Real Madrid suffered one of the most shocking defeats in recent soccer memory, falling in extra time by a 2-1 final score against CD Alcoyano, a tiny club that currently plays in Spain’s third tier of the sport.

Los Blancos took a 0-1 first-half lead after an Eder Militao goal just before the break and looked to have the match in the bag until Alcoyano scored a late goal that took the game to extra time.

An Alcoyano corner resulted in a goal for Jose Solbes in the 80th minute, who was free at the post.

In extra time, Real Madrid tried to avoid a penalty kick round by scoring a game-winning goal, and things looked to fall their way when Alcoyano defender Ramon Lopez was sent off with 10 minutes to go.

However, against all odds, in a counter-attack, Madrid let in the game-winning goal as Juanan Casanova beat Andriy Lunin to his right and sent the home bench into pandemonium.

Alcoyano headed on to advance to the Round of 16, and Real Madrid continues to fall further into a hole that has them looking unlikely to challenge for any silverware this season barring a miracle.

In a bizarre final matchday in Spain’s second tier of soccer, one of the most historic and recognizable clubs in the country’s recent history suffered a demoralizing drop down to Spain’s regionalized third tier of the sport.

Deportivo La Coruña, which lifted the La Liga title in 2000, won the Copa del Rey in 2002, and participated in various Champions Leagues in the first decade of this century, finished 20th in the Segunda Division standings, sending them down to an abyss from which they may never recover.

Deportivo needed one of either Lugo or Albacete to drop points in the final match day in order to have a shot to stay in the category for the 2020-21 season. In addition, they needed to beat Fuenlabrada at their home stadium of Riazor in order to stay up.

Deportivo’s match was not even played on Monday night after news broke that 7 of Fuenlabrada’s players had tested positive for COVID-19, meaning that their match will take place on a later date.

It won’t have any significance for Depor, however, as both Lugo and Albacete managed to win on Monday, guaranteeing their safety in the country’s second division.

This means that Deportivo, once one of the top clubs in Spain and in all of Europe, will instead drop down to a category which they had not seen since the early 1980s.

Spain’s domestic football league has returned to training over two months after the league was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak as teams prepare for a proposed June return date to action.

Last week, hundreds of players and staff members from Spain’s first and second division clubs underwent coronavirus testing as a prerequisite to return to training. Five players reportedly tested positive, with three of them being members of Real Betis.

These five players will be forced to remain quarantined in their homes and will have to receive two negative test results before they are allowed back to their teams’ training grounds.

The rest of players have returned to the pitch as part of reduced groups that will spend time training individually, maintaining a significant distance away from both coaches and teammates as they look to get back in shape before returning to a team practice.

Over the weekend, it was revealed that La Liga’s current plan for the return to competition is on June 12th. These games, which will be played without fans, are expected to take place every two to three days as the league looks to finish its season before August.

If everything goes well and all players obtain negative COVID-19 test results, it seems that Spanish soccer is closer than ever to returning.
