The Los Angeles Lakers will start the 2021-22 NBA season without one of their veteran acquisitions. The team confirmed on Wednesday that veteran Trevor Ariza is set for a spell on the sidelines after undergoing ankle surgery. Ariza is expected to be out for at least two months.

According to the Lakers’ press release, Ariza will be reevaluated in eight weeks from now. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The injury wasn’t something recent, as Ariza experienced issues with his ankle for the better part of the offseason. This caused him to miss the majority of the Lakers’ training camp.

The Lakers signed Trevor Ariza on a one-year, $2.6 million deal back in August. This marked a return to the franchise for the 36-year-old vet after 12 years. Ariza previously played in LA between 2007 and 2009 and was part of the team that won the NBA Championship during the 2008-09 season.

Since leaving the Lakers, Ariza played for seven different franchises, including the Houston Rockets and the Washington Wizards. He spent the last season with the Miami Heat, suiting up for 30 games during the regular season and averaging 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. He started all four of the Heat’s postseason games as well but only managed to score 4.8 points on average.

The list of names that won’t participate in the NBA restart in Orlando is getting bigger by the day. According to ESPN, Portland Trail Blazers’ veteran Trevor Ariza and Los Angeles Lakers’ guard Avery Bradley will be among the players who opted to sit out the rest of the 2019/20 season.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Ariza made the decision due to involvement in a custody case over his son. The 34-year-old forward was recently granted a one-month “visitation period” that overlaps with the NBA season resume and decided to put his duties as a father first.

The family also played a big part in Bradley’s decision, as the 29-year-old wants to be close to his wife and children during the ongoing health crisis.

“As committed to my Lakers teammates and the organization as I am, I ultimately play basketball for my family,” Bradley told ESPN. “And so, at a times like this, I can’t imagine making any decision that might put my family’s health and well-being at even the slightest risk.”

Trevor Ariza started the season with the Sacramento Kings, playing 32 games with the franchise before being traded to Trail Blazers midway through the season. Ariza immediately emerged as a major contributor for Portland’s injury-riddled roster, as he averaged 11.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game in 21 games.

Avery Bradley emerged as a starter for Los Angeles Lakers this season, helping the team to a No.1 seed in the Western Conference. Bradley averaged 8.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 points before the season was suspended while also playing a crucial role in Lakers’ top three ranked defense.

With Bradley out, Lakers are expected to turn to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope while also exploring free-agent market additions.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in talks to sign Phoenix Suns’ forward Trevor Ariza in a bid to add depth to the squad.

According to ESPN, the Lakers plan to reach an agreement with the Suns and a third team that could take Kentavious Cadwell-Pope. The Suns reportedly are in search for a point guard plus a draft pick as the conditions for releasing Ariza.

Ariza, who once played with the Lakers, joined the Suns this offseason where he signed a one-year deal after a spell in Houston. His deal is worth $15 million, which isn’t bad for a veteran player who averages 10 points per game.

The Lakers face off with the Miami Heat on Monday night. And while the highlight will be a last meet up between Lebron James and Dwayne Wade, the team will be monitoring their players to evaluate just how much depth they need to add to the team.

The Lakers needs some boost in the wing but adding a forward like Ariza will still make a lot of sense to them. Ariza has the talent LA needs and he will be off the team next summer, relieving them off cap space in the process.

The only challenge in completing the deal is finding a third team that will be interested. If that’s done, both the Suns and the Lakers will have gotten what they were looking for.
