San Antonio Spurs’ legendary head coach Gregg Popovich is extending his stay with the franchise for at least five more years. Aside from his coaching role, Popovich will continue serving as President of Basketball Operations.

The Spurs confirmed the news over the weekend but didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Popovich’s new deal with the Spurs is worth $80 million. This makes him the highest-paid head coach in the NBA again, with a $16 million annual salary. He surpassed Monty Williams, who held the title for a short period of time after signing a six-year, $78.5 million contract with the Detroit Pistons.

Gregg Popovich originally joined the San Antonio Spurs as general manager and vice president of basketball operations in 1994. He appointed himself the team’s head coach early in the 1996–97 season and has since established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the league.

Popovich led the Spurs to five NBA titles and has at least one in each of the past three decades. He won 1,366 regular-season games as a coach, which is the most by any coach in the history of the NBA. Popovich is ranked third in playoff wins with 170.

New Tottenham Hotspur interim coach Cristian Stellini has assured that the club is not facing a crisis following the departure of head coach Antonio Conte. While he admitted that Spurs endured a rocky 48 hours following Conte’s dismissal, Stellini insists that the club is in a stable predicament.

“It is not a club in crisis, absolutely not because everyone took the decision for the best,” Stellini claimed. “When you follow the process, you are not in crisis and if we have some matters, we have to be compact, we have to stick together, go ahead, continue to move on and play the match.”

Conte’s departure from the club came after he delivered a controversial news conference on March 18 when he criticized the club’s ownership as well as the attitude of the players after the team let slip a 3-1 lead against Southampton to draw 3-3. The Italian manager subsequently left the club by way of mutual consent.

Stellini joined Spurs as Conte’s assistant in November 2021 at the same time that Conte replaced previous manager Nuno Espirito Santo. He now has the job of helping Spurs hold onto fourth place in the Premier League, thereby securing Champions League qualification next season.

Tottenham Hotspur will sign Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villareal after hijacking the deal that Everton was set to sign with the player. Danjuma had already arrived at Goodison Park and performed a medical when Tottenham contacted the player in an effort to convince him to move to the North London club instead.

Danjuma will now join Spurs on loan until the end of the season, however, no option for a permanent move has been included in the agreement. It is Villareal’s hope that the move will boost the 25-year-old player’s market value before a potential permanent move is considered in the summer transfer window.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Danjuma favored a move to Tottenham as a result of the ongoing struggles that Everton is facing at present, including the recent sacking of manager Frank Lampard and the fact that the team is currently 19th in the Premier League and in the midst of a relegation battle.

Following his move from Bournemouth in August 2021, Danjuma impressed during his first season at Villareal, scoring 10 goals in La Liga and six goals in the Champions League, where the team reached the semi-finals. His involvement has been significantly less this season, however, starting just 10 games.

Friday night’s game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors saw a crowd of 68,323, making it the most attended game in NBA history. The record was set in Alamodome, a multi-purpose arena in which the Spurs played for a decade before moving to their current home, AT&T center.

The Spurs returned to Alamodome, which they previously left for good in 2002, to celebrate their 50th anniversary season. The fans didn’t miss an opportunity to join the festivities and “set the standard for the league,” as franchise legend David Robinson put it while announcing the attendance numbers.

The previous NBA attendance record was held by the game between the Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks at the now-demolished Georgia Dome on March 27, 1998. A crowd of 62,046 fans attended that night.

Unfortunately for the Spurs, the big support from the fans couldn’t lift them to a win. Golden State easily dismantled the shorthanded San Antonio team in a 144-113 win. This was the eighth loss for the Spurs in the last 10 games, causing them to fall to 13-30 and remain near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The Warriors, on the other hand, are sixth in the West with 21-21.

And while their fans are hoping the streak will be extended to 22 when the regular 2018-19 NBA season wraps up, making the playoffs is proving to be a real challenge for the Spurs this time around.

Spurs have struggled with inconsistency throughout the entire season, showing flashes of great basketball but often embarking on uncomfortable losing stretches while trying to deal with the aftermath of Kawhi Leonard trade. Now some might say that this is an obvious introduction into upcoming difficult times for the franchise, their forward Rudy Gay describes the struggles as a process of “building character.” 

“I’d love the storybook, where we’d get together and win millions of games right away,” – Gay told San Antonio Express-News. “But it’s going to take time. We’re just building character right now, that’s all.”

According to Gay, San Antonio isn’t thinking about rebuilding and are still very much interested in winning games.

“Of course we’re trying to win now,” – he added. “I mean, there are two big factors. One, we’re a new team. Two, this is not the East. You know what I’m saying? You don’t just get together and start beating everybody.”

After a mediocre first year with the San Antonio Spurs, Rudy Gay bounced back this season and has managed to cement his place in the team’s starting lineup. He is averaging 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.

San Antonio Spurs announced that their rookie guard Lonnie Walker was diagnosed with a right medial meniscus tear and will have to undergo a surgery in the coming days. Walker, who was taken 18th overall in 2018 NBA Draft, suffered the injury in the 117-93 win over Detroit Pistons on Friday.

Although the Spurs declined to give a timeline on Walker’s return, according to ESPN‘s sources, the 19-year-old will be out for six to eight weeks.

Lonnie Walker spent five minutes on the court against the Pistons, contributing with six points and one assist. He also had one turnover.

Walker’s injury, unfortunately, wasn’t the end of Spurs’ troubles. In Sunday’s game against Houston Rockets, their starting point guard Dejounte Murray was also injured and might be facing with a longer recovery period. The full extent of Murray’s injury will be revealed after an MRI on Monday.

“He’s our starting PG, and he’s worked hard over the summer to get better, and I think it was showing,” – said Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge after the game. “You just feel for him because he’s worked so hard to be ready for this season.”

If Dejounte Murray’s injury turns out to be more serious one, that will be a big blow for San Antonio Spurs who hoped that the 22-year-old could make a step forward this season and continue his development. Murray took over as Spurs’ starting point guard halfway through the 2017-18 season in which he averaged 8.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
