After spending all of his 13 years in MLB with the San Francisco Giants, All-Star shortstop Brandon Crawford is moving on. Crawford joined the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent, signing a one-year deal.

The Cardinals officially confirmed the news on Tuesday through their social media channels. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Crawford had a down year in 2023, which probably affected his market and left him unsigned deep into the free agency. He played 93 games while dealing with a number of injuries, batting a career-low .194 with seven home runs and 38 RBIs.

The Cardinals were in need of a shortstop depth due to uncertainty surrounding the availability of Tommy Edman, who is currently recovering from a wrist injury. Rookie Masyn Winn is expected to receive a nod at the SS in Edman’s absence, but his lack of experience and up-and-down performances last season didn’t instill much confidence, which is why the team went for Crawford as insurance.

During his time with the Giants, Brandon Crawford helped the franchise win two World Series. He has three All-Star nods on his resume while winning the Golden Glove Award four times and the Silver Slugger Award in 2015. He has a career batting average of .250, alongside 1,392 hits, 146 homers, and 744 RBIs.

The Boston Red Sox are having quite a busy week on the trade market. After sending outfielder Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees and acquiring right-hand pitcher Justin Slaten from the New York Mets, the Red Sox have now also landed outfielder Tyler O’Neill in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.

According to the Red Sox’s announcement on Friday, they are sending RHP Nick Robertson and minor league pitcher Victor Santos to St. Louis in exchange for O’Neill.

O’Neill has two Golden Glove Awards on his resume and has been, at times, a valuable player for the Cardinals. In 2021, he batted .286 with 34 home runs and 80 RBIs while receiving NL Most Valuable Player votes. However, injuries limited his impact in the past couple of seasons while he also had public disagreements with Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol.

The Red Sox are most likely hoping that O’Neill can re-discover his old form next season when he’ll be healthy and that they can get one good year out of him before he reaches free agency. The 28-year-old player has one year of arbitration left on his deal that will likely pay him around $5 million.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, shore up their pitching staff with Robertson and Santos. Robertson made his debut in MLB this past season, playing 18 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Red Sox, while Santos is recovering from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the 2023 campaign.

Retired catcher Yadier Molina is returning to the St. Louis Cardinals. According to the announcement made by the Cardinals on Wednesday, Molina will take on the front office role with the franchise, serving as a special assistant to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.

Yadier Molina retired at the end of the 2022 MLB season. He spent all of his 19 years in the majors with the Cardinals.

Following his retirement from MLB, Molina served as a manager for his native Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He also had a brief managerial stint with the Navegantes del Magallanes in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

“We are excited to welcome Yadi back to the St. Louis Cardinals,” Mozeliak said in a team-released statement. “He will provide invaluable help at the major league level, as well as spend time with our minor league teams in his new role with the team.”

Yadier Molina was drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He earned his MLB debut in 2003, launching what turned out to be a Hall of Fame-worthy career. Molina earned 10 All-Star nods and won nine Gold Glove Awards over the course of his time in the majors. He also helped the Cardinals win two World Series.

The St. Louis Cardinals made a big splash on Monday in a move that will give a much-needed boost to their rotation. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Cardinals locked All-Star pitcher Sonny Gray to a three-year deal.

Reportedly, Gray received an average annual salary of $25 million, which brings the total value of the deal to $75 million.

Gray had a strong 2023 campaign, making 32 starts with the Minnesota Twins. He went 8-8, posting a 2.79 ERA with 183 strikeouts. The 34-year-old player also allowed only eight home runs, earning his third career All-Star nod and finishing second in American League Cy Young Award voting.

The Cardinals entered the offseason with only two starting pitchers on their books: Miles Mikolas and Steven Matz. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak tackled the issue by adding Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson on short-term deals last week and now beating several teams to land Gray. The moves give them one of the more experienced rotations in the league and provide hope they can improve on the disappointing 71-91 finish in 2023.

Sonny Gray will be playing his 12th season in the majors in 2024. He started his career in 2013 with the Oakland Athletics, where he spent five years before embarking on stints with the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and the Twins. He has a career record of 98–85 with a 3.47 ERA and 1,521 strikeouts.

Nolan Arenado has been a rare bright spot for the St. Louis Cardinals in an otherwise disappointing 2023 season. Still, many believe that the Cardinals would entertain trade offers for Arenado ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and it seems that the All-Star third baseman wouldn’t be too surprised by such a development.

Speaking with the reporters during the 2023 All-Star event in Seattle, Arenado was asked about the possibility of being traded by the Cardinals this season.

“It is a business, right?” Arenado responded.

The 32-year-old player added that dealing with trade rumors is nothing new to him.

“I’ve been traded once,” Arenado explained. “I think that shocked a lot of people at that time. I guess it doesn’t surprise me anywhere what happens in this game. It would still be surprising seeing some things happen. But I understand there are certain things that probably should.”

Arenado joined the Cardinals in a trade from the Colorado Rockies in 2021. He has since performed on an All-Star level, including a great individual campaign in 2023 that sees him batting .283 with 19 homers and 62 RBIs.

But despite Arenado’s stellar performances, the Cardinals currently find themselves at the bottom of NHL Central with a 38-52 record. Many expect them to be sellers at the trade deadline, moving from some veteran players in attempts to retool their roster for next season.

The St. Louis Cardinals have decided to shake things up after losing eight out of the last 10 games. The team decided to move their All-Star catcher Wilson Contreras to a designated hitter role and have Andrew Knizner serve as their primary backstop.

