The Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer is determined to play in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night despite getting a cut on his right thumb. The Rangers’ medical staff used super glue and cotton to create a protective layer around his thumb in order to allow the starting pitcher to step up to the plate.

“A little arts and crafts in the training room at times,” Scherzer jokingly said before continuing, “but that’s what you’ve got to do.” Amid conflicting opinions, Scherzer believes that his cut developed due to his hand not being as callused due to the time he took off after suffering a shoulder injury.

During mid-September, Scherzer incurred a low-grade strain of the teres muscle in his right shoulder, believed to be a result of strain due to constantly throwing at a high intensity. Still, the 39-year-old player insists that he is getting over this shoulder issue.

Texas Rangers right hander Jacob deGrom departed early from his team’s Monday night 4-0 victory against the Kansas City Royals after he suffered from right wrist soreness.

DeGrom managed to produce four hitless innings before his exit, striking out five and walking one. He threw 39 of his 58 pitches for strikes. His replacement, Dane Dunning, continued to apply the pressure to shut out the Royals’ batters.

“I felt it a little bit warming up,” deGrom said of his injury. “I thought it was going to loosen up and it actually tightened up a little bit as the game went on. We’re playing it smart. Could I have kept going? Probably. But it was lingering and it got a little bit worse as the game went on. I just want to play it safe. We’ve got a long season ahead of us.”

The Rangers confirmed that the decision to withdraw deGrom from the contest was purely precautionary, with deGrom adding that he does not feel too concerned about his wrist soreness. DeGrom signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Rangers during the offseason, thereby securing a future in Texas.

Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray had his game on Saturday night cut short when his forearm was injured during the third inning of the Rangers’ 8-2 loss to the Houston Astros.

Gray’s forearm was bruised after being hit by a line drive. According to Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, Gray was left unable to see out the remainder of the game due to the growing numbness that he experienced in his arm after being hit.

Initially, it appeared as if Gray would see out the remainder of the game as he shook his arm off after being struck. Both Bochy and the team’s trainers came to check on Gray, after which Gray wiggled his fingers and threw a few warm-up pitches. He soon halted his throws, talking to the trainer before exiting the game.

Bochy revealed that despite Gray’s inability to play the remainder of the game, the player’s subsequent X-rays were negative, leaving Bochy hopeful that the right-handed starter will be able to return to action shortly.

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager is set to miss at least four weeks after being placed on his team’s injured list due to picking up a left hamstring strain.

Seager was injured while running bases during the fifth inning of the Rangers’ game against the Kansas City Royals. Manager Chris Young confirmed that Seager underwent an MRI after the game that showed a Grade 2 strain.

“Somebody of Corey’s caliber is not replaceable, but it leads to opportunity for other players to step up. And that’s what good teams do,” Young commented after Seager was placed on the Rangers’ injured list. “All good teams, every team, goes through injuries. And we knew something like this would happen, didn’t know when or to whom.”

While Seager’s absence will be an issue for the Rangers, they remain strong contenders this season, having led the AL West with a 7-4 record before being swept 10-1 by the Royals on Wednesday night. Now, the Rangers will have to rely on either Josh Smith or utility player Ezequiel Duran to fill Seager’s role.

Nathan Eovaldi has agreed to a $34 million, two-year contract with the Texas Rangers, the team announced on Tuesday. The contract will include a third-year vesting player option.

Eovaldi also has the potential to earn bonuses of up to $3 million a year should he pitch 160 innings per season. Should he pitch 300 innings from 2023 to 2024, a $20 million option in 2025 could be triggered. Another $3 million in bonuses could accompany this option.

The 32-year-old pitcher got his start in 2011 at the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he pitched 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA. From there, he went on to play for the Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays before being traded to the Boston Red Sox. In Boston, he was famous for being part of the Red Sox World Series-winning team of 2018.

Aside from securing the free agent Eovaldi, the Rangers also signed free-agent starter Andrew Heaney on a two-year deal as well as Jacob deGrom on a five-year contract. Still, this falls below the $500 spent by the team on middle fielders Corey Seager and Marcus Semien last season.

Texas Rangers fans could soon have something to be excited about. In a recent chat with reporters, the team’s president of baseball operations, Jon Daniels, promised that the Rangers are now willing to spend more in the free agency and are even thinking of giving a longer-term deal to “the right player.”

