Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson remains on the Houston Texans’ roster, but he won’t be the one leading the team in the 2021 NFL season. Instead, the franchise turned to veteran Tyrod Taylor as their main man under center.

The news was confirmed by Houston Texans head coach David Culley in a chat with reporters on Monday.

“Tyrod Taylor will start for us at quarterback, for sure,” said Culley.

Considering Deshaun Watson’s trade request early in the offseason, the move was widely expected to happen. But Culley didn’t commit to Taylor until now. Besides the duo, Houston also has this year’s third-round pick Davis Mills, who will serve in the backup role. Veteran Jeff Driskel will wait for his chance on the practice squad.

Recent reports indicated that Watson’s days with Texans are definitely numbered but that the franchise isn’t willing to trade the 25-year-old star before they receive an offer they are comfortable with.

Tyrod Taylor spent 2020 with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1, leading the Chargers to a 16-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Ahead of Week 2 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor suffered a rib injury that opened the door for rookie Justin Herbert to take the reins of the offense. Despite recovering a few weeks later, Taylor remained a backup.

Taylor has 9,770 career passing yards with 54 touchdowns from his time with the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Chargers. He had a lone Pro Bowl appearance in 2016.

Despite spending No.6 pick in 2020 NFL Draft on quarterback Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers won’t hand over the reins of the franchise to the Oregon product just yet. Instead, the team will rely on veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor.

This was confirmed by Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn, who told reporters on Thursday that Taylor will “probably be our Day 1 starter.”

The decision to go with Taylor isn’t surprising, considering that due to coronavirus pandemic Herbert didn’t go through usual offseason workouts that would help him get to know the system he will play in. Taylor, on the other hand, is well familiar with Lynn’s schemes as he spent one year with the franchise while the pair also worked together with Buffalo Bills.

Tyrod Taylor played his best football with the Bills, starting 42 games with the franchise between 2015 and 2017. During that period, he threw for 8,857 yards and 51 touchdowns, while making one Pro Bowl appearance. Taylor also had stints with Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns.

Even if he doesn’t get to play this season, Justin Herbert is undoubtedly the Chargers’ quarterback of the future and is expected to replace Philip Rivers as the face of the franchise. Herbert comes to NFL after playing four years with Oregon Ducks, during which he threw for 10,541 yards and 95 TDs alongside 22 interceptions.

Los Angeles Chargers are one of the few NFL teams that don’t have a quarterback position sorted out ahead of the start of the 2020 NFL season. Chargers recently said goodbye to franchise legend Phillip Rivers, and all signs point that they will take a signal-caller in the upcoming draft. If you ask Tyrod Taylor, however, Chargers shouldn’t search past their roster.

Taylor joined the Chargers last offseason to be Rivers’ backup and might be given a chance in case that the team fails to find a better solution. If this happens, the 30-year-old says that the franchise will be set for big things.

“We have a lot of talent on our team,” said Taylor in a recent chat with Orange County Register. “If I am the guy that would be calling the shots, I know for sure that we’ll go out and turn a lot of heads.”

Taylor, who threw just four passes last season, also added that he isn’t afraid to face competition for starting spot in case that Chargers decided to add a proven veteran or a highly-regarded prospect.

“It’s motivating just for the highs and lows of my career,” he explained. “To be drafted in the sixth round, walking into my 10th year, there’s definitely a lot of motivating factors in there being from my time when I was in Buffalo and when I played in Cleveland.”

Tyrod Taylor played with four teams in the past nine years of his NFL career, but was only a full-time starter with Buffalo Bills between 2015 and 2017. During that period, Taylor posted 22-20 record while leading the Bills to a playoff appearance in 2017. He also got a shot to start with Cleveland Brown in 2018, but was benched after three games for Baker Mayfield.

Talyor has 61.6 career completion percentage, throwing for 9,562 yards, and 54 touchdowns. He also added 1,843 yards rushing and 16 rushing touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns made Tyrod Taylor their starting quarterback over 2018’s No.1 overall pick Baker Mayfield at the beginning of the season and were firm on keeping it that way until the end of the season. But Taylor suffered a concussion in Week 3 game against the NY Jets with Mayfield stepping in and leading the Browns to a win.

Tyrod Taylor recovered from the concussion rather quickly, but the never got his starting job back. It wasn’t the smooth transition for the 29-year-old, and he recently told reporters that it’s been “frustrating” for him to go from a starter to a backup.

It is frustrating, but it is a part of the game at the same time,” – Taylor told reporters on Wednesday. “Eight years in, you understand some things happen that you can’t control. Not wanting to complain, just have to continue to keep being myself day in and day out, continue to be a leader and like I said, help the team in any way. This is a different role, but I am here to offer as much knowledge, as well as just trying to share my viewpoint of things, that can help the defense or offense.

But despite his frustration, Taylor isn’t thinking about asking for a trade.

It really has not been a part of my mindset,” – he added. “Just more so have been focusing on getting better each and every day. Those things happen in the league. That really has not been a part of my mindset.

Tyrod Taylor joined the Cleveland Browns in March 2018 from Buffalo Bills, where he was the starting quarterback for three years and earned a Pro Bowl appearance during that time. In two and a half games with the Browns, Taylor completed 48.8 percent of his passes for 462 yards and two touchdowns.
