After giving their forward Alex Tuch a new contract, the team now also signed their defenseman Nate Schmidt to a six-year deal. Schmidt’s new contract, which runs through the 2024-25 season, is reportedly worth $35.7 million in total value or $5.95 million annually.

“He is the kind of defenseman that every team in this league is looking for now,” – said Golden Knights’ general manager George McPhee said. “He is unique, excellent defensively and has become a shutdown defenseman for us playing against the other clubs’ top players. But he also brings a lot of pace to the game, and he brings offense.“

After getting selected by Vegas in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, Nate Schmidt went on to play the best season of his career and was one of the team’s key players on the road to Stanley Cup Finals. The 27-year-old led the Golden Knights in average playing time while managing five goals and 31 assists in the regular season.

“He means a lot,” – added coach Gerard Gallant. “He’s a top player for us. He’s done a great job playing defense for us last year. Obviously he got a real nice contract that he deserves, and we miss him a lot. So he’s a big player for our group, and we’re happy to have him for the long term.“

Although he signed a new deal, Nate Schmidt will have to wait for November 18th, before he can play again for his club. Schmidt was suspended by NHL in September for violating league’s performance-enhancing drug policy and will miss the first 20 games of the 2018-19 season.

Vegas Golden Knights’ coach Gerard Gallant recently provided an update on his team’s injured players, and things don’t look good for Paul Stastny. Although Stastny, who suffered a lower-body injury on October 8th, was supposed to miss only three games, it now looks like that period will be a lot longer. According to Gallant, the 32-year-old reliable center could end up missing up to two months.

“Stastny is going to be longer than we thought,” – Gallant told reporters.

Paul Stastny joined Vegas Golden Knights this summer, signing a three-year, $19.5 million deal after his contract with Winnipeg Jets expired. Stastny played a total of 824 games in NHL, scoring 220 goals and providing 426 assists.

With Stastny out, Vegas Golden Knights will have to find other ways to score, which might be problematic since they are already among the worst teams in NHL in goals per game (1.7). For comparison, they were ranked fifth in the league last season scoring 3.27 goals per game.

“When you win, you play real quick and play real fast,” – explained Gallant. “There’s no hesitation in our game, and right now, we’ve got some of that. We know it as coaches, we know it as players. We’ve just got to be better. Got to work a little harder, each guy.”

Gerard Gallant also confirmed that defenseman Deryk Engelland and winger Alex Tuch wouldn’t be playing in Thursday’s game against Buffalo Sabres. Engelland is day to day while Tuch will miss the upcoming two games and then be reevaluated.

The 30 year old Russian, however, didn’t end his career. He wasn’t happy playing for the Golden Knights and wanted out. Although the team had a trade in place for him, Shipachyov wanted to go home. To make this possible, he had to give the majority of his $2 million signing bonus back.

“Sometimes it just doesn’t work,” – team’s GM George McPhee said. “Sometimes the player you see in Europe isn’t the player you see here, and that’s the risk you take when you sign them and you’re hoping that it works out and it doesn’t always work out.“

Shipachyov’s retirement from NHL means that his salary is now completely off Vegas Golden Knights’ books and that the team has an open spot on their roster. Shipachyov, on the other hand, will most likely sign for KHL’s SKA.

“He needed to play,” – McPhee explained team’s decision to have Shipachyov play for their affiliate team. “Everyone here was playing better than he was. He needed to play and we were willing to have him play in Chicago.“
