The Golden State Warriors made sure their championship-winning head coach, Steve Kerr, stays with the franchise for at least a couple of more seasons. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Kerr and the Warriors agreed to a two-year, $35 million extension.

Kerr, who was set to be out of contract at the end of the 2023-24 NBA season, has now become the highest-paid head coach in the history of the NBA. His $17.5 million average salary for the next two seasons eclipses Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra, who earns $15 million annually after signing an eight-year, $120 million extension earlier this year.

It is believed that San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich earns more than Kerr and Spoelstra, but he also holds a President of Basketball Operations title on top of his head coaching job.

Steve Kerr has been serving as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors since 2014. Under his tenure, the Warriors became a dynasty, winning four NBA titles and making six NBA Finals. He compiled a .655 win percentage in the regular season, which is fifth best in NBA history.

By locking Kerr to an extension, the Warriors ensure coaching continuity during what could be a challenging period for the franchise. While their championship-winning core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green approaches the twilight of their NBA careers, Golden State is trying to set up a succession plan by giving their younger players more opportunities and preparing them to take over down the stretch.

The Warriors struggled so far in 2023-24 and currently find themselves at No. 10 in the Western Conference with a 29-26 record. However, the encouraging thing for the team is that they have won eight out of their last 10 games.

The Golden State Warriors’ Steve Kerr will replace Gregg Popovich as the head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team. The USA Basketball’s managing director Grant Hill confirmed the news on Monday.

Kerr is well familiar with Team USA, serving as an assistant to Popovich during the Olympic gold medal run at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also represented the USA as a player, helping his country win the 1986 FIBA World Championship.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to represent our country as the head coach for the USA Basketball Men’s National Team,” Kerr said in a statement. “It’s a thrilling opportunity, and I’m excited for the challenge.”

Kerr will be tasked with continuing Team USA’s streak of consecutive Olympic gold medals, which now stands at four. He will also coach the team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where Team USA will be looking to win the competition for the first time since 2014.

Steve Kerr has been the head coach of the Warriors since 2014 and has led his team to three NBA titles. He previously also served as the general manager for the Phoenix Suns.

USA Basketball also announced Kerr’s coaching staff for the upcoming competitions. He’ll be joined by Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, Suns head coach Monty Williams, and Gonzaga University longtime coach Mark Few.

Golden State Warriors’ star Draymond Green will probably want to forget the 2019/20 NBA season as soon as possible. Not only his team finished with the worst record in the league, but Green also struggled individually and had one of his least productive performances since entering the league.

And while most coaches would be worried to see this from one of their main players, Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr doesn’t seem to lose sleep over it. According to Kerr, who recently made an appearance on KNBR’s Tolbert, Kreuger, and Brooks podcast, Green was just a victim of a bad situation.

“I think this year was really frustrating for him offensively, and then as a competitor, it was frustrating for him just losing night after night. It’s just too difficult in this league to try to win games when you’re that shorthanded. I think he dealt with the frustration,” said Kerr, alluding to the fact that Warriors played without All-Stars Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry for most of the 2019/20.

Without Thompson and Curry on the court, Green had his statistically worst season since his sophomore year in the NBA, averaging 8.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game this season. He also shot abysmal 38.9 percent from the field and 27.9 percent from the three-point arc.

But Kerr believes that these performances were an outlier and that Green will return to his “very best version” next season.

“He made it through, and he is getting a much-needed rest,” he added. “And I think we’re going to see the very best version of Draymond next year, whenever next season starts. I feel really good about where he’s going to be mentally and physically.”

Team USA head coach Gregg Popovich is putting the final touches on the rest of his coaching staff and has decided to name Golden State Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr as his assistant on the team. This won’t be the first time they work together since Kerr played under Popovich in 2002–2003 NBA season at San Antonio Spurs.

USA Basketball confirmed the decision on Thursday revealing that Indiana Pacers head coach Nate McMillan and Villanova Wildcats head coach Jay Wright will also join in as assistants for 2019 World Cup in China and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

It is believed that Steve Kerr is one of the frontrunners to take the head coaching job at Team USA after Gregg Popovich and that his time as an assistant will prepare him for the challenges of coaching on an international level. Kerr was part of the Team USA while he was playing at the University of Arizona, participating in 1986 FIBA World Championship and winning a gold medal.

This is an incredible opportunity and one I’m extremely grateful for,” – said Kerr in a statement. “I had the good fortune to participate in our USA Basketball program as an amateur, and to have the chance to return to the world stage three decades later and work under Pop, one of my former coaches and a mentor, is a tremendous honor.

Nate McMillan has a longtime history of working with USA Basketball, having been an assistant under coach Mike Krzyzewski from 2006 to 2012. Jay Wright, on the other side, previously served as a head coach of Team USA at 2005 World University Games and 2007 Pan Am Games.
