Tiki Barber retired as the greatest running back in New York Giants’ history, managing to top 22 official Giants’ franchise records during his 10 years in the league. But he doesn’t think his name will stand in the Giants’ records book forever; instead, Barber anticipates that the team’s young star RB Saquon Barkley will take over his place.

“If he stays healthy and he stays here, in New York,” – said Barber while chatting with NJ.com. “My records don’t have a chance.”

Barber went on to say that Barkley could be one of the greatest RBs the league has ever seen, comparing him to Adrian Peterson.

“He can be one of the greatest ever,” – he continued. “Physically, he’s a freak. I’ll parallel him to Adrian Peterson. When I first met Adrian, I looked at his muscular and body structure and was just in awe. His muscles were popping out of his skin and Saquon is the same way. That portends durability. When you pair that with a passion and desire to be great, you get an Adrian Peterson. Saquon is the same type of player, but he’s much better because he’s so versatile. Adrian couldn’t catch the ball out of the backfield or line up as a wide receiver. Saquon can do that at a very high level.”

Drafted second overall in 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, Saquon Barkley already started his record-breaking campaign during his rookie season in which he rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns while also recording 91 receptions for 721 yards and four TDs.

He currently holds Giants’ franchise records for most rushing touchdowns by a rookie, most rushing yards by a rookie, and most touchdowns in a season by a rookie alongside four NFL records.

New York Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley continues to prove why he’s the number two overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. In the second quarter of Giants’ 35-36 loss to Dallas Cowboys, Barkley caught his 89th reception in 2018 season and set a record for most receptions for a rookie running back. The 21-year-old passed Reggie Bush, who had 88 receptions in 2006 season with the New Orleans Saints.

This record is just one more impressive achievement Saquon Barkley managed to pull off in his rookie season. He entered the game against the Cowboys being 114 short from having 2,000 yards from scrimmage and managed to surpass the mark in the third quarter. With this, he joined Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James as the only player in NFL history to have 2,000+ yards as a first-year player.

Barkley is also the first rookie since Billy Sims in 1980 to have at least 1,200+ rushing yards and 600 reception yards. It is important to note that Sims won the NFL Rookie of the Year the same year.

Saquon Barkley further managed to get his name written in the history of New York Giants as well by breaking several other franchise record. After scoring a touchdown against the Cowboys in the fourth quarter, Barkley broke the record for most rushing touchdowns by a rookie RB in Giants’ history with 11. The previous record was set by Bill Paschal, who had 10 rushing touchdowns in 1943.

Unfortunately, Barkley’s success was a bit overshadowed by the fact that the Giants had another bad season and finished the year 5-11.

New York Giants didn’t open the 2018 NFL season as they expected, losing to Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboy in the first two games. But despite the 0-2 record to start with, Giants know they are “much better team than that” and are not “overreacting” according to team’s rookie running back Saquon Barkley.

Yeah I don’t think we feel like we’re a much better team than that, I think we know we’re a much better team than that. I think we know that we’re so close,” – Barkley told reporters. “In this locker room, no one is overreacting. I mean obviously, I’m active on social media so I think a lot of people outside of this locker room and outside this building who are reacting. We are aware 0-2 is not a great start, but it’s not the worst thing possible.”

The 21-year-old went on to say that the team won’t allow critics to get under their skin and that they will bounce back after this rough start of the season.

New York Giants’ struggles could be attributed to several factors, but Saquon Barkley sure isn’t one of them since he is already proving that he might be worthy of the second overall pick that the Giants spent on him in 2018 NFL Draft. In his first two professional games, Barkley rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown while also adding 16 receptions for 102 yards. He will have a chance to improve these stats and maybe get a taste of a win in NFL game when the Giants face Houston Texans this Sunday.
