New Orleans Saints’ head coach Sean Payton appreciates versatility so it isn’t surprising that he identified veteran running back Ty Montgomery as a perfect late offseason move. Saints announced over the weekend that they have signed Montgomery to a one-year deal.

Montgomery remained this long on the free market mostly because of his disappointing 2019 campaign with Jets. He had career lows all over the board, finishing the year with just 193 yards. The 27-year-old will now hope that he’ll manage to resurrect his career with Saints as many players before him.

Montgomery is expected to give Saints another multi-purpose back who can be a factor in the passing game. He will compete for the backup role with veteran Latavius Murray and Saints’ “Swiss army-knife” player Taysom Hill.

Originally drafted into the league as a wide receiver by Green Bay Packers in 2015, Ty Montgomery switched to RB in his sophomore season. This resulted in a career year for Stanford University product, as he had 44 receptions for 348 yards to go with 457 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also added 366 kickoff return yards.

Montgomery, unfortunately, couldn’t build on these encouraging performances as he dealt with rib and wrist injuries in 2017. He split 2018 between Packers and Baltimore Ravens without much success before signing with Jets in 2019.