The Rangers have been one of the worst teams in the MLB in recent years and finished at the bottom of AL West three times in the past four seasons. This apparently caused the franchise to rethink its strategy and be more open to building its roster through outside acquisitions.

“Ownership has given us a good range to work with this year with the expectation that (payroll) is going to grow over the next several years,” Daniels said via the Dallas Morning News. “We will be in a different category than we’ve been the last couple of years. The opportunity has got to line up. … We’re open to a longer-term deal on the right player.”

The Rangers are currently predicted to have around just a $50 million payroll next season, which gives the team an opportunity to chase some big names on the free-agent market. Recent reports indicated that Texas might be interested in picking up a player from the list of available All-Star shortstops that includes Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Trevor Story, and Javier Báez.

Texas Rangers finished the 2021 MLB campaign with a 60-102 record, which was third-worst in majors. They are currently on a five-season playoff drought and haven’t had a winning season since 2016.

The Texas Rangers announced over the weekend that they’ve signed Japanese pitcher Kohei Arihara. The 28-year-old player joins from NPB’s Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and has inked a two-year deal to play in the MLB.

Hokkaido made Arihara available to MLB teams last month, giving the player 30 days to get a deal done. Several teams reportedly had an interest in the right-hander, including the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox, but the Rangers ended up making the best offer.

Reportedly, Arihara will earn between $6 million and $7 million in the next two years.

“I will continue to work hard in order for me to grow and succeed in this city,” said Arihara after the deal was made official. “To lead into this, I will make sure to have a good offseason so that I can head into spring training in top condition.”

Kohei Arihara made his NPB debut in 2015 and went on to win the Pacific League Rookie of the Year award. He has a career 60–50 record with 3.74 ERA and 626 strikeouts.

Arihara was especially productive last year when he had a 15 -8 record in 24 starts while posting a 2.46 ERA and 106 strikeouts.

“The addition of Kohei Arihara strengthens the depth in our starting rotation,” said Rangers president of baseball operations Jon Daniels. “He has had success in Japan over the last six years with a breakout season in 2019.”

Arihara is expected to be the Rangers’ third pitcher in the rotation next season, with Kyle Gibson and Jordan Lyles slotted in front of him.

Texas Rangers might be without Robinson Chirinos early in the 2020 MLB season. According to manager Chris Woodward, Chirinos is questionable to play on Opening Day due to an ankle injury.

Chirinos was hurt on Monday night during an intrasquad game. Reportedly, the 36-year-old catcher was hit by outfielder Scott Heineman, who was sliding into home.

Woodward told reporters on Tuesday that Chirinos is looking better than anticipated, but that his status remains up in the air.

“Encouraging to see him walking around. Not a lot of swelling,” said Woodward. “I guess we’ll take it day by day, but there is a slight chance he may be ready for the start of the season, or maybe down for the beginning of the year. But it is encouraging. It could have been a lot worse.”

Rangers are set to open the 2020 MLB season on July 24th with a home game against Colorado Rockies.

Robinson Chirinos returned to Texas Rangers in January on a one-year deal with a team option for 2021. He spent 2019 with Houston Astros, with whom he batted .238 alongside 17 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Chirinos’ first stint with Rangers was between 2013 and 2018. He previously also played with Tampa Bay Rays.

After his contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks expired recently, veteran catcher Jeff Mathis decided not to renew it and joined Texas Rangers instead. According to The Athletic, Mathis agreed on a two-year deal with the Rangers, with the team expected to confirm the move until the end of the week.

Despite the fact that he will turn 36 in March, Jeff Mathis is still viewed as one of the top defensive catchers in the league and Rangers decided to jump on the opportunity to add him. The team found themselves without a veteran presence at catcher after declining the 2019 option on Robinson Chirinos.

Despite his premium defensive efforts, Mathis is a lousy hitter, having a career batting average of 0.198, so it is expected that he will serve in a backup role in Arlington. Rangers will either give their emerging star Isiah Kiner-Falefa more prominent role or might decide to bring in another catcher to assume the starting position.

Jeff Mathis started his professional career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005, spending seven seasons with the team. After a brief stint with Toronto Blue Jays in 2013, he went on to play for Miami Marlins and Diamondbacks.
