The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with free agent starting pitcher Trevor Williams, adding an arm that will in all likelihood become a member of the team’s starting pitching rotation in the 2021 season.

The Cubs are very familiar with Williams, as the 28-year-old pitcher spent the past five seasons pitching for their NL Central rivals, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Williams was designated for assignment and opted for free agency earlier this offseason.

Williams’s new deal will reportedly pay him $3 million, making him a low-risk option for a Cubs rotation that appears thin after the departures of Jose Quintana and Jon Lester.

The San Diego native was a solid mid-rotation starter for the Buccos in 2017 and 2018, posting a 3.55 ERA over 321 innings during those two seasons.

He did, however, struggle in a 2019 season that saw his ERA balloon to 5.38. Those issues continued and even got worse in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, as Williams’s ERA jumped to 6.18 in 11 starts.

Chicago will now hope that they will be able to coax the good version of Williams back out after his struggles over the past two seasons and add a stabilizing, veteran presence to its rotation for the upcoming season.

Los Angeles Chargers do not have an ideal offseason. The team continues to struggle with injuries as cornerback Trevor Williams injured his ankle during practice on Thursday. The 24-year-old had to have a walking boot installed on his left foot at the end of the practice.

“He’ll bounce back,” – said Chargers’ defensive tackle Brandon Mebane. “It sucks, but it’s part of the game. Sometimes you’re going to have guys go down, and you have to have other guys step up. Trevor’s a great professional, and you know he’s going to do whatever he can to get right back on the field. We’re just going to wait on him and be patient.“

Chargers’ coach Anthony Lynn revealed that Williams sprained his ankle but couldn’t tell how severe the injury is. In his absence, the team will have to rely on Desmond King, Jeff Richards, and Michael Davis to play cornerback.

“If Trevor’s ankle is bad, then I would be concerned about the depth there,” – said Lynn. “But I’m also confident in those young guys behind him. They’re stepping up and making plays in practice, and there’s going to be a nice competition in that group. I think special teams is going to be a determining factor.“

After being signed as an undrafted agent in 2016, Williams went on to have an outstanding 2017, filling in for Verrett. He had 15 starts and recorded 56 tackles, 13 passes defensed, and two interceptions.

Los Angeles Chargers are hoping that Trevor Williams’ injury isn’t serious, because their Pro Bowl cornerback Jason Verrett is already out for the season. Verrett suffered Achilles tear before the start of the training camp. Before this, Chargers also tight ends Hunter Henry and Austin Roberts due to same injuries.
