Venus Williams is out of the 2021 Australian Open. The 40-year-old legend suffered a 0-2 loss to unseeded Sara Errani on Tuesday in a second-round matchup that saw her battle through an ankle injury.

Williams, who was playing her 21st Australian Open, got hurt in the first set. She sprained her ankle while making a play on the net, and it immediately became obvious that the injury was severe.

Still, Williams refused to retire from the game and finished the contest despite this. In the meantime, she also had to deal with knee issues.

This made the job easy for Errani, who didn’t lose a single game after Williams’ injury and ended the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“I was worrying about her more than thinking about how I should play,” said Errani, who will face the No. 68-ranked Hsieh Su-Wei in the third round. “I was thinking, ‘Who knows? Maybe at a certain point, she’ll say enough is enough.’ But instead, she continued right up until the end.”

Venus Williams never won the Australian Open, but she came close on two occasions. Williams made it to the tournament’s finals two times, in 2003 and 2017, but was denied the title by her younger sister Serena on both occasions.

Williams had more success at Wimbledon and the US Open, where she won all of her seven Grand Slams. She also has 22 WTA titles.

Despite being a professional tennis player for as much as 26 years, Venus Williams is still not thinking about wrapping up her illustrious career. Instead, Williams dreams of completing a “Golden Slam.”

Williams, who just turned 40, recently told Tennis Majors that she’s not thinking about retirement at the moment, and is focused on extending the list of her accomplishments. Among those is winning Roland Garros (French Open) and Australian Open.

“You always have to have dreams, so I keep having them,” said Williams. “I would like to win Roland Garros. I was not far from it. The same goes for the Australian Open: I was unlucky, I always missed it a little.”

Williams won Wimbledon five times and the US Open two times but failed to write her name into the winners’ list of the two remaining Grand Slams. She was close a few times, however, playing the French Open final in 2002 and the Australian Open Final in 2003 and 2017. All three times she lost to her sister Serena Williams.

It’s hard to see Venus Williams achieving her “dreams” as her latest Grand Slam title came in 2008 when she won Wimbledon. Williams also didn’t win a singles tournament since 2016, when she triumphed at Taiwan Open. But this won’t stop her from trying.

“I probably won’t be playing as long as what I have already played,” she added. “We’ll see how I feel. I still love winning as much, but when it’s over, it’s over.”
