Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has officially retired from MLB. The move comes after several months of uncertainty about Strasburg’s future in the league.

Strasburg, who has dealt with a number of injuries in recent years, made his retirement decision back in August. However, he never made it official and his retirement press conference was canceled at the last moment. It turned out that there was a dispute with the Nationals about the remainder of the seven-year, $245 million contract he signed with the franchise ahead of the 2020 NFL season.

The two sides engaged in lengthy settlement negotiations before finally reaching an agreement this week. The expectation is that Strasburg will receive most, if not all, of the money he is owed, but a portion of it will be deferred.

Stephen Strasburg had a career season in 2019 when he helped the Nationals win their first World Series title and received World Series MVP honors. He became a free agent in the following offseason and unsurprisingly landed a lucrative new deal with the franchise.

The Nationals hoped that Strasburg would continue being a mainstay in their rotation for years to come, but that never materialized. A combination of injuries limited Strasburg to just eight starts since then and he made his most recent MLB appearance back in June 2022.

Strasburg will end his career with a 113–62 record, 3.24 ERA, and 1,723 strikeouts.

Washington Nationals’ veteran pitcher Stephen Strasburg is reportedly retiring from professional baseball. According to The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty and Barry Svrluga, Strasburg will officially announce his decision in early September.

Sources close to the situation say that Strasburg’s decision has been prompted by recent injuries that kept him off the mound since June 2022. He made one start last season, giving up seven earned runs in 4 1⁄3 innings, and spent the rest of the campaign on the injured list.

Stephen Strasburg will be best remembered by baseball fans for his role in the Nationals’ World Series-winning run in 2019. He went 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA and 47 strikeouts and won both of his starts in the World Series against the Houston Astros to be named World Series MVP.

After the impressive run in 2019, Strasburg opted out of his contract and signed a new seven-year, $245 million deal with the Nationals. However, he only started eight games since then, dealing with a series of injuries, including a nerve issue in his pitching hand and shoulder injury that required surgery.

Strasburg will retire with a 113–62 record, 3.24 career ERA, and 1,723 strikeouts. He has three All-Star nods on his resume.

The Washington Nationals announced on Saturday that star starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg had been scratched from his start against the Yankees due to a nerve issue in his right hand.

Strasburg, who was named the World Series MVP in the Nationals’ 2019 playoff triumph, went on to miss his first start of the 2020 season thanks to the problem with his pitching hand.

Erick Fedde made the start in place of Strasburg, going 4.0 innings and giving up two runs in the Nats’ win over New York.

The Nationals’ concern now turns to their big right-hander, who is expected to anchor the team’s rotation as they look to defend their 2019 World Series title. He received an injection in his hand in order to try to clear up the problem.

It still remains to be seen, however, how long he may miss due to the nerve issue and if he will be forced to hit the injured list. Strasburg posted an 18-6 record with a 3.32 ERA last season, and any time that he might miss would be a tough blow to the Nats.

There is still no news as to when Strasburg will be ready to take the mound again, but Nats fans hope that it will come as soon as possible.

After choosing to opt out of his contract with the team earlier this offseason, Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals agreed to a new contract on Monday.

The team came to an agreement with Strasburg that gives him an additional 7 years of contract with the team that is reportedly worth around $245 million, the most expensive contract ever given to a pitcher.

Strasburg is a star in the world of baseball, having led the Nationals to a 2019 World Series Championship. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the series after a fantastic performance that saw him win his two starts, striking out 14 and allowing 4 earned runs in 14.1 innings.

The former #1 overall pick has had a highly successful career, living up to the expectations that were deposited on him. The 10-year veteran owns a career record of 112-58 with a stellar ERA of 3.17.

The California native has been named an All-Star three times since making his Major League debut in 2010. The 2019 season was possibly his best year, as he led the National League in wins with 18 and finished the season with a 3.32 ERA in a brutal year for pitchers.

Strasburg will report to Washington’s Spring Training facility in February to begin the preparation for the 2020 season.

After the Washington Nationals’ shocking run to the World Series crown in the 2019 MLB season, it’s now time to look ahead to the offseason and free agency.

There’s a large crop of tantalizing free agents on the market heading into the 2020 season. The choice that these players make as to where to play in the upcoming seasons will likely make a huge impact on the league.

Here are our picks for the top four free agents this MLB offseason and for where they will end up signing a contract.

1. Anthony Rendon

Rendon has been a monster for the Nationals over the past several seasons. The third baseman won a Silver Slugger Award and placed third in NL MVP voting after an elite season in which he batted .319/.412/.598 with 34 home runs and 126 RBI.

The Texas native won’t turn 30 until next June, but he has hinted in past interviews that he might call it a career after only a few more seasons. We think Rendon will take a big-money deal for four or five seasons to join the Dodgers.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers

2. Gerrit Cole

Cole had the best season of his career in 2019, finishing just behind Astros teammate Justin Verlander for the AL Cy Young Award. The consistent, durable righty starter won 20 games for Houston and posted a 2.50 ERA, racking up a mind-boggling total of 326 strikeouts to lead the league.

The 29-year-old, as fate has it, is an Orange County native and a UCLA alum. With the Los Angeles Angels desperate to add a front-line starter and with deep pockets waiting to make their move, we expect Cole to sign a deal to return home.

Prediction: Los Angeles Angels

3. Stephen Strasburg

Strasburg, the reigning World Series MVP, opted out of the second half of his contract with the Nationals to test the free agent waters after a successful year on the mound and an even better postseason.

He won’t be cheap for the Nationals retain, as his consistent front-line results in previous seasons have driven up his market value. However, Strasburg has always been comfortable in Washington and we expect the team to commit to him financially in order to keep him in their rotation.

Prediction: Washington Nationals

4. Madison Bumgarner

Yet another pitcher comes in at number four on the list. Bumgarner, the veteran lefty who has spent the entirety of his career with the San Francisco Giants, is a free agent for the first time and is looking to earn one final big payday.

A North Carolina native, Bumgarner seems like an ideal candidate to sign a deal with the Braves, who are looking for a top starter to add to their young and talented rotation that wasn’t good enough to advance out of the Division Series in this year’s playoffs.

Prediction: Atlanta Braves

The Washington Nationals won the first World Series in franchise history on Wednesday night after orchestrating a comeback win to beat the Houston Astros in Game 7.

After trailing 2-0 heading into the seventh inning, Washington’s bats woke up and came through in the clutch to deliver the city its first baseball championship since 1923.

Anthony Rendon hit a solo home run off of Astros starter Zack Greinke to cut Houston’s lead to 2-1 in the top of the seventh.

After Greinke exited with a runner on base, reliever Will Harris gave up a two-run home run to Nats DH Howie Kendrick that gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

They added one more run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to secure a win that the city of Washington won’t soon forget.

After starter Max Scherzer departed after five shaky innings, Patrick Corbin threw three innings of scoreless relief before Daniel Hudson entered to close out the game and send the Nationals into pandemonium.

After the conclusion of the game, starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg was named series MVP after winning his two starts, throwing 14.1 innings and allowing only 4 runs while striking out 14 batters.

The Nationals were never expected to go this far after making the playoffs as a Wild Card team, but they peaked at just the right time to bring the Commissioner’s Trophy home.
