Steven Matz’s decision to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals in the free agency earlier this week didn’t sit well with New York Mets owner Steve Cohen. In a tweet posted on Wednesday, Cohen said he’s not happy with the outcome while calling out Matz’s agent Rob Martin for “unprofessional behavior.”

Matz spent the first six years of his MLB career with the Mets before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of the 2021 season. The 30-year-old ended up putting together a great season, going 14–7 in 29 starts with 3.82 ERA and 144 strikeouts.

The Mets showed interest in reuniting with Matz after he became a free agent this offseason and believed the feeling was mutual. However, Matz went on to snub the franchise and opted for a four-year, $44 million deal from the Cardinals instead.

Cohen now believes that Martin misled the Mets about his client’s intentions and didn’t hesitate to make his feelings public.

“I’m not happy this morning,” Cohen wrote on Twitter. “I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent. I guess words and promises don’t matter.”

Martin, on the other hand, responded with a statement in which he said he’ll “take the high road” while adding that Matz “made the decision he felt was best for him and his family.”

During his time in New York, Steven Matz made 107 starts and had a 31-41 record. He posted 4.35 ERA and had 552 strikeouts in Mets’ jersey as well.
