The New York Giants can’t stop losing key pieces of their offense due to injuries.

Days after star running back Saquon Barkley was placed on IR with a torn ACL that will keep him out for the rest of the season, the Giants lead wide receiver Sterling Shepard also lands on IR.

Thankfully for the Giants, Shepard’s injury is not as serious and shouldn’t keep him off the field for more than three weeks. Shepard reportedly has turf toe, an injury he suffered in the second half of last week’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Regardless, second-year quarterback Daniel Jones will now be playing without his two most reliable players on offense at least until mid-October, when Shepard is expected to come back.

Shepard, who is 27, had eight receptions for 76 yards in the first six quarters of this season in which the Giants offense has struggled to get anything going against two stout defensive fronts, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Bears, respectively.

They play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, a team that has been hit even worse by injuries. San Francisco’s starting quarterback Jimmy Goroppolo will not play on Sunday and their best defender, Nick Bosa, is out for the year with an ACL tear.

New York Giants are not keen on letting their wide receiver Sterling Shepard experience free agency anytime soon. Instead, the team decided to give Shepard a four-year extension worth $41 million according to NFL Network.  The 25-year- old is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

ESPN‘s Adam Schefter reports that Shepard’s deal includes $21.3 million in guaranteed money and will make him one of the league’s best-paid slot receivers.

Sterling Shepard had a career season in 2018, finishing the year with 66 receptions for 872 yards and four touchdowns and trailing only Odell Beckham Jr. among Giants players in receiving yard. Since Beckham was traded to Cleveland Browns in March, Shepard is now expected to become the team’s leading wideout and develop into a star caliber player. He will be paired with former Philadelphia Eagles’ WR Golden Tate, who was signed in the free agency.

Shepard was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. During his time in the NFL, he caught 190 passes for 2,286 yards and 14 touchdowns.
