La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid learned some devastating news on Thursday. Their starting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered an ACL injury and will miss the entire 2023-24 campaign as a result.

Courtois was hurt during practice on Tuesday and is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days.

“After the tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois, he’s been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee,” said the Spanish club in a statement. “The player will undergo surgery in the coming days.”

Courtois himself addressed the injury in a post shared on Instagram.

“You never expect to go through something like this, but now it’s time to accept it and do everything to overcome it and come back even stronger,” he wrote. “Thanks to everyone for the energy, affection, and support, I assure you it motivates me to recover as soon as possible.”

After his time with Real Madrid got off to a rough start, Thibaut Courtois regained his status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers in recent seasons. He conceded 49 goals in 49 matches in all competitions in 2022-23 while keeping 17 clean sheets. He also won the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper award for 2022.

With Courtois out, it remains to be seen how Real proceeds forward. They only have backup Andriy Lunin as a dependable option on goal, and it is expected that they might look to make a late transfer addition. One of the options that could be intriguing is Spaniard David De Gea, who is currently a free agent after his contract with Manchester United expired.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois came out with a controversial take on the 2019-20 La Liga season in the case that play isn’t able to be resumed and the season isn’t completed.

Courtois, whose Real Madrid side stands two points behind FC Barcelona in the table after 27 matches, doesn’t see the Blaugrana as the league’s best team despite their advantage in the standings over Los Blancos.

“If they decide to stop the competition and Barcelona are named champions, I wouldn’t find it completely right.” There has been speculation that, due to the ongoing pandemic, Spanish soccer won’t be able to restart this season.

While France’s Ligue 1 decided to name Paris Saint-Germain champions after canceling the rest of the season, the situation is a bit different considering PSG’s substantial lead in the standings.

La Liga might have a difficult time naming Barcelona champions despite their lead in the standings. Courtois certainly doesn’t see them as being the stronger side after Real Madrid won and drew their two games against them this season.

The Spanish league will attempt to return to training next week and restart the league competition in June in an attempt to avoid the potential controversy that would come with ending the season early.

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois finally got his wish fulfilled. As of Wednesday, he is officially a member of Real Madrid who paid $45 million to Chelsea to get the deal done. As part of the transfer, Chelsea will also get Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic on a season-long loan. The deal was confirmed by both clubs on their official social media.

Courtois, who signed a six-year deal will be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday.

Thibaut Courtois was looking to make a switch to Real Madrid for some time now and has even failed to report to training on Monday in order to put pressure on Chelsea to sell him. Besides his apparent wish to play for the most accomplished soccer club in the world,

Courtois has an even more important reason for why he was forcing a move to Madrid. The 26-year-old wants to spend more time with his two kids, who live in Spain’s capital.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the four fantastic years that have passed. Chelsea FC will always have a fantastic place in my heart,” – Courtois wrote on Facebook following the move. “I want to thank the fans for their great support over the years. I hope you understand that being closer to my kids was considerable in my decision.”

Chelsea didn’t wait for too long to find a replacement for the Belgian goalkeeper. After the transfer was official, the club moved swiftly and acquired Atletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea activated Kepa’s release clause of $93 million, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper. Interesting enough, Real Madrid was previously considered one of the favorites to acquire the 23-year-old Spaniard this summer.
