The Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue will be forgoing his summer vacation to try and help Team USA add another gold medal to its trophy room. The USA Basketball announced earlier this week that Lue joined its coaching staff ahead of the 2023 World Cup and will remain in his role through the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Lue joins Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra and Gonzaga’s Mark Few as assistants who will serve under Team USA’s head coach Steve Kerr. He will replace Phoenix Suns’ Monty Williams, who was forced to leave his duties due to “family obligation.”

“I am truly honored to represent our country and join this great group of coaches,” Lue said. “Coaching USA Basketball has always been a dream of mine.”

Team USA is entering the 2023 World Cup, which will be held in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia in the summer, motivated to redeem itself after a poor performance in the last tournament. At FIBA World Cup 2019 in China, Team USA was eliminated in the quarter-finals and finished seventh.

 Tyronn Lue started his coaching career as an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was named the Cavs’ head coach midway through 2015-16 following the firing of David Blatt, and led the franchise to its first NBA championship in the same season.

Lue wishes he was still at the helm of Cavaliers, thinking he and general manager Koby Altman could have done a good job in Cleveland despite the departure of LeBron James.

“What I tried to build there, I think the culture I tried to set. I thought we could do it together. Koby (Altman) being a young GM, me being a young coach, having young players,” he added.

Lue took over the management in 2015 after working as an assistant to the then head Coach David Blatt. He led the Cavaliers to three straight finals, including winning the title in 2016. On Sunday, club general manager Koby Altman called the 41-year-old to his office and fired him.

The Cavaliers haven’t won a game since Lebron James left for the LA Lakers this offseason. No one expected them to win another championship without Lebron but the team management expected Lue to lead them to more wins.

Cleveland lacks quality players that could fill Lebron’s shoes. Their veterans haven’t been turning up and the youngsters were lacking play time under Lue. Last week, there were reports the former head coach had disagreements with the general manager over fielding veterans in place of rookies.

In an interview with ESPN‘s Rachel Nichols, Lue revealed that the main source of his health problems was anxiety, for which he is currently receiving treatment.

“I’m glad it wasn’t anything serious,” – said Lue. “Just anxiety and the medication I’m on is great. No more chest pains, so everything’s been great.“

Tyronn Lue has been struggling with chest pain for more than a year and underwent series of test before deciding to step away from coaching on March 19 and deal with the issues eventually returning to his duties on April 5. According to Lue, these two weeks absence helped him a lot, as he took the badly needed rest and made lifestyle changes that made his condition better.

“I think for the first time in my career, 20 years, I had a chance to focus on me. It wasn’t as bad as people thought it was. But I did have some chest pains for the last couple of years. And I was just trying to be able to get through it not knowing what was wrong with me,” – Lue revealed to Nichols. “So the two weeks I took off, just finally had a chance to focus on myself and change my diet. Hired a chef. Stopped drinking as many Shirley Temples. And stopped with the sweets and got back to taking care of myself. Now I feel great.“

Since returning to coaching, Tyronn Lue and his Cavs managed to overcome various obstacles and booked their place in the 2018 NBA Finals where they will face Golden State Warriors for the fourth straight season.

Despite a battery of tests, there have been no conclusions as to what the exact issue is. While I have tried to work through it, the last thing I want is for it to affect the team.“

“My goal is to come out of it a stronger and healthier version of myself so I can continue to lead this team to the Championship we are all working towards.” – he added.

Tyronn Lue first experienced problems in December, when he missed the game against the Chicago Bulls. The 40-year old then had to leave the games against the Orlando Magic in February and Saturday’s game against the Bulls because he was not feeling well.

The Cavs announced that assistant coach Larry Drew will take over as interim head coach. Drew previously served as a head coach with the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks, joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014.
