Serena Williams will play at the 2022 Wimbledon as a wild-card entry. Williams received an invite to compete at the tournament alongside five other players who didn’t automatically qualify.

Williams hasn’t played tennis since suffering a leg injury in the first round of 2021 Wimbledon. As a result, she slipped on the WTA rankings and is currently ranked No. 1223 player in the world.

The 40-year-old American has won Wimbledon seven times in the past, with her latest triumph coming in 2016. She made the finals twice at All England Club after that, in 2018 and 2019, but lost to Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep, respectively.

Since her last Wimbledon win, Williams only managed to win one Grand Slam, being triumphant at the 2017 Australian Open. After that, she made four Grand Slam finals but lost in all four. These losses were particularly heartbreaking for Williams as she is just one major title away from tying Margaret Court’s career record of 24.

The 2022 Wimbledon is set to take place from 27 June to 10 July. Novak Djokovic is the defending champion in men’s singles, while Ash Barty won’t defend her women’s singles title from 2021. Barty announced her retirement from tennis earlier this year, leaving reigning French Open winner and world’s No. 1 Iga Swiatek as the biggest favorite.

Serena Williams will have to hold off her pursuit of Margaret Court’s Grand Slam titles record after being forced to withdraw from the 2020 French Open.

Williams was set to have a second-round match against Tsvetana Pironkova on Wednesday morning, but experienced issues with her Achilles during the warmups. After brief consideration, the 39-year-old champion decided she can’t proceed and dropped out.

Williams initially injured her Achilles during her semi-finals loss to Victoria Azarenka at this year’s US Open. The current No.9 tennis player in the world hoped she would have enough time to heal before Roland Garros, but the strain turned out to be more serious than it was originally thought.

“I think I need four to six weeks of sitting and doing nothing, at least two weeks of just sitting down,” said Williams at a press conference following her withdrawal.

There is a good chance that this was the last tournament appearance for Serena Williams in 2020. When asked about her plans for the rest of the year, Williams said that its “more than likely” that she won’t make more appearances.

This is the second time for Williams to pull out of the French Open, as she withdrew from a fourth-round match against Maria Sharapova in 2018 due to a muscle injury. She has three Roland Garros titles, with the last one being in 2015.

Serena Williams’ bid to win a record 24th Grand Slam at the US Open 2020 has come to an end. Williams was eliminated from the tournament on Thursday night in the semi-finals match against No.18-ranked Victoria Azarenko.

Williams won the first set with a blowout 1-6, and it seemed like the 38-year-old star is poised to make her third consecutive finals appearance. However, Azarenko rallied back and won the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 to secure a shot for her first US Open title.

“It’s obviously disappointing,” said Wiliams after the match. “At the same time, I did what I could. I feel like other times I’ve been close, and I could have done better. I felt like I gave a lot.”

After the defeat, Williams now turns her attention to French Open, where she last won in 2015. This year’s edition of the tournament is set to start on September 21st.

Azarenko, on the other hand, will meet Naomi Osaka in the Finals of the US Open and look to win her third career Grand Slam and first since 2013’s Australian Open. The 31-year-old Belarusian played the US Open finals twice before, last time in 2013, and lost both times to Williams.

“I think seven years ago, after I won the Australian Open and stuff, and playing kind of consistently with good results, it was kind of expected for me to be in the final. I don’t think that was the case this year,” said Azarenko. “But it feels more fun this year, more fulfilling, more pleasant for me. It feels nice, nicer.”

Serena Williams isn’t showing signs of slowing down in her quest to win her eighth Wimbledon. In a  three sets match on Tuesday, Williams managed to outlast fellow American Alison Riske and get a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win to advance in her 12th Wimbledon semifinal.

Although Riske, currently placed 89 in the world, was playing her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, she still managed to provide Williams with a tough challenge. The two provided the audience an exciting match that was a nail bitter all the way to the end.

With 4-3 in the third and final set, Williams managed to stay calm under pressure and break to claim a 5-3 lead. Riske didn’t manage to recover from this, allowing Williams to finish the match on her own serve.

“You want to come to see some tennis,” – said Williams after the match. “I think, if anything, it speaks for the level of all players, the depth of the women’s field. Everyone is playing incredibly tough.”

Besides chasing her eighth Wimbledon, Williams is also trying to catch up Margaret Court’s record 24 career Grand Slams. Still, Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam wins, doesn’t feel much pressure to make this happen.

“Now it’s like I’ve done everything I need to do,” – she added. “Like, I’ve had a great career, so I don’t feel the pressure as much anymore.”

Williams will now face No.48 Czech Barbora Strycova in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Elina Svitolina is pitted against Simona Halep.

