In a surprising turn of events, Gregg Berhalter will resume his job as the head coach of the United States men’s national team. The news was officially announced by U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) on Friday.

According to the announcement, Berhalter will lead the national team at least through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place in US, Canada, and Mexico.

Berhalter saw his contract expire after the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he led the USMNT to the Round of 16. The USSF decided not to give him a renewal at the time and instead conducted a widespread search that included looking into Jesse Marsch and Patrick Viera as candidates.

In the meantime, it looked like Berhalter was also ready to move on. He emerged as a candidate for the managerial job at Championship side Swansea City while also being courted by a number of other clubs like Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam.

However, the USSF and sporting director Matt Crocker apparently were not wowed by any outside candidates and decided to hand over the reins of the team back to Berhalter. The 49-year-old led the USMNT in 60 matches, recording 37 wins, 12 draws, and 11 losses.

“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to build on our achievements at the World Cup and to contribute to this exciting time for soccer in our country,” said Berhalter in a statement. “The entire group of players and staff have worked incredibly hard to establish our identity on and off the field. We look forward to continuing our journey together to make our fans and our nation proud.”

United States men’s national soccer team coach Gregg Berhalter is set to enter into contract talks with the U.S. Soccer Federation, thereby shedding light on his future with the national team. With the process still in its early stages, rumors have emerged of the Team USA boss also being open to considering jobs at European clubs.

Berhalter led the United States to the World Cup Round of 16, where they lost 3-1 to the Netherlands after emerging as Group B runners-up after remaining undefeated in three group games.

Following the United States World Cup elimination, Berhalter stated that he would like to take some time to “decompress” before making any decisions regarding his future. With his current contract expiring at the end of the year, however, the U.S. Soccer Federation has already expressed its intent to enter into negotiations with the coach.

Berhalter was appointed as manager of the U.S. national team after the team failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Since then, he has secured World Cup qualification for the team as well as led the United States to victory at the inaugural 2021 Concacaf Nations League and the Gold Cup.

The United States men’s national team has been eliminated from this year’s World Cup. Gregg Berhalter’s squad is out after suffering a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on Saturday.

USMNT has played great in the group stage of the tournament, being one of the rare teams that haven’t suffered a loss. But a stout defense that greatly contributed to this was never to be found against the Netherlands. Instead, Tyler Adams and co. looked lost on the field at moments and allowed goals from uncharacteristic mistakes.

The Netherlands dominated the first half, with Memphis Depay and Daley Blind scoring in 10’ and 45’+1’, respectively to give their team a 2-0 lead on the break. Haji Wright gave Americans some home in 76,’ but Denzel Dumfries would go on to score five minutes later and put the game out of reach.

“In the past three games, I’d say we defended the moments really, really well,” said Adams after the game. “And today the three goals come from moments where we’re probably sleeping a little bit.”

USMNT will probably feel that they could have done more, and rightfully so. However, there were a lot of positives. Young core showed it could handle the pressure on the biggest stage and that the future is bright for American soccer.

The United States men’s national team punched a ticket for the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup by beating Iran 1-0 in their final group match on Tuesday. Gregg Berhalter’s team has picked up five points from three matches, which was enough to finish second in Group B behind England.

USMNT entered the match against Iran, needing a win to advance to the Round of 16. Iran, on the other hand, needed only a draw, and it showed in their game. They were happy to sit back, absorb the pressure, and hope they don’t concede.

Iran’s game plan was spoiled by Christian Pulisic, who scored the game-winner in the 38th minute. Weston McKennie crossed the ball into the penalty box, where Sergino Dest headed the ball to Pulisic and allowed the Chelsea star to break the deadlock.

Iran started getting more aggressive after falling behind but lacked vision in front of Matt Turner’s goal to make their efforts count. USMNT didn’t cave under pressure and kept their goal intact for an impressive end of the group stage.

“In the first half, we showed what we can do, soccer wise,” Berhalter said after the game. “We had a really good first half. Second half we showed what we could do determination wise … The guys grinded, gave every single ounce, and we are undefeated going into the next round.”

