Novak Djokovic won the US Open men’s singles titles on Sunday after defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York City. This is the Serbian’s 24th Grand Slam title, seeing him surpass Serena Williams for most Grand Slam victories in the Open Era. While Margaret Court also won 24 titles, 13 of them came before professionals were admitted to Grand Slam tournaments.

“To make history [in] this sport is just something truly remarkable and special, obviously, in every possible way, in every possible meaning of the word,” Djokovic claimed after his win. “It’s hard to describe the word.”

Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic’s coach, called the 36-year-old player a “genius” before explaining that he is a one-of-a-kind player who is unique compared to others on the tour. This win means that Djokovic has now one exactly one in every third major that he has appeared in, with 24 titles in 72 major appearances to be exact.

American teenager Coco Gauff won the women’s singles US Open trophy on Saturday; the first Grand Slam of her career. The 19-year-old won in front of her home crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, beating 2nd seed Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“Oh my goodness, it means so much to me,” Gauff exclaimed emotionally after securing her victory. “I feel like I’m a little bit in shock in this moment. That [2022] French Open loss was a heartbreak for me. But I realized God put you through tribulations and trials and that makes this moment even sweeter than I could have imagined.”

In addition to being the youngest American to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999, Gauff also became the first woman since Williams in 1999 to win the tournament after coming back from dropping the first set.

Madison Keys and Carlos Alcaraz both made their way to the semifinals of their respective draws at this year’s US Open on Thursday.

Keys won her women’s quarterfinal clash against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-4, keeping her hopes of alive to make it to the US Open final for the first time since 2017. Novak Djokovic is back at the US Open after missing last year’s tournament. The former ATP world number one marked his return to the final grand slam of the year with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 Alexandre Muller of France on Monday night.

“Well, I knew it was going to be a late night for me, late start of the match,” Djokovic explained after the win, acknowledging that he had to wait for the conclusion of Coco Gauff’s win over Laura Siegemund before he could take to the court. “Nevertheless, I mean, I was excited to go out on the court. The US Open announced the wild card invitation recipients for the 2023 tournament. The list is highlighted by two-time US Open champion Venus Williams and two-time US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki.

The 2023 US Open will be the 24th time that Williams plays at Flushing Meadows. She made her debut at the tournament in 1997, reaching the finals in her first attempt. The 43-year-old tennis legend won the US Open in 2000 and 2001 and had another finals appearance in 2002. She has a total of seven Grand Slam wins on her resume. 

Wozniacki made the US Open finals in 2009 and 2014, losing to Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams, respectively. She retired from professional tennis after the 2020 Australian Open before making a comeback this summer. 

Besides Williams and Wozniacki, the US Open sent out Women’s singles wild card invitations to Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Kayla Day, Clervie Ngounoue, Fiona Ferro, and Storm Hunter.

Four-time US Open winner and number two seed Rafael Nadal suffered an early exit from the Grand Slam on Monday, losing 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 to American Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16. “I felt like the world stopped. The ultra-long tennis matches at Grand Slam tournaments are becoming a thing of the past. Instead, the four Grand Slams— Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open, and US Open—they adopted a new final set rule that will help determine a winner in tie situations much faster.

According to the Grand Slam Board, in the situation that the tennis match is tied at 6-6 in the final set, the players will play a 10-point tiebreak. The player that reaches 10 points first will be crowned a winner. However, the requirement of a two-point lead will still be in place.

The 10-point tiebreak will first be tested at the 2022 French Open and will be used for all the rest Grand Slams this year. If the trial proves to be successful, the rule will become permanent.

“The decision is based on a strong desire to create greater consistency in the rules of the game at the Grand Slams, and thus enhance the experience for the players and fans alike,” the Grand Slam Board said in a statement. “The Grand Slam Board plan to review the trial during the course of a full Grand Slam year, in consultation with the WTA, ATP, and ITF, before applying for any permanent rule change.”

All four Grand Slams previously had different ways of determining a winner when the match was tied in the final set. For example, the Australian Open used the 10-point tiebreak rule, and US Open had the standard seven-point tiebreak.

Wimbledon would extend the final set until one player would get a two-game lead. However, if the set would get to 12-12 at any point, the match would then proceed in a seven-point tiebreak.

Finally, French Open had no tiebreaks and would have the match go on until one player managed to get a two-game lead.

2021 U.S. Open women’s singles finalist Leylah Fernandez faced an early exit from the Australian Open on Tuesday, losing 6-2, 6-4 to wildcard Maddison Inglis in the first round. This is the first competitive match that Fernandez has played since finishing as runner up in the U.S. Open grand slam event.

“Today was just not a good day. Too many mistakes,” the 19-year-old Canadian stated following her loss.
