The Kansas City Chiefs have signed star tight end Travis Kelce to a new two-year extension. The agreement almost guarantees that Kelce will retire with the franchise he helped win three Super Bowls in the past five years.

Reportedly, Kelce’s extension is worth $34.25 million and makes him the highest-paid tight end in the league. As part of the extension, the veteran will receive a $17 million fully guaranteed salary in 2024, while his salary for 2025 is “mostly guaranteed.”

The Chiefs announced the news on Monday but didn’t disclose the financial terms of the extension.

“Hard to put in words what Travis means to this organization, this city, and he was certainly a priority to adjust his contract for us, and it was something that was important for Clark [Hunt]. So very fitting that Travis [is] now the highest paid tight end in these two years,” said general manager Brett Veach in a statement.

Travis Kelce is already considered one of the best tight ends to ever play. He has nine consecutive Pro Bowl appearances since 2015 while also being named to All-Pro teams seven times. Additionally, he received NFL 2010s All-Decade Team selection and holds a number of records, including most seasons with 1,000 yards receiving by a tight end with seven and most career postseason receptions with 165.

Kelce had a rough season in 2023 by his standards, making 93 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns. It was the first time he failed to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving since 2015. However, he once again came through in the postseason, being pivotal to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run by setting the record for most postseason catches with 32 and having 355 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Don’t expect to see Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce hanging up his cleats for good anytime soon. Kelce brushed off rumors about his retirement in a chat with reporters earlier this week, saying that he has no desire to stop playing football.

The chatter about Kelce possibly retiring after this season was sparked by the interview with Vanity Fair in which the 34-year-old player talked about his plans for the future and how he intends to approach his life after he’s done with the NFL. But as it turns out, those plans are further down the road than many thought.

“I have no reason to stop playing football, man. I love it,” Kelce said. “We still have success. Come in with the right mindset, and I just love the challenge that it gives me every single day to try and be at my best. And like I said, I have no desire to stop anytime soon.”

Kelce added that he intends to see out his current contract, which runs through the 2025 season, and that he’s focused on adding more Super Bowl rings to his resume.

Kelce has been having a down year in 2023 by his standards. He finished the regular season with 93 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns. This was the first time since 2015 that Kelce finished below 1,000 receiving yards.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a big scare on Tuesday when their star tight end Travis Kelce appeared to have suffered a potentially serious knee injury. Fortunately, the injury appears to be a minor one but has put Kelce’s status for the 2023 season opener against the Detroit Lions in doubt.

Kelce got hurt during practice and limped off the field, although he didn’t need any help. The Chiefs immediately sent Kelce to get his knee tested, and the result showed there was no ACL damage.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid said that Kelce is dealing with a “hyperextended knee.” The 33-year-old will undergo further testing on Wednesday after which his status for the Lions’ game will be determined.

When asked about the Chiefs’ plans for the game if Kelce can’t play, Reid said that he expects the “next guy” to step up.

“The next guy steps in, and we roll,” Reid said. “That’s what you do.”

Kansas City has two more tight ends on its roster besides Kelce in third-year player Noah Gray and journeyman Blake Bell. Gray played all 17 games last season, catching 28 passes for 299 yards and a touchdown. Bell, who is in his third year with the Chiefs, was limited to three games in 2022 due to a hip injury.

Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce is widely considered as the best tight end in the league. Despite this, he is making a relatively modest $11.25 million in annual salary, leading many people to consider him “underpaid.”

Kelce is aware of this label and knows that he could get significantly more money on the open market compared to what the Chiefs are paying him. After all, his former teammate Tyreek Hill left Kansas City last year and immediately became the highest-paid player in his position. But it appears that Kelce has other priorities.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Kelce said that he doesn’t mind being underpaid because he loves winning and loves his current situation.

“When I saw Tyreek go and get 30 [million] a year, in the back of my head, I was like, man, that’s two to three times what I’m making right now,” Kelce said. “I’m like, the free market looks like fun until you go somewhere, and you don’t win. I love winning. I love the situation I’m in.”

