Venus Williams is out of the 2021 Australian Open. The 40-year-old legend suffered a 0-2 loss to unseeded Sara Errani on Tuesday in a second-round matchup that saw her battle through an ankle injury.

Williams, who was playing her 21st Australian Open, got hurt in the first set. She sprained her ankle while making a play on the net, and it immediately became obvious that the injury was severe.

Still, Williams refused to retire from the game and finished the contest despite this. In the meantime, she also had to deal with knee issues.

This made the job easy for Errani, who didn’t lose a single game after Williams’ injury and ended the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“I was worrying about her more than thinking about how I should play,” said Errani, who will face the No. 68-ranked Hsieh Su-Wei in the third round. “I was thinking, โ€˜Who knows? Maybe at a certain point, sheโ€™ll say enough is enough.โ€™ But instead, she continued right up until the end.”

Venus Williams never won the Australian Open, but she came close on two occasions. Williams made it to the tournament’s finals two times, in 2003 and 2017, but was denied the title by her younger sister Serena on both occasions.

Williams had more success at Wimbledon and the US Open, where she won all of her seven Grand Slams. She also has 22 WTA titles.
