The Detroit Pistons made a significant move on Wednesday that might not help them turn around their disappointing 2023-24 season but could help them be a better team in the long run. According to multiple reports, the Pistons acquired forward Simone Fontecchio in a trade with the Utah Jazz.

Playing in his second season in the NBA, Fontecchio established himself as a valuable role player. He is averaging 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting a respectable 39.1% from behind the arc.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that in order to get Fontecchio, the Pistons parted with a second-round pick via Washington Wizards in 2024, forward Kevin Knox, and draft rights to Gabriele Procida.

Fontecchio reportedly had plenty of suitors as the NBA trade deadline approached, but the Pistons ended up putting the best offer forward. The Jazz gets an early second-rounder, considering the Wizards are almost certain to finish the season as one of the worst teams in the NBA while also getting some financial flexibility thanks to Knox’s expiring contract.

The Pistons, on the other hand, see Fontecchio as a mainstay piece in their rotations for years to come. The 28-year-old player will be a restricted free agent in the summer, meaning that the Pistons will have the possibility to retain him even if he ends up deciding to sign a contract with another team.

The Boston Celtics are the best team in the NBA at the moment, and according to recent reports, they want to get even better. NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that the Celtics are currently pursuing a reunion with Utah Jazz’s big man Kelly Olynyk.

The Celtics believe they could use some quality depth on the center position to take the load off of Kristaps Porzingis. Olynyk is a perfect candidate, thanks to his familiarity with the system as well as his ability to stretch the floor.

Olynyk is having a solid season with the Jazz, averaging 7.9 points, 5.5 assists, and a career-high 4.6 assists. The 32-year-old player is also making 41.4% of his shots behind the three-point line, his best mark since turning pro.

However, pulling off the deal won’t be easy for the Celtics. Olynyk is attracting interest from other teams, and the Jazz likely won’t let him leave for cheap. Also, he has a $12 million salary and is on an expiring contract, meaning Boston would have to give up some of their depth for a player that could be a rental.

Kelly Olynyk started his career with the Celtics, who acquired him in a draft-day trade with the Dallas Mavericks in 2013. After four seasons in Boston, Olynyk became a free agent and signed with the Miami Heat. He also had stints with the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons before landing with the Jazz.

“I’ve said it over and over again this year, it’s just my teammates, the coaching staff, they put me in the right spots to succeed,” Markkanen commented following his performance. “My teammates did a great job delivering me the ball and it was just finishing my shots.”

After the Utah Jazz decided to trade their star center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this month, many people assumed the franchise would use the acquired assets to build around All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski reported on Tuesday that the Jazz are taking calls on Mitchell and are interested in moving him for the right offer. This comes after the rival executives were told that Mitchell is unavailable in the aftermath of the Gobert.

Moving Mitchell isn’t something that the Jazz are probably taking lightly, but it looks like the franchise has finally set the course for a rebuild. The organization already sent signals over the weekend that anyone and everyone on their roster is available.

“Things evolve in the NBA, so I couldn’t sit here and say anybody is [untouchable],” said Jazz’s general manager Justin Zanik during a press conference on Sunday when asked if Mitchell is “untouchable” in trade talks.

Donovan Mitchell was initially drafted into the league by the Denver Nuggets with the No. 13 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft before being traded to the Jazz on the draft night. This proved to be an outstanding piece of business for Utah as Mitchell immediately established himself as one of the team’s best players.

During his five seasons in the league, Mitchell made three All-Star teams and never had less than 20.5 points per game on average in a season. He finished the 2021-22 campaign by averaging 25.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and career-high 5.3 assists per contest.

The Utah Jazz have hired ex-New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale but not for the position you might expect. While they need a new head coach, the Jazz opted to make Fizdale a part of their front office instead.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Fizdale will join the organization as associate general manager. The 48-year-old, who has 18-year coaching experience in the NBA, is expected to work closely with CEO Danny Ainge and GM Justin Zanik.

Former Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade, who is one of the investors in the Jazz, reportedly pushed hard for Fizdale to be interviewed for the position of a new head coach. But while Wade’s push did not gain much traction, the rest of Jazz brass liked the idea of having Fizdale, who is well-respected around the league, in a front-office role.

In the meantime, the Jazz reportedly also sorted out their head coaching vacancy. The franchise decided to hire Boston Celtics’ assistant Will Hardy as Quin Snyder’s successor. Hardy, who will become the youngest head coach in the league, is reportedly set to join on a five-year deal.

David Fizdale spent his early coaching days with Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, and the Miami Heat before taking over as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. Fizdale lasted a season and a half in Memphis and was fired following a 7-12 start of the 2017–18 campaign. He also coached the New York Knicks, but this tenure had a similar ending as the one with the Grizzlies.

Quin Snyder is no longer the head coach of the Utah Jazz. The news was confirmed by the team via an announcement sent on Sunday.

According to the Jazz, Snyder resigned from his position. He reportedly had two years left on his deal.

After the news became official, Snyder issued a statement saying that he made a decision to step away because he felt the Jazz need a “new voice” to reach their full potential.

“I strongly feel they need a new voice to continue to evolve. That’s it,” Snyder explained. “No philosophical differences, no other reason. After eight years, I just feel it is time to move onward.”