The match between Serena Williams and Simona Halep in round 32 of the 2019 Australian Open was widely regarded as “finals before finals,” and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Williams managed to outlast Halep, who is the best-ranked woman tennis player in the world and the tournament’s first seed, in a thrilling 6:1, 4:6, 6:4 clash filled with momentum swings and excellent tennis play.

The biggest moment came in the third set when Halep had three break points that would give her 4:2 lead. Still, the 27-year-old Romanian couldn’t close out the gem, with Williams managing to get 3-all and get the momentum on her side. The 37-year-old American then managed to get a 4:3 break and didn’t lose the control until the end.

“It was a really intense match, and it was some incredible points,” – said Williams after the match. “I love playing tennis and I love to play here and I love to be back out here.”

“In order for me to stay out there, I had to play a little like I knew I could,” – she added. “I’m such a fighter. I just never give up. It’s definitely something that’s innate. I just work so hard for every point.”

Serena Williams, who entered the 2019 Australian Open as the 16th seed, will now face seventh-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals. Williams is in the hunt for her eighth Australian Open title, which would also give her 24th Grand Slam title and tie her with Margaret Court on the all-time list.

Serena Williams won’t add another French Open title to her trophy cabinet, at least not in 2018. The 36-year-old announced on Monday that she has pulled out of the tournament due to a chest muscle injury. Williams announced her decision shortly before she was scheduled to play Maria Sharapova in the fourth round.

“It’s extremely disappointing,” – Williams told reporters on Monday. “But also, I made a promise to myself and to my coach and to my team that if I’m not at least 60 percent or 50 percent, then I probably shouldn’t play.

Williams explained that she will get an MRI and do further tests in order to figure out how severe the injury is and how it will affect her tennis season.

The fact that I physically can’t serve at all is a good indication that maybe I should just go back to the drawing board and stay positive, and try to get better and not get it to a point where it could be a lot worse.” – she added.

2018 French Open was the first Grand Slam tournament Serena Williams participated in since January 2017, when she won Australian Open. After the tournament, Williams revealed she was already eight-weeks pregnant and took a break from tennis. After giving birth to her daughter in September 2017, she made her return to tennis in late December of the same year, playing an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi.

Serena Williams currently has 23 Grand Slam titles, which represent the most for all tennis players in the modern era. When it comes to all-time ranking, she is second to Margaret Court, who has 24.

Although everything was set for Serena Williams to make her big competitive comeback at Australian Open, that won’t be the case. After playing an exhibition match against French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, Williams realized she isn’t ready and needs more time for a full comeback. She lost the match against Ostapenko 2–6, 6-3, [5–10].

After competing in Abu Dhabi I realized that although I am super close, I’m not where I personally want to be,” – said Williams in a statement. “My coach and team always said ‘only go to tournaments when you are prepared to go all the way.’ I can compete — but I don’t want to just compete, I want to do far better than that and to do so, I will need a little more time. With that being said, and even though I am disappointed about it, I’ve decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year.

Serena Williams won the Australian Open tournament in 2017 while she was eight weeks pregnant, and then took a break from tennis. In the meantime, she gave birth to a daughter named Alexis Olympia in September 2017 and married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian two months later.

The 36-year-old is currently sitting behind Australian Margaret Court in most Grand Slam tournament singles titles. Court won 24 titles, while Williams has 23, and she believed that she can get tied with Court at Australian Open 2018. Now, the French Open looks like a more realistic option.

Williams isn’t the only big name that will miss the first Grand Slam of the season. Former world No.1 tennis player Andy Murray also announced that he won’t be able to compete in Melbourne due to a hip injury. Novak Djokovic might not play as well and will make his decision after playing few exhibition matches next week.

Serena Williams is set to return to competitive tennis earlier than expected. According to Australian Open director Craig Tiley, Williams will “very likely” compete at the tournament and try to defend the title. Williams won 2017 Australian Open while being pregnant and didn’t compete since. She gave birth to a baby girl in September.

She’s got her visa, she’s entered, she’s practicing and she’s probably just got to find a bit more space for a bigger entourage.” – said Tiley while speaking with the Herald Sun. “There’s no question that she’ll be ready in our view and she wants to break a record that is Margaret Court’s. It would be a pretty significant accomplishment for her to be able to do that.

Serena Williams currently has 23 Grand Slam titles in her career, with 7 of them coming at Australian Open. Australia native Margaret Court, on the other hand, has 24.

Although Tiley seems to be confident about Williams participating at Australian Open, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou said that the decision wasn’t made and that Serena will make up her mind after her upcoming training session in Florida.

In case that Serena doesn’t come back in time for Australian Open, she will likely compete at Indian Wells or Miami, with both tournaments taking place in March.

The 2018 Australian Open will take place at 15-28 January 2018 and will be the 106th edition of the tournament. The tournament’s wildcard playoff will start on Monday, giving the players outside the top 100 to win a chance to compete in the tournament.
