The Baltimore Orioles will be without veteran left-handed pitcher Ty Blach during the abbreviated 2020 season after he underwent Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

Blach, who was claimed by the Orioles last August after being placed on waivers by the San Francisco Giants, was penciled in as a potential rotation and bullpen option for the O’s in 2020.

Reports have stated that he suffered the injury earlier this month during the team’s summer camp in preparation for Opening Day later this month.

He is the owner of a career 16-22 record and 4.99 ERA since making his Major League debut in 2016. Blach did spend the majority of 2019 in the Minor Leagues due to a rough patch of performances with the Giants before he was let go.

The Colorado native was expected to be one of the few veteran pieces in an Orioles pitching staff which is rife with young and inexperienced players. However, the O’s will have to rely even more on their unproven arms in 2020 due to this unexpected development.

Blach will undergo surgery at some point this month, and will probably miss most of the 2021 season as well.