USMNT will now play the Netherlands, winners of Group A, in the Round of 16. The two sides will meet at Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.

Tyler Adams has been named the United States Men’s National Team’s captain for the upcoming World Cup. Adams has captained the United States nine times during his 32 appearances for the team, including on seven occasions during the team’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

“It’s a huge honor for me, obviously, to be named captain of this team,” Adams stated. “A very young team, but a lot of credit to my teammates because anyone throughout our leadership council can wear that armband and represent us with pride and represent us in the right way.”

At 23 years of age, Adams will become Team USA’s youngest captain at a World Cup since Harry Keough wore the captain’s armband in 1950, aged 22 years, seven months, and 17 days.

Since Gregg Berhalter’s appointment as the coach of the United States national team, captain duties have been split between Adams and his teammates Christian Pulisic, Walker Zimmerman, and Weston McKennie.

While the team has worked under what they call a “leadership council” as of late, Berhalter revealed that they decided that it would provide more direction if a captain was elected before the World Cup got underway.

FIFA completed the group stage draw for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Friday. The United States men’s national team will play in GROUP B alongside England, Iran, and either Wales, Scotland, or Ukraine.

The 2022 World Cup group stage will feature several other intriguing matchups. In Group C, Argentina will face Mexico, Poland, and Saudi Arabia. Group E features the 2010 World Cup winners Spain and 2014 World Cup winners Germany alongside Japan. Group H should also be interesting, with Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea all looking for their place in the Round of 16.

Check out the full draw below.

Speaking about the draw, USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter said he is pleased with the group and believes his team has a good chance of making it to the knockout stage.

“We think it’s a good group,” Berhalter said. “We know every opponent in the World Cup is difficult, but with England you get an exciting matchup, with Iran it’s a diverse opponent and they’ve done well in qualifying and then we’ll have to wait to see who the third opponent is.”

The last team to get into Group B is still undetermined due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Wales already secured its place in the final match of the EURO Play-offs and will play the Scotland vs. Ukraine match winner for the remaining spot in the World Cup. These matches are expected to take place at some point in the summer.

Two more entries to the FIFA World Cup are left to be determined. New Zealand and Costa Rica are set to play in the Intercontinental Play-off 1 for a spot in Group E. The Intercontinental Play-off 2 matchup is Peru vs. Australia or UAE, with the winner going to Group D to face reigning World Cup champions France, Denmark, and Tunisia.

A surprising defeat to Panama in the World Cup Qualifiers earlier this week didn’t leave major consequences to the confidence of the United States men’s national team. The USMNT managed to bounce back right away, claiming a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Costa Rica on Wednesday.

Things didn’t exactly start great for the Americans as Costa Rica scored a goal in the first minute of the game. Ronald Matarrita delivered a cross from the left that found defender Keysher Fuller, who had less trouble than expected to get the ball past Zack Steffen.

Still, the USMNT kept their composure, and the reward came in the 25th minute. Barcelona’s back Sergino Dest received a ball on the edge of the penalty box and then delivered a beautiful shot in the left corner to make it 1-1.

The U.S. continued to pressure Costa Rica, which defended well, a got a breakthrough in the 66th minute. Lille’s Timothy Weah made a great cut into the 18-yard box before making a strong shot that hit the post and was deflected into the net by Costa Rica’s goalie Leonel Moreira.

The USMNT calmly approached the remainder of the match and ended up securing an important win in their bid for the 2022 World Cup.

The win ensured that the U.S. kept the second spot in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers. They now have 11 points, three less than first-placed Mexico and one more than Canada on the third. USMNT’s next match will come against El Tri on November 12th.

First time since 1986, the United States won’t participate in the World Cup. Although the USMNT needed just one point entering the last game of CONCACAF qualifiers versus already eliminated Trinidad and Tobago, they suffered a 2-1 defeat. According to former USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann failure, to qualify for World Cup has set back the soccer in the U.S. for “several years.”