The Jazz organization made several attempts to convince Snyder to stay and even offered him a huge extension. However, the 55-year-old felt it was in the interest of both sides to move on and start fresh.

The Jazz immediately started with the search for a new head coach and will reportedly cast a wide net to find an appropriate candidate. Snyder, on the other hand, is expected to take a break from basketball before taking a new job.

Snyder spent eight years with Utah and had a 372-264 record during his tenure. He made the playoffs six consecutive times and led the Jazz to three Western Conference Semifinals.

With the NBA Playoffs right around the corner, the time is ripe for yet another definitive top-five ranking. There are only roughly 15 games yet to play, and teams are clamoring for higher positions in the standings. As the stakes grow ever higher, here’s how our top teams stack up at this moment in time.

5. Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers have just won their last five games, and sit comfortably at the three spot in the West. With lower expectations on their shoulders than last season, look for them to make a strong push down the stretch.

4. Philadelphia 76ers

The Sixers are continuing to prove that this just might be their year. Although they’ll have stiff competition in the playoffs, Joel Embiid is looking as dominant as ever.

3. Phoenix Suns

The biggest feel-good story in this league is the emergence of the Phoenix Suns. After sitting at the bottom of the barrel for a decade, Chris Paul has been the medicine they needed to become an apparent contender.

2. Brooklyn Nets

How exactly do you argue with Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving? Add Blake Griffin and LaMarcus Aldridge to the mix, and we’ve got ourselves a serious problem.

1. Utah Jazz

Sitting pretty with the league’s best record for most of the season, the Jazz are on a campaign to prove that they’re the real deal this time. Will it translate in the playoffs? Either way, they deserve the number one spot right now.

We’re inching ever closer towards the All-Star break, and it’s now time to declare where our teams stand. Many interesting things have transpired over the last few months, and here’s how we believe the teams stack up currently.

5. Philadelphia 76ers

They have the best record in the East, and Joel Embiid is looking like an MVP candidate. With a savvy Doc Rivers at the helm, we can’t wait to see how the Sixers shape out this playoffs.

4. Los Angeles Clippers

Kawhi Leonard has been doing what he does best: staying solid and consistent. Along with Paul George who’s been playing excellent, the Clippers may surprise some people down the stretch.

3. Los Angeles Lakers

Still a strong favorite to win the title, but they’ve been slipping recently. With Anthony Davis out for a month, it may be hard for the Lakers to snag that number one seed for the playoffs, but they’re still dominant whenever LeBron’s on the floor.

2. Brooklyn Nets

The Nets acquired James Harden not too long ago, but he looks like he’s been with them forever. The fit has been synonymous, and they truly do look scary when they’re out on the open floor.

1. Utah Jazz

It’s only fair to give the Utah Jazz their due respect at this point in time. They’ve been dominating opponents left and right, they have the best record in the league, and they’re looking like legitimate title contenders. Only time will tell whether or not this ranking will hold water.

We’ve officially passed the one-month mark in the regular season, and it’s now time to follow up on how our favorite NBA teams are doing. Which teams have surpassed our expectations, and which teams are disappointing us? Here’s are the top five teams in the NBA so far.

5. Boston Celtics

This young powerhouse has been getting better every season, and with Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum at the helm, we’re not surprised at how strong they look so far.

4. Philadelphia 76ers

This team has been a huge question mark over the last few seasons, showing strong spurts of potential and then failing to come through in the big moments. But now they’re leading the entire Eastern Conference, which is giving us optimism for their playoff hopes.

3. Utah Jazz

It may seem crazy to rank the Utah Jazz so high, but they’ve earned it. At second place in the tough Western Conference, Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert are holding down a strong fort.

2. Los Angeles Clippers

After last season’s unfortunate playoff defeat, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are coming back this season with a vengeance and something to prove. So far, they’re looking pretty darn impressive with a 13-5 record.

1. Los Angeles Lakers

After winning the championship, the Lakers revamped their roster a tad, which made people wonder how well they’d fare. With the best record in the entire league so far, we’d say they’re faring pretty well.

The Utah Jazz announced over the weekend that they signed All-Star center Rudy Gobert to a contract extension. Reportedly, the extension is for five years and will keep Gobert with the organization through the 2025-26 NBA season.

Gobert’s extension is reportedly worth $205 million, making him one of the highest-paid centers in NBA history.

The 28-year-old Frenchman was eligible for a $228 million super-max extension but agreed to a lower number so the Jazz would have room to build a contending roster around him and fellow All-Star Donovan Mitchell.

Rudy Gobert was drafted by Jazz late in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft and went on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the league. He has two NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards and was selected in the NBA All-Defensive First Team in all of the past four years.

Gobert made his first All-Star appearance last season when he posted a career-high 13.5 rebounds per game while adding 15.1 points and 2.0 blocks on average. He followed that up with 14.2 points and 11.4 per game in the postseason but couldn’t stop Utah from being eliminated in the first round by the Denver Nuggets.

“It means that they believe in me,” said Gobert about the extension. “They believe in what we’ve been building over the years with this whole organization, with Coach [Quin Snyder] and all the guys. For me, it’s an incredible blessing. It’s a very motivating feeling to know that we all share the same vision, and we all share this goal for this state and for this franchise.”
