Star running back Saquon Barkley has heard all about trade rumors surrounding him ahead of the NFL trade deadline. But the two-time Pro Bowler wants everyone to know that his goal is to keep playing for the New York Giants.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Barkley made it clear he doesn’t want to be traded.

“Sitting here, everyone knows how I feel. Everyone knows I don’t want to get traded,” Barkley said. “I don’t think anyone in their right mind would want to get traded anywhere. It’s not an easy thing to do. You have to move. I have a family. I would love to be here.”

However, Barkley also noted that the final decision about whether he remains with the franchise or not isn’t in his hands.

“But like I said, it’s not in my control,” he added. “My focus is to be the leader I can be for this team and get this thing on the right track.”

The Giants are struggling so far in the 2023 NFL season, going 1-5 through the first six weeks. Many believe that this could prompt the team’s front office to be sellers at the trade deadline, with Barkley being their most prized asset. The 26-year-old is also set to become a free agent in the offseason, which might further incentivize the New York team to move on from him.

After rushing for a career-high 1,312 yards last season, Barkley is off to a slow start in the 2023 campaign. He missed three games due to injuries while having 207 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

The New York Giants’ memorable 31-28 comeback win against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday came with a steep price. The team’s star running back Saquon Barkley sprained his ankle and is expected to miss several games as a result.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the MRI test on Barkley’s ankle showed an “ordinary” sprain. The 26-year-old Pro Bowler is expected to miss up to three weeks before being able to return to action.

Barkley got hurt with less than two minutes left in the game after getting his ankle stuck in a pile of players. Up to that point, he rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown while also adding six catches for 29 yards and a TD.

This is bad news for the Giants’ hopes of repeating last season’s run to the playoffs but also for Barkley’s hopes of landing a big contract extension next offseason. Barkley previously accepted a one-year deal from the Giants that saw him receive more money compared to what he would get on a franchise tag. He will become a free agent after the 2023 campaign.

With Barkley out, the Giants will lean on veteran Matt Breida to carry most of the load in the running game.

“I’ve been with Matt for quite some time, he knows our system,’’ said Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll. “He’s prepared every week as if he was the starter, and that’s what they all need to do. I’d say all three of the guys work really hard and prepare as if they’re going to play an entire game.’’

The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley still have more than a month to get a new contract done. However, if that doesn’t happen, Barkley is willing to consider sitting out the entire 2023 NFL season.

The two sides have until July 17 to work out a long-term deal. If they fail to come to terms by then, Barkley would have to play out the 2023 campaign on a franchise tag. And he doesn’t seem motivated to do so at this point.

“I think that’s a conversation,” Barkley told reporters after being asked whether he would consider sitting out the season instead of playing on a franchise tag. “Like you said, that’s a card I could play. That comes up in conversation if something don’t get done by July 17.”

According to reports, the Giants previously offered Barkley a deal that would pay him $14 million annually, but the player’s representatives decided to reject the proposal. This led to some fans labeling Barkley as “greedy,” but the 26-year-old player says he doesn’t care about the money and just wants to feel respected.

“I said, ‘I want to be a Giant for life.’ This is where I want to be, and at the end of the day, it’s all about respect. That’s really what it is,” Barkley added.

Saquon Barkley finished the 2022 campaign rushing for career-high 1,312 yards while also having 10 touchdowns on the ground. He earned his second Pro Bowl nod.

After two injury-riddled seasons, the New York Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley has been on a tear to start the 2022 season. He is looking again like the Pro Bowl player he was in his rookie season, and the 2018’s second overall pick isn’t afraid to say that out loud.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Barkley said that he rediscovered his confidence and feels he’s returning to the best version of himself.

“Yeah, not to be arrogant, but when you see plays like when I went back and watched film on the touchdown run I had on Monday, making that jump cut inside a hole, making those two guys miss and finding a way to score, those are plays where it just puts a smile on your face when you’re like, ‘That is the guy I know,’” Barkley said.

Barkley is currently second in league with 317 rushing yards on 6.0 yards per carry. He also had two touchdowns on the ground while coming up with 13 catches for 91 receiving yards. The 25-year-old’s stellar performances have been one of the main reasons behind the Giants’ 2-1 start of the campaign.

“You’re going to have your ups and downs in life, but you have to find a way not to waver and trust yourself,” Barkley added. “Continue to trust the process and find belief in yourself again. I feel like I’m starting to do that.”

Saquon Barkley lit the league on fire in his first season, rushing for 1,307 yards and 11 scores while also catching 91 passes for 721 yards and 4 TDs. After a solid sophomore campaign, in which he rushed for 1,003 yards, Barkley managed to only play two games in 2020 before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Upon his return to action in 2021, Barkley noticeably struggled. He only had 593 yards rushing on 3.8 yards per carry and scored just two touchdowns. But this now appears to be an outlier since Barkley is once again putting fear into the opposition’s defenses.