The decision comes as a surprise, considering that the Cardinals made a big investment in Contreras to play the catcher position. Contreras signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract in the offseason, but it doesn’t look like money well spent for the organization, at least not for now.

According to reports, the Cardinals hope the switch from Contreras to Knizner might improve the team’s underperforming rotation and also deal with struggles behind the plate. It is unclear if the change is a short-term fix or part of the team’s long-term plans.

Initially, the Cardinals wanted Contreras to serve as DH and play in the outfield. However, those plans recently changed after conversations with the player, according to the team’s president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak.

“We won’t have him in the outfield,” Mozeliak told The Athletic. “I know that came out yesterday, but after talking with him, it’s basically going to be more in the DH role right now. And there’s light at the end of the tunnel to get back behind the plate.”

Contreras himself isn’t happy about losing his job but said that he respects the team’s decision.

“It’s tough, but I’m an employee,” said Contreras after learning about the switch. “I know my primary position is catching, but if they want me to DH more, I can do nothing about it except by being the best hitter I can be.”

The 2023 MLB season hasn’t officially started, but the St. Louis Cardinals’ veteran pitcher Miles Mikolas can already consider it a success. On Friday, the Cardinals announced that Mikolas would get the nod as the team’s Opening Day starter while also giving the two-time All-Star a new extension.

Reportedly, the extension is for two years and comes with $40 million in new money for Mikolas. He is now under contract with the Cardinals for the next three years and will earn a total of $55.75 million during that time.

“Miles stands among the top pitchers in the game today and has continued to provide a steady presence for us both in the rotation and inside the clubhouse,” said Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak in a statement.

Mikolas had a stellar season in 2022, posting a 12-13 record with a 3.29 ERA in 33 games. He also had career-high 153 strikeouts while earning his second All-Star nod.

Before joining the Cardinals ahead of the 2018 season, Mikolas played with the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers. He also had a brief stint with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).

“It really is the perfect situation that I found here,” Mikolas explained said after signing a deal that will keep him in St. Louis until 2025.

All-Star catcher Willson Contreras saw a lot of success during his seven seasons with the Chicago Cubs. But despite this, the veteran believes that his new team, the St. Louis Cardinals, are “a better organization.”

Contreras left the Cubs this offseason to sign a five-year, $87.5 million contract with the Cardinals. And while he is yet to play an official game for the franchise, he is already happy with his choice.

“For me, I like this better. It’s a better organization. Old school way, which I love it,” Contreras told Bally Sports Midwest when asked about the differences between the Cardinals and the Cubs. “Ever since I got here it’s been everything just one way. The Cardinal way.”

Willson Contreras joined the Cubs organization in 2009 as a teenager from Venezuela. He made his way through the team’s farm system to get his MLB debut in 2016 and went on to become one of the franchise’s most important players. During his time in Chicago, he made three All-Star appearances and was part of the Cubs’ team that won the World Series in 2016.

Despite this, the Cubs reportedly explored ways to trade Contreras in recent seasons as part of their rebuild. This obviously rubbed Contreras the wrong way, as well as the fact that Chicago didn’t make a significant effort to keep him once he hit the free agency.

The St. Louis Cardinals have found Mike Shildt’s successor in-house, hiring bench coach Oliver Marmol to be the team’s new manager. Marmol immediately becomes the youngest manager in MLB and youngest in franchise history since 1951 and Marty Marion.

The Cardinals made the announcement during a press conference before confirming the news on social media.

Speaking with reporters, the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said that the team hired Marmol because they believe he is the best man to continue their project.

“Ultimately, our comfort level of keeping that continuity and really building on what we have going … we felt like we’re in a really good place directionally with where we were headed. We felt Oli could really be that seamless transition to where we’re trying to get,” Mozeliak added.

Oliver Marmol was drafted by the Cardinals back in the 2007 MLB Draft and had a brief playing career in the minors before turning to coaching. He served at several positions in the minors, including managing the Cardinals’ Low-A affiliate Palm Beach Cardinals, before being promoted to first base coach in 2017. Marmol became the bench coach for the MLB side ahead of the 2019 season.

The Cardinals moved on from Shildt shortly after they ended their 2021 playoff run with an NL wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mozeliak said at the time that the two sides parted ways due to “philosophical differences.”

The good news keeps on coming for the St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright. Just one day after he was named the starter for the Cardinals’ upcoming NL wild-card game, Wainwright also received a new deal that will keep him with the franchise for at least one more season.

The team officially announced on Friday that Wainwright inked a one-year extension after previously playing on an expiring contract. The financial details of the agreement are still being kept under wraps.

Wainwright, who turned 40 in August, has made 32 starts for the Cardinals in 2021. He boasts a 17-7 record while posting 3.05 ERA and managing 174 strikeouts.

“I don’t want to be anywhere else,” Wainwright said after the news became official. “Who am I kidding?”

Adam Wainwright was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of 2000’s amateur draft. While in the minors, Wainwright established himself as one of Atlanta’s most promising prospects but never made an MLB appearance for the franchise as he was traded to the Cardinals in 2003.

Wainwright made his majors debut for St. Louis in 2005 and went on to make 358 starts in Cardinals jersey. He owns a 183-105 record as a starter and has a career 3.35 ERA with 2,000 strikeouts. Only Hall of Famer Bob Gibson managed to reach that mark while playing for the Cardinals.