It’s been set back by several years,” – said Klinsmann to German’s Kicker. “That was a huge disappointment. The qualification really was never in doubt, but then the lads had a blackout versus Trinidad and Tobago. They only needed a point, were too sure of that and underestimated that final match.

Still, Klinsmann said that soccer in the United States is still in good shape despite the need to “catch up on” lots of things.

Sure, there are a lot of things to catch up on: in the youth academies, in the universities, in cross-linking the pieces,” – he said. “But MLS is stable after 20 years. It has role-model character. It has a backbone, mostly thanks to [league co-founder] Phil Anschutz. He kept things together when they could have fallen apart.By now, MLS has caught up in the infrastructure. What happened in U.S. soccer in the past 20 years, that is a bit like a fairy tale. It still needs patience, but the league’s getting stronger with every year.

After stints with Germany and Bayern Munich, Jurgen Klinsmann was appointed USMNT’s head coach in 2011. He successfully led the team to 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 in a close match versus Belgium. Klinsmann was fired in 2016 after USMNT opened the final round of CONCACAF qualifiers for 2018 World Cup in Russia with two defeats. LA Galaxy’s Bruce Arena stepped in as his replacement.

According to ESPN’s sources, U.S. national team will get interim coach sometime this weekend, after Bruce Arena decided he will not continue leading the USMNT. U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati spoke to the reporters last week and told them that the decision will be made in seven to 10 days, ahead of the friendly match USMNT will have against Portugal on Nov. 14. If we are to believe the sources, Gulati will stick to his word.

The clear favorite for the interim coach job is U.S. youth technical director and under-20 manager, Tab Ramos. However, it appears that Ramos isn’t so keen on the job. The Sports Illustrated reports that Ramos would take the job of coaching the USMNT but only on the full-time basis, rather than being the interim coach. Gulati, on the other hand, is insisting on the interim label, as the U.S. Soccer Federation looks to take its time in choosing the coach who will lead the campaign for the 2022 World Cup.

If Ramos ends up declining the job, Gulati will search for another candidate among the coaches who are already on the U.S. Soccer payroll. Some of the Bruce Arena’s staff could be in the mix including Dave Sarachan, Pat Noonan, Matt Reis and Kenny Arena. Dave Sarachan would be an obvious choice, since he is the only one with the high-level managerial experience, coaching the Chicago Fire in the past.

Another name that is being speculated as an option is U-17 manager John Hackworth, but the move is unlikely due to the fact that Hackworth is currently leading the U-17 team in the FIFA U-17 World Cup which takes place in India.

USMNT failed to qualify for the World Cup first time since 1986, having lost the key game against Trinidad and Tobago. Now, moving forward, U.S. Soccer Federation will have to be very careful about choosing their approach and get a coach that will make a real difference.

If you are a soccer fan in the United States, then you always had one thing to look for. USMNT participated in the World Cup since 1990 and every 4 years there was a joy seeing them on the big stage. Well, that won’t be the case in 2018, when the World Cup in Russia takes place. The USMNT suffered a defeat against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night, which meant that they dropped to the 5th spot of the CONCACAF qualifiers and won’t participate in the World Cup or additional qualifiers.

USMNT didn’t even need to win the match against Trinidad and Tobago. In order to stay in the World Cup talks, Bruce Arena’s boys only required getting a draw. However, that proved to be extremely tough against a Trinidad and Tobago team that had nothing to play for. With 7 losses and only 1 win, Trinidad and Tobago were dead last and didn’t have a stake in the game. Still, it looked like they were more hungry for the win, scoring twice in the first half, leaving USMNT players scratching their heads. Scoring at the beginning of the second half, Christian Pulisic returned some faith in the positive result, but at the end, it was all USMNT was able to do.

This defeat, combined with the wins of Panama and Honduras, ultimately ended the hopes of Americans that they will be able to watch their national team going head to head with the soccer’s best nations. After this embarrassing performance, one thing is clear to everyone. USMNT needs big changes. Although the United States men’s national team has the best resources in the region, something went wrong. Maybe it wouldn’t be bad too take a page from the women’s national soccer team’ book. They are not just participating in the World Cup, but also have few of them won.
