After taking a few months off from coaching after a personal tragedy, long-time Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is back at the reigns as manager of the Spanish National Team.

Enrique departed from the national team over the summer after the untimely death of his daughter Xana. At the time, Enrique asked for privacy as he grieved this terrible tragedy, taking time to step away from the game in order to grieve.

Now, Enrique has been re-appointed Spain’s manager with only about 7 months left until the UEFA Euro 2020 competition, at which La Roja will be considered one of the favorites.

Roberto Moreno, Enrique’s former assistant manager who was given the reigns of the team after Luis Enrique’s departure, was dismissed from his job by Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales on Tuesday.

After the rumor that he would be let go leaked on Monday night, Moreno left the field in tears after Spain’s 5-0 win over Romania in Madrid.

It’s a somewhat controversial decision given the circumstances surrounding the situation, but Moreno said over the summer that he would be glad to give the job back to Luis Enrique if his former boss wanted to return.

Luis Enrique is expected to make his second debut at the helm of Spain in March as the team plays friendly matches in preparation for the summer 2020 tournament.

The Spanish Football Federation announced on Wednesday that head coach Luis Enrique had decided to step down from his position at the front of the men’s national team.

Robert Moreno, who also served on Enrique’s coaching staff at Celta Vigo, Roma, and Barcelona, will take over as La Roja’s head coach.

The circumstances regarding Enrique’s decision to leave the team have to do with personal issues. The press has respected Enrique’s privacy, not prodding into the reasons why he decided to take a step back. Some speculation has risen that one of his family members is dealing with a serious health issue, although this has not been confirmed.

Federation president Luis Rubiales stood behind Enrique’s decision at a press conference announcing his decision on Wednesday afternoon. He said that, “We have to thank Luis Enrique. We’ve learned a lot from him. We will continue to support him. He will always have the doors open in this federation. I ask the press to continue to respect him during this difficult time which is down to a personal issue.”

Enrique first left the Spanish National Team for what was deemed a temporary leave of absence back on March 26. Since then, Moreno has been in charge of the team.

Moreno will now lead Spain forward as they continue their run in the qualifiers for the Euro 2020 tournament as Enrique leaves La Roja after less than a year in charge.
