The St. Louis Cardinals announced a reunion with veteran first baseman Matt Carpenter on Friday. Carpenter, who started his career with the Cardinals and played a decade with the franchise, signed a one-year deal.

Carpenter played 76 games last season as a member of the San Diego Padres. He batted .176 with five home runs and 31 RBIs.

The 38-year-old player will reportedly earn $740,000, which is an MLB veteran minimum, in 2024. However, he will receive an additional $4.76 million owed to him for the upcoming season by the Atlanta Braves.

Ahead of the 2023 MLB season, Carpenter signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Padres. His struggles at the plate prompted the San Diego team to trade him to the Braves, who released him just three years later.

During his first stint with the Cardinals, Carpenter made three All-Star appearances and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2013. For his career, which also included a one-year stint with the New York Yankees, Carpenter has a .260 batting average, 1,225 hits, 175 homers, and 644 RBIs.

“When you think of players that helped shape our success in the 2000s, Matt Carpenter’s name is one that is synonymous with winning,” Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said in a statement shared by the team. “Matt showed from the very beginning of his career how hard work and determination can lead to success, and we are excited to have his leadership and experience back in a Cardinals uniform.”

After getting his career total to 200 wins, St. Louis Cardinals’ veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright is ready to walk away from baseball. Wainwright confirmed that he has no intention of pitching again in the 2023 MLB season and is officially retiring.

Wainwright made his most recent start in a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers last week. This marked his 200th win in the majors, and the 42-year-old player obviously felt that he should ride off into the sunset on a good note.

“I’ve thought a lot about it the last few days, but I’m in a really good place mentally,” said Wainwright. “No regrets about anything I ever did, no second thoughts of, am I making the right decision on pitching or retiring. I’m at peace with all of it in this spot that I’ve never been.

It was a challenging campaign for Wainwright as he dealt with injuries and failed to find a rhythm. He made 21 starts, posting a 5-11 record with a 7.40 ERA, his worst since rookie season, and 55 strikeouts.

Wainwright spent his entire career in St. Louis, making his debut in 2005. Since then, he has a 200–128 as a starter with a career 3.53 ERA and 2,202 strikeouts. He received three All-Star nods and was World Series champion with the Cardinals in 2006.

The St Louis Cardinals’ record 17-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night, following the team’s 4-0 loss to Milwaukee Brewers at the Busch Stadium in St Louis.

The Cardinals’ loss marked only the third occasion since 1900 that a winning streak of 17 games or more was ended in a shutout loss. The only other occasions were the Yankees’ 19-game streak in 1947 and the Athletics’ 20-game streak in 2002.

Daniel Vogelbach proved to be the major winner of the night, hitting a two-run homer that led the Brewers to their decisive victory without reply from the Cardinals. “Going out there and being able to put a stop to their winning streak makes you feel pretty good,” Vogelbach admitted following his team’s victory.

Despite the disappointment of the shutout loss, Cardinals coach Mike Shildt remained optimistic about his team’s ability to bounce back to winning ways. “That was a cool run. Let’s start another one,” he exclaimed.

The Cardinals next face the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, October 2nd, with the two sides facing off yet again a day later.

Legendary St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is returning for his 18th MLB season in 2021. And he’ll do it in the same uniform.

The Cardinals confirmed on their social media on Tuesday that Molina inked a new one-year deal with the organization. The team didn’t share further details about the deal, but they’re expected to do so in the coming days.

The news represents a happy ending to a saga that plagued the Cardinals for the better part of the offseason.

After the end of the 2020 campaign, the team was non-committal to bringing back Molina. Meanwhile, Molina said he wanted to continue playing and was ready to do that somewhere else if St. Louis didn’t want him. The two sides were engaged in tough negotiations for several months after that before finding a common ground in the past few weeks.

Yadier Molina is one of the most decorated and accomplished players in Cardinals history. Since his MLB debut in 2004, Molina helped the team to two World Series wins while also earning a number of individual accolades. This includes nine All-Star nods and nine Gold Glove Awards.

Molina, who played 2,025 games in the majors, has a career batting average of .281, to go with 2,001 hits, 160 home runs, and 932 RBIs.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Randy Arozarena was undeniably the biggest sensation in the 2020 MLB postseason. The 25-year-old rookie outfielder was on a tear throughout the Rays’ playoff run, breaking records for most postseason home runs with 10 and most postseason hits with 29.

Arozarena’s output obviously caught many people by surprise, and St. Louis Cardinals’ president of baseball operations John Mozeliak is on the top of this list. Mozeliak was the key man behind the Cardinals’ decision to trade away Arozarena to Tampa back in January.

Speaking with St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mozeliak said that he regrets the move now and that this miss will cause the organization to revise the way they evaluate talent.

“I will own that. That’s on me,” said Mozeliak. “You need to know your own players. We will revisit how we rank our own players and make sure that we don’t have something like this happen again.”

The trade that landed Randy Arozarena in Tampa Bay included Rays also receiving first baseman Jose Martinez. Cardinals, on the other hand, got pitcher prospect Matthew Liberatore and catcher Edgardo Rodriguez.

At the time, most people viewed Arozarena as almost a make-weight in the deal. He was considered to have talent but didn’t have the track record to be highly regarded as a prospect. Rays obviously saw more than that, and now they get to reap the benefits.
