Freestyle skiers Alex Hall and Nick Goepper have re-established Team USA’s dominance in men’s freeski slopestyle by finishing first and second in the event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics on Wednesday. Hall took the gold thanks to a 90.01 score in the first final run, while Goepper scored 86.48 in his second run to walk away with a silver medal. Sweden’s Jesper Tjäder took home the bronze.

Team USA previously won all three medals in freeski slopestyle’s debut at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. But this was followed by an underwhelming performance four years later, with Team USA only having a silver medal to show for in Pyeongchang.

With the medal from Beijing, Goepper became the first and only Olympian to have three freeski slopestyle medals. He previously won bronze in Sochi and was responsible for the previously mentioned lone silver in 2018. On the other hand, Hall gets his first medal in his second Olympics appearance.

“I just kept it true to myself, and I think that’s the most important part about our sport is just doing it for the love and doing it how you want to do it and not changing that,” said Hall after the event.

With Hall and Goepper’s gold and silver, team USA’s medal count now stands at 19. The United States is currently ranked third among all participating countries with eight golds, seven silvers, and four bronzes.

The Golden State Warriors’ Steve Kerr will replace Gregg Popovich as the head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team. The USA Basketball’s managing director Grant Hill confirmed the news on Monday.

Kerr is well familiar with Team USA, serving as an assistant to Popovich during the Olympic gold medal run at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also represented the USA as a player, helping his country win the 1986 FIBA World Championship.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to represent our country as the head coach for the USA Basketball Men’s National Team,” Kerr said in a statement. “It’s a thrilling opportunity, and I’m excited for the challenge.”

Kerr will be tasked with continuing Team USA’s streak of consecutive Olympic gold medals, which now stands at four. He will also coach the team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where Team USA will be looking to win the competition for the first time since 2014.

Steve Kerr has been the head coach of the Warriors since 2014 and has led his team to three NBA titles. He previously also served as the general manager for the Phoenix Suns.

USA Basketball also announced Kerr’s coaching staff for the upcoming competitions. He’ll be joined by Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, Suns head coach Monty Williams, and Gonzaga University longtime coach Mark Few.

Team USA’s roster for the Tokyo Olympics is getting stronger by day. According to the Excel Basketball agency, their clients Kevin Love and Kris Middleton have committed to play for the United States at the upcoming tournament.

Love will be playing at his second Olympics, after winning the gold with Team USA in 2012, while Middleton is making his debut.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Bucks guard Jrue Holiday will also officially pledge to play in Tokyo in the following days.

With these three players on board, Team USA’s 12-man roster now only has one spot left. USA Basketball previously got commitments from center Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat), Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards), Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics), Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns), Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers), and Brooklyn Nets All-Star duo James Harden and Kevin Durant.

It’s unclear who might be the last addition, but reports say that Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George is thinking about adding his name to the list. George’s teammate Kawhi Leonard was also in the mix but will most likely withdraw his name due to health issues.

Several players already declined the invites, including the Toronto Raptors’ Kyle Lowry, Phoenix’s Chris Paul, Golden State’s Stephen Curry, and the Utah Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell.

Lowry wants to focus on his free agency, while Curry explained his rejection with offseason commitments. Mitchell wants to focus on rehabbing from a recent injury, while fatigue is cited as the reason why Paul declined.

The start of the Olympic Games in Tokyo has been officially rescheduled for July 23rd, 2021. This was announced on Monday by the Tokyo organizing committee.

Last week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to postpone the competition until next year due to ongoing coronavirus pandemic. After considering several options, including a possible spring date, the organizers opted to have the opening ceremony exactly one year after it was originally scheduled to take place.

“The schedule for the games is key to preparing for the games,” said Yoshiro Mori, the president of the Tokyo organizing committee. “This will only accelerate our progress.”

According to Mori, moving the Olympics to spring was rejected as an option due to other competitions that usually take place during that time including major soccer leagues and sports competitions in North America. The committee also wanted to give an opportunity for more athletes to qualify, as numerous qualifying events were recently canceled due to coronavirus.

IOC initially set a four-week deadline in order to make the final decision on whether to postpone the Olympics or move forward with the previously set date. Following the pressure from both countries and athletes, however, the decision was made to postpone it for 2021.
