Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic is your new US Open champion. Djokovic defeated Argentinian Juan Martín del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Sunday night in US Open 2018 final and got his Grand Slam titles count to 14. This is also the 31-year-old’s second consecutive Grand Slam after he won Wimbledon earlier this summer.

Although the scoreline suggests that Novak Djokovic had an easy task in defeating Juan Martín del Potro, the truth was a bit different. Djokovic did manage to take first set comfortably, but then faced a real challenge in the second set.

Del Potro was up 4-3 in the second set and was on the verge of winning a break point in the eighth gem. Argentinian had three break point chances in this epic 20-minute gem, but Djokovic ended up taking it home. This led us to a tie-break, where Del Potro was once again ahead, serving for 1-4. Djokovic denied him that as well, and won the second set with incredible determination.

After this soul-crushing second set, Juan Martín del Potro tried to fight back in the third as well, but he just couldn’t find inspiration after all the chances he ended up missing.

I was playing almost at the limit, all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn’t make it, because Novak [was] there every time.”– said Del Potro after the game and described the match in the best was possible.

This win represents another validation of triumphant return of Novak Djokovic. Djokovic struggled with an elbow injury in the second part of the 2017 season and didn’t look like himself on the tennis court. He decided to undergo elbow surgery in January 2018, returning to professional tennis in March. Since then he won two Grand Slams and Cincinnati Masters and showed that he is one of the best tennis players in the world once again.

There was always part of me that imagined and believed and hoped that I can get back [to] the desired level of tennis very soon,” – said Djokovic about his return. “But at the same time, life showed me that it takes time for good things, it takes time to really build them, for things to fall into place, so you can center yourself, balance yourself and thrive. The last two months have been terrific.”

Serena Williams is through to the US Open 2018 quarterfinals after a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi on Sunday night. The match with Kanepi, who previously eliminated No.1 Simona Halep, proved to be the first real challenge for Williams since she dropped her first set on the tournament. Still, the 36-year-old looked comfortable under pressure and showed why she is considered one of the favorites to go all the way.

It wasn’t an easy match at all. She obviously knows how to play,” – said Williams, who won the US Open on six previous occasions. “I was just happy to get through it.

Serena Williams will meet eight seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova in the next stage of the US Open 2018. Pliskova previously had an easy task against Ashleigh Barty, beating the Australian 6-4, 6-4.

Sloane Stephens joins Williams in the quarterfinals. The 25-year-old, who won US Open in 2017, advances after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Belgium’s Elise Mertens. Stephens efficiently dealt with Mertens, demonstrating a versatile playing style and ability to improvise.

In the US Open 2018 quarterfinals, Stephens will play against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova, the same player she faced in the quarterfinals of the last year’s tournament. Two women were engaged in a nail-biting third set tie-breaker in 2017, so there is a good chance that we will witness another great match.

Thursday turned Friday as 5-time Grand Slam Champion Maria Sharapova edged out Sorana Cirstea in a 6-2, 7-5 thriller under the flashing lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium. The former World No. 1 will face Jelena Ostapenko at the third round of the ongoing US Open.

Sharapova came in following a hard-fought win over Swiss great Patty Schnyder. Having retired from active tennis in 2011 and only coming back in 2015, the 39-year old was the oldest player to set foot in a Grand Slam tournament.

In a match that lasted one hour and fifty minutes, Sharapova and Cirstea treated the crowd to a thriller that consisted of multiple deuces and a comeback that saw the Russian ultimately clinch a spot at the third round of the tournament.

Five aces, 26 winners, and 33 unforced errors were all it took to beat Cirstea, whose 20 winners and 33 unforced errors weren’t enough to hand a victory.

After losing the first set, the Romanian broke serve to commence the second set. She kept her lead until Sharapova started serving. The Russian engineered a comeback with two points of a final and won the final three games to book a match with French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko.

The last time Sharapova met Ostapenko, fans were treated to a three-setter thriller. The former World No.1 was the winner.

British female tennis players faced yet another loss at the US Open as Johanna Konta was knocked out of the competition by Caroline Garcia in the first round on Tuesday.

27-year old Konta followed fellow British tennis star Heather Watson out of the competition after her 6-2 6-2 loss in the first round. Garcia put on a remarkable display to contain the British star that came in after a series of wins over grand slam champion Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko weeks before the US Open.

An Unenergetic Konta

Konta looked unenergetic and incapable of outdoing the dominant Garcia throughout the competition. Perhaps a recent illness that saw the British number one bed-ridden for three days had something to do with her sub-par performance.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old had insisted before the competition she was feeling healthy and ready to perform. She started the match poorly and allowed Garcia to dominate nearly half of her service points.

The French star missed six chances throughout the game and although the British player showed some signs of resistance; Garcia emerged victoriously.

“I didn’t have a good serving day, so that definitely hurt me, especially because she was serving well,” Konta said after the event.

Apart from dominating first serves with a 70% win rate, Garcia also dominated second serves and won 4 out of 10 break points. She looked the better player in every way and won deservedly.
