Baltimore Ravens got some badly needed salary cap relief, courtesy of cornerback Tavon Young.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Young agreed to restructure his contract and will take a $2.85 million pay cut in 2021. The reworked deal also turns $2.51 million of the 26-year-old player’s salary for 2020 into a signing bonus.

The move works for both sides given the circumstances.

For Ravens, the deal gives them more breathing room as they previously only had $1.5 million in cap space to work with. Young, on the other hand, got some insurance that he’ll remain in Baltimore next season, considering his 2021 salary was non-guaranteed.

Tavon Young had an eye-catching campaign in 2018 when he scored two defensive touchdowns while also contributing with one interception, 2.0 sacks, five passes defended, and 37 tackles. This prompted the Ravens to give him a $25.8 million, three-year extension that made him the highest-paid nickel corner in the NFL.

But Young wasn’t able to replicate his success moving forward as injuries kept him sidelined for the better part of the past two years. He first missed the entire 2019 NFL season due to a neck injury suffered in practice, and he’ll also sit out the better part of 2020 after tearing his ACL in Week 2 against Houston Texans.

Baltimore Ravens’ are set to receive an upgrade to their already solid secondary this season. According to Ravens’ defensive coordinator Don Martindale, corner Tavon Young, who missed 2019 entirely due to injury, is healthy again and “ready to go.”

Ravens made Young the highest-paid nickel-back in the league last year, giving him a three-year, $25.8 million contract extension. He never got the chance to justify this deal, however, as he severely injured his neck during a preseason practice.

But Baltimore should see the return of its investment in 2020.

“He looks healthy on the computer,” said Martindale via Ravens’ official website. “He says he’s healthy. He’s ready to go. Tavon is ready to go, and if he tells me he’s ready to go, I believe in him 100 percent. And he’ll be ready to go, so I’m excited about that.”

Tavon Young struggled to remain healthy as a pro, having also missed 2017 with an ACL injury. When he was healthy, however, Young showed flashes of playmaking ability and ability to be a difference changer on defense.

Since entering the league in 2016 as a fourth-round pick, Young notched 90 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 13 pass deflections, three interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns.
