The United States’ leading infectious disease expert and the public face of the country’s response to the COVID-19 crisis has weighed in on how sports might be able to return this summer.

His path for the return of sports, however, might leave some fans disappointed and upset.

Fauci’s position on the return of American sports leagues this summer is that they must be done with lots of protocols in place in order to keep players, their families, and the population as a whole safe.

That includes the lack of spectators at games, something that would be completely unprecedented on a large scale.

In an interview with Snapchat’s Peter Hamby, Fauci stated that the way to return to sports this summer is to ensure that “Nobody comes to the stadium. Put [the players] in big hotels, wherever you want to play, keep them very well surveilled. … Have them tested every single week and make sure they don’t wind up infecting each other or their family, and just let them play the season out.”

The National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball are the three major American pro sports leagues which are currently awaiting to return after experts decide on a path for a safe way back during the ongoing crisis.

Fans, unfortunately, might have to sit out until 2021 runs around.

The USMNT suffered their first defeat under new interim manager Dave Sarachan as they conceded a 90th-minute goal to go down 2-1 against Ireland in a friendly international on Saturday.

The match also served as a farewell for John O’Shea, who ended his Irish international career aged 37, though he intends to play on in club football.

The US defeated Bolivia 3-0 last week through goals from Josh Sargent, Tim Weah, and Walker Zimmerman. For this match, a number of changes were made. Wonder-kid Christian Pulisic was left out while DeAndre Yedlin was called up.

Bobby Wood gave the US the lead with the final kick of the first half after Matt Miazga headed the ball from Will Trapp’s free-kick and Wood leaped to poke the ball into the net.

Ireland found an equalizer during the 57th minute from a corner as Graham Burke scored.

Alan Judge came off the bench to score a winner for Ireland as he beat goalkeeper Bill Hamid with a left-footed blast.

LA Galaxy defender Ashley Cole is excited to be reunited with Wayne Rooney in America as Rooney’s move to DC United edges closer as he was spotted in Washington on Wednesday.

Rooney, who is the all-time top scorer for England–as well as Manchester United, is reportedly being offered a contract with DC which will run till the end of the 2020 season.

Cole and Rooney were previously team-mates in the England national team and both are widely regarded as being two of the greatest English footballers of the past generation.

Cole is excited about the possibility of playing against his former rival and said: “I think it shows the improvement of the league. He’s a little bit older, but to attract these kinds of players is great for the league. … I’m excited if he does come to play against him again.

It’s always different to the Premier League,” – Cole added. “We’re getting older when we leave [England for MLS], so he’s not going to be the 18-year-old Wayne Rooney. But I think he’s still got enough quality for this league.

Former US Men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann believes that the team could have stood a chance of reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

The US shockingly did not qualify for the event which will soon be held in Russia. This marked the first time in 32-years that they have failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Klinsmann, former coach of the team, was fired in November 2016 after they struggled to deliver during their early qualification matches. He was eventually replaced by Bruce Arena.

The US had hoped that Arena would be able to use his vast managerial experience to help repair their stuttering World Cup qualification campaign but unfortunately, it was not to be for the Stars and stripes.

Arena had previously guided the team to an impressive quarter-final berth during the 2002 World Cup.

“I realistically saw a group growing into the World Cup 2018 that could go into a semi-final,” Klinsmann told Yahoo Sports in an interview published Thursday.