Kelce made eight consecutive Pro Bowls and had more than 80 catches and 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past seven seasons. He is currently the third highest-paid TE in the league, behind San Francisco 49ers’ George Kittle and the New York Giants’ Darren Waller. But there is also one big distinction between Kelce and Kittle, and Waller. Kelce won two Super Bowl rings, while Kittle and Waller have none.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been declared fit to play in the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. This comes after the 33-year-old player was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report due to experiencing back spasms during the Chiefs’ practice session on Friday morning.

The tight end has enjoyed a strong season to date, making 110 regular-season receptions and gaining 1,338 yards. Kelce was particularly impressive during the Chiefs’ NFL Divisional Round playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, making 14 passes and scoring two touchdowns as the Chiefs bulldozed their way to a 27-20 victory.

Kelce is one of several Chiefs players who have been an injury doubt as the team continues its journey in the NFL playoffs, with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes picking up a high ankle sprain during the early stages of the win over the Jaguars. While he missed out on some plays, Mahomes returned to the field to finish the game, albeit adopting alternative tactics in an effort to avoid aggravating his injury.

The Chiefs proved strong throughout the regular season, winning the AFC West with a 14-3 record.

The Buffalo Bills ended up hurting the Kansas City Chiefs in more ways than one in their Sunday Night Football clash. Besides suffering a tough 38-20 loss at home, the Chiefs also saw four starters end the game with injuries.

The Chiefs’ number one running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire had the most severe injury, being forced to exit the game in the third quarter after being tackled by several Bills players. The injury is reportedly a left knee MCL sprain and will keep the 22-year-old on the sidelines for “a few weeks”, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid confirmed the injury in his post-game conference but didn’t offer many details past that.

“As far as injuries go, Clyde [Edwards-Helaire] hurt his left knee,” Reid told reporters. “We’ll just see how it goes overnight here and into tomorrow.”

Edwards-Helaire has 304 rushing yards through the first five games in 2021. The Chiefs will likely turn to veteran duo Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon in his absence.

Reid also revealed that Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill, star tight end Travis Kelce, and guard Joe Thuney picked up injuries as well. Hill hurt his knee, Kelce “a little bit of a stinger,” while Thuney suffered a hand fracture. All three players managed to finish the game and reportedly won’t miss time.

The Chiefs find themselves in a tough situation, and any further absence of their key players could be devastating for their Super Bowl aspirations. They currently sit at the bottom of AFC West and only have a 2-3 record to show for in the first five weeks.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce continues to prove that he’s one of the best tight ends in the history of the NFL.

This Sunday, in Kansas City’s win against the Atlanta Falcons, Kelce finished the game with 98 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven catches. Kelce, with one game left to play, now has 1,416 receiving yards on the season, which is a new record for tight ends.

He breaks the record set by San Francisco tight end George Kittle, who set the record in 2018 when he had 1,377 receiving yards on the season. Kittle was unable to compete with Kelce this year, spending most of the year recovering from a broken foot.

This is also the second time that Kelce has owned this record. Kelce actually set a new record in 2018 that was broken about an hour later by Kittle. The two squared off in last year’s Super Bowl, which Kansas City won 31-20.

But this isn’t the only record that Kelce set on Sunday. He also became the first tight end in the history of the NFL with multiple seasons where he caught 100 passes.

Kelce is looking to also become the first tight end in history to lead the league in receiving yards. He has one more week to try and stay ahead of two star wide receivers, Arizona’s DeAndre Hopkins and Green Bay’s Davante Adams.

After the San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle agreed to a five-year, $75 million extension with a $30 million guarantee at signing, a $40 million guarantee for injury, and a cool $18 million signing bonus, the most productive tight end over the last several years, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, also got a big extension.

The Chiefs continue this offseason’s trend of making sure to sign their key pieces to new deals in order to make a run for another Super Bowl championship this year.

Kelce agreed to a four-year extension that will net him $57.25 million with an average annual wage of $14.3 million, which is just under the $15 million per year that Kittle is getting.

Kelce is a four-time All-Pro and has spent his entire seven-year NFL career with the Chiefs, who obviously wanted to make sure that their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ top pass target gets taken care of properly.
