The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a contract extension with their versatile player Taysom Hill. And just like Hill, the contract is one of the most unique in the whole NFL.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the basis of the agreement is set at four years and $40 million. But this is only if the Saints continue to use Hill as their “Swiss Army knife.” This includes playing on special teams and serving as a wideout, running back, tight end, and providing options at the quarterback position.

However, in case that Hill reaches his ultimate goal and becomes New Orleans’ starting quarterback in the future, his contract will increase in value. In that case, the extension could be worth as much as $95 million, according to Schefter.

Since joining the New Orleans Saints in 2017, Taysom Hill has emerged as a unique offensive weapon for the team. As a rusher, he totaled 913 running yards and 14 touchdowns while also totaling 34 receptions for 388 yards and seven scores as a receiver. On top of that, Hill often lined up under center, throwing 101 completions for 1,103 yards, four TDs, and four interceptions.

After Drew Brees retired following the 2020 NFL season, Saints head coach Sean Payton promised Hill a shot to become the team’s starting quarterback. He went against Jameis Winston in training camp but ended up losing the competition and settling for a backup option at the position.

It remains to be seen whether the Saints truly believe that Hill can be a starting quarterback for them at one point. He was set to get a shot after Winston went down with a season-ending injury earlier in 2021, but a concussion prevented him from making the most of it.

When New Orleans Saints lost starting quarterback Drew Brees to ribs and lung injuries earlier this week, it was expected that backup Jameis Winston would take his place under center for the upcoming game against Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. But according to recent reports, this won’t be the case.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday that Saints decided to turn to versatile Taysom Hill as their QB and have given him all practice reps with the starting lineup throughout the week.

Brees started last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers but didn’t return for the second halftime. Winston stepped up in his place, attempting 10 passes in the remaining two quarters and completing six for 63 yards. This was only the 26-year-old’s second feature this season, after taking 10 snaps in Week 9.

It looks like the Saints’ coaching staff wasn’t satisfied with what they’ve seen from Winston and will now roll the dice with Hill.

The start against Atlanta will be Taysom Hill’s first in the NFL. While nominally a quarterback, Hill has been mostly used as a utility player by Saints so far in his career and has taken the field as a running back, wide receiver, tight end, and quarterback, among other positions.

In 2020, Hill made the most impact as a rusher, running for 186 yards and a touchdown in 34 carries. He also caught six passes for 64 yards and a score.

When it comes to his performance at the quarterback position, Hill has attempted five passes this season, completing four of them for 86 yards. Since coming to the NFL, he has 10 completions out of 18 attempts and has thrown for 205 yards and an interception.

The New Orleans Saints re-signed backup quarterback Taysom Hill to a two-year contract over the weekend, allowing the signal caller to continue learning behind starter Drew Brees.

Hill, who has spent the entirety of his NFL career with the Saints after being signed out of BYU in 2017, has agreed to a contract that contains $16 million in guaranteed money and could reach a total of $21 depending on performance incentives.

While Hill spent last season as the team’s third-string quarterback, he has a unique role with the Saints that sees him used in other facets during the team’s games. For instance, Hill has been used as a kick returner, a receiver, and a “gunner” on punt plays, which has given him the nickname of the “Human Swiss Army Knife” due to his versatility.

Hill is expected to continue in a similar role with New Orleans this season, serving as the third-string quarterback behind Brees and a yet-unknown backup QB. There are currently rumors that the franchise is making an effort to sign free agent quarterback Jameis Winston to back up Brees.

The Idaho native’s reasons for staying in New Orleans were clear. He said, “I’ve felt a lot of love from the organization and the fan base. My wife and I always wanted to stay in New Orleans, so this worked out perfect.”

Hill will break camp with the team later this summer.

New Orleans Saints’ Taysom Hill is one of the most versatile football players in today’s game. Saints’ coach Sean Payton used him as a tight end, wide receiver, quarterback, and Hill responded successfully on each task.

However, it looks like Hill, who is a restricted free agent this summer, isn’t interested in staying the “Swiss army knife” for his entire career. Instead, the 29-year-old sees himself taking the position under center full time.

“I definitely view myself as a franchise quarterback,” Hill told Associated Press’ Rob Maaddi. “I think as you look at the other questions: Is it New Orleans? Is it somewhere else? As you go into free agency, this is the time that you start to find out how people view you. We haven’t gotten into free agency long enough to really know how these guys view me and we’ll just handle it as it comes.”

Hill is determined to achieve his goal even if this means he will have to leave New Orleans to get there.

“I want to play quarterback in this league, and if New Orleans don’t view me that way, well then I have to leave. That’s really where we’re at,” he added.

Saints have had one of the best QB situations in the league last year, but now they have some tough decisions to make. Their starter Drew Brees is still undecided on whether he will return in 2020 or retire, while Brees’ backup Teddy Bridgewater will certainly draw some interest on the free-agent market after winning all five games he started in 2019.

Taysom Hill, on the other hand, will also be a highly sought after player among QB needy teams. However, it remains to be seen whether a team would gamble on Hill to be a full-time starter at QB, which will probably be his first request before inking a deal.

Hill finished the past regular season with 55 passing yards, two receptions for 25 yards, and 50 rushing yard. In the postseason, he had a TD catch while also throwing for 50 yards.
