open two times but failed to write her name into the winners’ list of the two remaining Grand Slams. She was close a few times, however, playing the French Open final in 2002 and the Australian Open Final in 2003 and 2017. All three times she lost to her sister Serena Williams.

It’s hard to see Venus Williams achieving her “dreams” as her latest Grand Slam title came in 2008 when she won Wimbledon. Williams also didn’t win a singles tournament since 2016, when she triumphed at Taiwan Open. But this won’t stop her from trying.

“I probably won’t be playing as long as what I have already played,” she added. “We’ll see how I feel. I still love winning as much, but when it’s over, it’s over.”

Australian Open 2020 barely started and we already have some big upsets taking place at the first Grand Slam of the year. The biggest of them is undoubtedly the elimination of Venus Williams, who was defeated by the 15-year-old American sensation Coco Gauff. It was Gauff’s second win over Williams at Grand Slams, having also won their previous matchup at Wimbledon in 2019.

Gauff had an impressive opening of the match, which saw the youngest and oldest player in woman’s draw pitted against each other, and claimed a 5-3 lead. Williams managed to field a comeback, forcing a tiebreak.

The tiebreak was a closely-fought battle, but Gauff managed to claim the set after Williams’ mistakes in crucial moments. The second set saw little resistance from Williams, with Gauf taking the deciding set with 6-3 result.

“I definitely was a lot more confident this time,” said Gauff after the match. “I think I was used to playing on big courts, so the crowd — I guess the size of the crowd didn’t startle me as much as last time.”

Coco Gauff is already tipped for future success, having previously reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and third round at US Open, and Williams agreed with the ascertainment after the match.

“She clearly wants it, works very hard, is extremely mature for her age. I think the sky’s the limit for her,” said Williams.

Gauff will now face Sorana Cirstea, 74th ranked tennis player in the world, for a chance to advance to the third round of Australian Open 2020.

US Open 5th seed Elina Svitolina overcame former champion Venus Williams 6-4 6-4 in what was a competitive second-round clash. While Svitolina raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set, Venus showed her resolve by breaking service back and defending two set points. It ultimately took the Ukranian 50 minutes to secure victory in the first set.

With powerful groundstrokes and calm temperament, Svitolina managed to break Venus’s serve and then hold her own to go up 5-3 and serve for the match. While Svitolina earned a massive five match points, Venus yet again refused to give in and managed to hold her service game. Ultimately, Svitolina’s consistency paid off, with a 6-4 win in the second set that saw her progress to the third round at Flushing Meadows.

It was an impressive performance on behalf of both players. Svitolina managed to win 12 out of 14 points in the latter stages of the first set as well as pull off a five-game win streak, Venus, on the other hand, successfully defended 13 out of 17 breakpoints.

Unfortunately for Venus, it was her seven double faults and failure to make the most of her service games that damaged her chances. Svitolina, on the other hand, impressed in all aspects of gameplay and certainly looks like a force to be reckoned with come third-round action.

Sisters Serena and Venus Williams cruised into the second round of this year’s Australian Tournament with wins against opponents Tatjana Maria and Mihaela Buzarnescu Tuesday morning.

Serena, 37, beat Maria 6-0, 6-2 in 49 minutes to kick off her chase for a record 24th Grand Slam in a good way. The 23-time major title champion will become the all-time greatest major title winner should she win this year’s tournament, equaling Australia’s Margaret Court who has 24 titles.

Venus, 38, dug deep to triumph over Buzarnescu after losing the first set 6-7 (3-7) before beating her in the second and third sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Expectedly, Venus comments after the match described the beauty of winning a game after almost losing it.

“It was pretty hairy there. I hope that this tough match will prepare me for the rest of the tournament.”

Serena dominated her German opponent throughout the match. She won the first set in 18 minutes to win her first Grand Slam match since her problematic loss at the US Open final last year. While she lost, Maria was full of praise for the American calling her the “greatest ever.

Serena will face Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard next while her sister will met France’s Alize Cornet.

The Australian Open title definitely won’t stay in the Williams family. After Serena Williams, reigning champion of Australian Open, decided not to participate in the first Grand Slam of the season, her sister Venus quickly finished her participation in the tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 loss against 78th ranked women tennis player in the world, Belinda Bencic.

Although Bencic failed to take a set from Williams in their previous 4 matches, this time she stepped up and defeated one of the tournament’s biggest stars.

I think I had a little bit too much respect, played a little bit careful and safe,” – said Bencic. “This time I really tried to come out and hit it big.

Williams had a bad match with 26 unforced errors and just couldn’t find an answer for Bencic’s play.

I don’t think I played a bad match. She just played above and beyond,” – said Williams. “I just have to give her credit for that.

Things didn’t go well for other U.S. women at the tournament since they’ve lost nine out of their 10 matches in the first round. This included the U.S. Open champion, Sloane Stephens, who now lost eight straight matches. This time, she was defeated by 34th ranked Zhang Shuai.

Tennis is definitely a roller coaster,” – said Stephens after the loss. “But I have learned to just not panic. It will be OK.

CoCo Vandeweghe was a semifinalist in both Australian Open and U.S. Open in the last year loss against Timea Babos in a frustrating match. Irina Falconi, CiCi Bellis, Sofia Kenin, Alison Riske, Taylor Townsend and Jennifer Brady are also out of the tournament. Nicole Gibbs managed to break the U.S. women losing streak by defeating Viktoriya Tomova.

On Tuesday we witnessed another major upset at US Open 2017. Last year’s US Open Women’s Singles champion, Germany’s Angelique Kerber has ended her journey to defend the title by being eliminated in the first round by Japan’s Naomi Osaka. On the WTA World Ranking, Kerber is ranked 6th but is on her way out of the top 10 for sure while Osaka is currently ranked 45th and will see an improvement in her ranking after US Open is completed. Kerber is the first defending champion in the last 12 years to be eliminated so early. Something like this didn’t happen since 2005 when Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Ekaterina Bychkova.

Majority of the matches on Tuesday were canceled because of the rain but the match between Kerber and Osaka was completed. It probably helped that the Japanese tennis player was swift and finished the job in 2 sets beating Kerber 6-3, 6-1. Kerber looked powerless while Osaka strolled through their 65-minutes match. This was also the first time that Osaka has managed to beat a top 10 tennis player.

Compared to the last year, when she was number one ranked female tennis player in the world, 2017 isn’t shaping well for Angelique Kerber. In 2016, besides US Open, she won the Australian Open as well and even managed to reach Wimbledon final. This year, Kerber suffered multiple blows, including elimination from the French Open where she was No. 1 seed. That was the first time in the tournament’s history that No. 1 seeded player was eliminated in the first round.

Now, 4 out of the top 10 seeded tennis players in woman’s singles are out of the US Open. The 9th seeded Venus Williams is pregnant and doesn’t participate in the tournament. The 2nd seeded Simona Halep was eliminated by Maria Sharapova while 7th seeded Johanna Konta suffered a defeat in her match against WTA 78th ranked Aleksandra Krunic.
