The Cleveland Guardians announced on Monday that they are hiring former All-Star catcher Stephen Vogt to be their new manager. Vogt will replace Guardians’ longtime manager Terry Francona, who stepped down from his position at the end of the 2023 campaign.

Vogt has reportedly signed a three-year deal with Cleveland. It will be his first managerial job at any level.

The Guardians interviewed several candidates for their managerial vacancy in recent weeks, including ex-Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell and New York Yankees’ bench coach Carlos Mendoza. However, Vogt made a strong impression during the process despite his lack of experience and ended up landing the job.

“Stephen has thought critically about the type of leader and manager he wants to be,” said Chris Antonetti, the Guardians’ president of baseball operations, in a statement. “His deep care for others, his ability to build meaningful relationships with those around him, and his open-mindedness and curiosity make him an ideal fit to lead our club moving forward. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Stephen.”

Stephen Vogt played 10 years in the MLB for seven different franchises, including the Oakland Athletics and the Arizona Diamondbacks, before retiring after the 2022 season. He immediately transitioned to coaching, serving as bullpen and quality control coach for the Seattle Mariners in 2023.

Former Major League catcher Stephen Vogt has been named as a serious contender for the Cleveland Guardians’ vacant managerial position, sources revealed on Tuesday. This comes a little over a year since he retired from his playing career.

Currently a coach with the Seattle Mariners, Vogt interviewed for the role of manager of the San Francisco Giants. It appears, however, that San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin is in pole position for the role. Melvin was previously granted permission to enter talks with the Giants.

Vogt is now expected to have in-person talks with the Guardians this week, sources have revealed. He is competing against the likes of Giants bullpen coach Craig Albernaz, Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough, and New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza.

The Arizona Diamondbacks made their first significant move of the offseason on Tuesday, signing free-agent catcher Stephen Vogt to a one-year contract that includes a vesting option for the 2021 season.

Vogt, who turned 35-years-old earlier this month, is an MLB veteran with ample experience behind the dish for various teams in the league. The California native began his career with the Tampa Bay Rays before spending several seasons with the Oakland Athletics, then passing through the Brewers and Giants organizations.

He spent last season with San Francisco in a part-time role. He caught 99 games for the team, posting solid offensive numbers. His .263 batting average, .314 on-base percentage, and 10 home runs made him an above-average offensive contributor at the position.

Vogt underwent shoulder surgery two years ago which caused him to miss the 2018 season. After undergoing the surgery, he found his ability to catch runners stealing diminished. This was one concern that teams faced when considering whether or not to sign him this offseason.

In any case, Vogt is expected to serve as at least a part-time starter for the Giants in the 2020 season. Financial terms and specifics of his contract were not immediately made public.
