Dallas Cowboys’ linebacker Sean Lee will have to wait a bit longer for his debut in the 2020 NFL Season. After starting the season on the injured list, Lee is now set to miss at least six more weeks, having recently undergone hernia surgery.

According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, Lee had the surgery last week, and the Cowboys hope to have him back at some point in October.

This isn’t the first time Sean Lee misses time, as the 34-year-old LB built a reputation of being injury-prone since entering the league in 2010 as Cowboys’ second-round pick. As a matter of fact, 2019 was the only season in which he played full 16 games. Lee finished the last season with 86 tackles, 1.0 sacks, one interception, and four passes defended.

Cowboys are already thin at linebacker, as they previously lost Pro Bowler Leighton Vander Esch to collarbone injury in Week 1. Vander Esch is also expected to be out at least six weeks.

Reportedly, Dallas is looking to make up for the absence of Lee and Vander Esch from within, although free-agent additions are not out of the question. The name that pop-ed up in conversations is veteran Clay Matthews, who recently failed to finalize a move to Denver Broncos. If signed, Matthews would be reunited with Mike McCarthy, who was his coach with Green Bay Packers.

The NFL career of Dallas Cowboys’ All-Pro linebacker Sean Lee was filled with ups and downs, with most of those downs being related to his struggles with injuries. This became such an issue for Lee that the 32-year-old began contemplating his future as a professional football player and even considered walking away. It seems like he still didn’t make his decision, although he is “leaning towards playing” next season as well.

“I want to continue to play the game, but I have to evaluate physically where I’m at. I definitely have some decisions to make,” – Lee told KTCK-AM 1310. “I’m leaning toward playing for sure.”

Lee won’t rush to make this decision but should know where he stands in a couple of months.

“I’m going to take a month, travel a little bit with the wife, see how I feel,” – he added. “A month or two down the line I’ll figure out where I’m at.”

Due to injuries, Sean Lee only managed to play five games in 2018 season, which opened up space for rookie Leighton Vander Esch, who earned a Pro Bowl invite, and Jaylon Smith, who received a PFF’s Breakout Player of the Year for his performances in the regular season. This makes it improbable for Cowboys to offer Lee a more significant role besides being a veteran reserve, so he might opt to look elsewhere.

In case that Lee really wants to stay in Dallas, however, he would probably have to take a pay cut, since the team can now cut him and save his $7 million salary.

Sean Lee spent his entire NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, who took him in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. During his time in the league, he earned two Pro Bowl selections and one First-team All-Pro honors. Lee’s career stats include 695 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 13 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns.
