U.S. Soccer announced on Tuesday that Chelsea’s manager Emma Hayes will be the new head coach of the United States women’s national team.

Hayes has signed a contract through 2027 and will assume her new position after the 2023-24 Women’s Super League season wraps up.

The move was widely expected ever since Chelsea announced Hayes’ departure earlier in November. In the statement announcing the news, the London club shared that the 47-year-old coach wants to pursue opportunities outside club football.

According to U.S. Soccer’s statement, Hayes will become the highest-paid women’s soccer coach in the world. ESPN reports that her salary will be in the neighborhood of $1.6 million that USMNT’s head coach Gregg Berhalter is earning annually.

“This is a huge honor to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history,” Hayes said in a statement. “The feelings and connection I have for this team and for this country run deep. I’ve dreamed about coaching the USA for a long time, so to get this opportunity is a dream come true.”

Emma Hayes has won six Women’s Super League titles and five Women’s FA Cup trophies since taking over Chelsea in 2012. She was named The Best FIFA Football Coach in 2021. Hayes already worked in the United States, coaching the Chicago Red Stars between 2008 and 2010.

Once she takes over the USWNT, Hayes will be tasked to return U.S. women to the top of the soccer world. After decades of dominance, the USWNT experienced a rough stretch in recent years that saw them finish third at the 2020  Olympic Games and be out of the 2023 World Cup in the Round of 16.

United States’ international striker Alex Morgan is taking her talents to England. According to multiple reports, Morgan is set to join Tottenham Hotspur on loan.

Morgan, who is under contract with Orlando Pride, will be at Tottenham until the end of the year. If two sides agree, the loan can be extended until the next summer when FA Women’s Super League 2020/21 season ends.

Tottenham, who will be playing its first season in Super League this year, previously acquired two more players from Orlando. Australian midfielder Alanna Kennedy and Canadian defender Shelina Zadorsky both came on loan in August after not being able to play for their parent team due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Alex Morgan is heading to her second playing stint in Europe. The 31-year-old USWNT star played for Lyon in 2017, making eight appearances for the club and scoring five goals.

Although she hasn’t been quite productive for Orlando in recent years, Morgan has been in stellar form for the national team. She was especially impressed in 2018 when she scored 18 times in 19 games. Overall, Morgan has scored 107 goals in 169 games with USWNT.

The US Women’s National Team was able to beat England 2-1 on Tuesday night to advance to the final of this year’s World Cup. They did this despite Megan Rapinoe’s hamstring strain that kept her from playing in their semifinal bout.

Despite missing Tuesday’s game, Rapinoe says that her hamstring has healed enough for her to play in the competition’s final, which will either take place against the Netherlands.

Rapinoe’s status was up in the air for Tuesday night’s game after suffering a mild strain in the USWNT’s quarterfinal win against France last Friday. She was the star of that game, scoring both US goals to propel her team to a crucial win against one of the competition’s favorites.

She tried to get ready for the match but was simply unable to take the field. She told reporters, “(My hamstring) just tightened up a little bit toward the end. I just wasn’t going to be ready for today.”

The 33-year-old star is confident, however, that she will have recovered sufficiently to play in Sunday’s final in Lyon, France.

When asked after Tuesday’s win about her hamstring and status for the final, Rapinoe said, “It’s feeling much better and I expect to be ready for the final.”

It’s great news for the USWNT, a squad that is looking to win its second consecutive World Cup.

The United States Women’s National Team was given a stark challenge by a plucky Spanish side on Monday, but they eventually pulled through with a 2-1 victory to send them on to the quarter-finals of this year’s World Cup.

The Spanish women played physically and pushed the USWNT to its limits, but were ultimately unable to pull off what would have been a shocking upset thanks to the two penalty kicks that they conceded in the game.

The first goal was scored by the United States with only 7 minutes gone in the first half of the game. Spain’s Mapi León fouled Tobin Heath in the box, and USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe opened the scoring.

Spain wasn’t intimidated, however, as they came back to score after a Jennifer Hermoso strike only two minutes later to tie the game at one apiece.

The score remained there until a controversial penalty was called in the USWNT’s favor in the 70th minute of the match. Spanish defender Virginia Torrecilla appeared to lightly graze Rose Lavelle’s shin with a challenge, a dubious penalty at best. However, after VAR revision, the penalty was upheld and Rapinoe converted once again.

That was enough for a 2-1 victory for the USWNT that was tougher than many expected. Their reward will be a date with tournament co-favorites France on Friday in a blockbuster quarter-finals matchup.
