The New Orleans Saints have finally decided on the primary role for their “Swiss Army Knife” Taysom Hill. And it won’t be the starting quarterback as the veteran might have hoped. Instead, the Saints are looking to use Hill in the tight end position in 2022.

The Saints’ new head coach Dennis Allen broke the news on Tuesday while chatting with the reporters during the NFL annual meetings.

“I think the role for Taysom really is going to be a lot more of the kind of F tight end, ‘move’ tight end type of role. I think that’s the direction that we need to move with him because I think he can be one of the better players in the league in that role,” Allen explained.

Since coming to New Orleans in 2017, Hill has been used in several offensive roles, including QB, TE, wide receiver, running back, and full back, while also playing on special teams. This made him one of the most unique players in the NFL and a secret weapon for the Saints. However, the 31-year-old player repeatedly insisted that his goal was to play the quarterback position full-time.

The New Orleans Saints gave Hill the opportunity to play under center last season, but he struggled to prove he deserves an extended look as a signal-caller. He only completed 58.2% of his passes while throwing for 978 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Moving forward, the Saints are expected to have Jameis Winston as their no. 1 QB. Winston, who had seven starts for the franchise in 2021, signed a two-year, $28 million contract in March. He will most likely be backed up by veteran Andy Dalton, who recently joined as a free-agent signing.

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a contract extension with their versatile player Taysom Hill. And just like Hill, the contract is one of the most unique in the whole NFL.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the basis of the agreement is set at four years and $40 million. But this is only if the Saints continue to use Hill as their “Swiss Army knife.” This includes playing on special teams and serving as a wideout, running back, tight end, and providing options at the quarterback position.

However, in case that Hill reaches his ultimate goal and becomes New Orleans’ starting quarterback in the future, his contract will increase in value. In that case, the extension could be worth as much as $95 million, according to Schefter.

Since joining the New Orleans Saints in 2017, Taysom Hill has emerged as a unique offensive weapon for the team. As a rusher, he totaled 913 running yards and 14 touchdowns while also totaling 34 receptions for 388 yards and seven scores as a receiver. On top of that, Hill often lined up under center, throwing 101 completions for 1,103 yards, four TDs, and four interceptions.

After Drew Brees retired following the 2020 NFL season, Saints head coach Sean Payton promised Hill a shot to become the team’s starting quarterback. He went against Jameis Winston in training camp but ended up losing the competition and settling for a backup option at the position.

It remains to be seen whether the Saints truly believe that Hill can be a starting quarterback for them at one point. He was set to get a shot after Winston went down with a season-ending injury earlier in 2021, but a concussion prevented him from making the most of it.

When New Orleans Saints lost starting quarterback Drew Brees to ribs and lung injuries earlier this week, it was expected that backup Jameis Winston would take his place under center for the upcoming game against Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. But according to recent reports, this won’t be the case.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday that Saints decided to turn to versatile Taysom Hill as their QB and have given him all practice reps with the starting lineup throughout the week.

Brees started last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers but didn’t return for the second halftime. Winston stepped up in his place, attempting 10 passes in the remaining two quarters and completing six for 63 yards. This was only the 26-year-old’s second feature this season, after taking 10 snaps in Week 9.

It looks like the Saints’ coaching staff wasn’t satisfied with what they’ve seen from Winston and will now roll the dice with Hill.

The start against Atlanta will be Taysom Hill’s first in the NFL. While nominally a quarterback, Hill has been mostly used as a utility player by Saints so far in his career and has taken the field as a running back, wide receiver, tight end, and quarterback, among other positions.

In 2020, Hill made the most impact as a rusher, running for 186 yards and a touchdown in 34 carries. He also caught six passes for 64 yards and a score.

When it comes to his performance at the quarterback position, Hill has attempted five passes this season, completing four of them for 86 yards. Since coming to the NFL, he has 10 completions out of 18 attempts and has thrown for 205 yards and an interception.