Speaking with reporters during the New York Giants’ mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, running back Saquon Barkley admitted that his confidence took a big hit in recent years. The series of injuries caused the Penn State product to start questioning his body which resulted in struggles on the field. However, that now seems to be in the past.

According to Barkley, he now feels healthy and fully trusts his body. The 25-year-old player tore his ACL in Week 2 of the 2020 season and then dealt with ankle issues last season.

“I feel a lot better than I felt at this point last year. My body feels good. I’m trusting my knee again,” said Barkley.

As a result, Barkley is a lot more confident than in 2021, when he managed just 593 and two touchdowns on 3.7 yards per carry.

“Now I’m starting to get that swagger back,” he added.

The Giants now hope that this newfound confidence will prompt Saquon Barkley to put up performances he had early in his pro career. Barkley had 2,029 yards and 15 touchdowns from scrimmage in his rookie year and became the first back in franchise history to have 1,000+ rushing yards in his first two seasons as a pro.

Barkley’s recent struggles have previously made him a subject of trade rumors, but this doesn’t seem to be an option anymore. The new head coach Brian Daboll reportedly has big plans for the Pro Bowler and believes he can be an integral part of his offense in 2022 and beyond.

Things haven’t been great for New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley lately. The former second overall pick dealt with injuries in the past few seasons, and his production saw a sharp decline since his Pro Bowl days as a rookie.

Barkley’s struggles led many to question whether he’ll be with the Giants for much longer, but in the 24-year-old’s mind, there is no doubt about where his future in NFL lies. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, the Penn State product said that he wants to remain in New York and hopes this will be the place where he finishes his pro career.

“When I got drafted here, I said I want to be here for the rest of my life. I was born in New York, I’m from Pennsylvania. I live an hour and some change from my parents’ house,” Barkley said. “This is where I started my career, where I would love to finish my career.”

Barkley also believes that there are better days ahead for the New York Giants, who are 19-42 since drafting him, and plans on making a significant contribution to that cause.

“I know this thing is going to turn around, and I would love to be a part of the reason it does,” he added.

Saquon Barkley burst on the NFL scene with a stellar rookie season that saw him rush for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns. But after another 1,000+ rushing yards outing in his sophomore year, things went sideways for Barkley.

In his second game of the 2020 season, Barkley tore his ACL and had to miss the remainder of the year recovering. He recovered in time to start this season but again dealt with injuries that caused him to miss five games.

In nine games he played in 2021, Barkley was far less efficient compared to his early days in the league. He currently has 379 rushing yards on 100 carries while managing just two TDs.

It appears that the New York Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley avoided a major injury after going down in the Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. According to the team’s head coach Joe Judge, Barkley’s X-Rays results were “better news than it could’ve been,” although the Giants still don’t know how much time the Pro Bowler will miss.

“A little bit of a sigh of relief,” Judge described the feeling about Barkley’s injury situation.

Barkley got hurt in the first quarter of the Dallas game after stepping on cornerback Jourdan Lewis’ foot during one play. He had to be carted off the field and didn’t return to the game, causing Giants fans to worry.

While Judge didn’t detail Barkley’s injury, the reports indicated that the 24-year-old is dealing with a sprained ankle. He will reportedly miss the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams and should be week-to-week after that.

The injury is a tough blow for Barkley, considering he just got back from an ACL injury that limited him to two games last season. As a result of the injury, Barkley had a slow start in 2021 and currently has just 195 rushing yards on 54 carries. He did, however, contributed with two touchdowns on the ground and caught 14 receptions for 130 yards and a score.

Giants also saw quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Kenny Golladay go down with injuries against the Cowboys. Jones is currently in the concussion protocol, while Golladay is having additional tests on his knee.

Although it seemed like New York Giants’ star running back Saquon Barkley is headed to the injured reserve list following a high ankle sprain, that won’t be the case.

ESPN reports that Barkley, who suffered injury in Week 3 win over Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recently had a second opinion on his ankle and won’t have the surgery per doctor’s instructions. It is estimated that the healing process will take four to eight weeks, with the longer timetable being the most likely option.

Despite this, Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur told the reporters on Thursday that Barkley won’t be placed on IR.

“At this point, no … I want to be clear, [the plan] doesn’t involve putting Saquon on IR,” – said Shurmur.

If Giants would put Barkley on injured reserve, he would be immediately ruled out for eight weeks. By leaving him on the roster, however, the team can play him earlier if the rehab process ends up going better than expected.

“Rehab him and get him ready to go. See how that plays out,” – Shurmur added when asked about the team’s plans for Barkley.

After winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019, Saquon Barkley looked like he was poised for another big season. In the first two games of 2019, Barkley rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown while also adding seven receptions for 48 yards.

Tiki Barber retired as the greatest running back in New York Giants’ history, managing to top 22 official Giants’ franchise records during his 10 years in the league. But he doesn’t think his name will stand in the Giants’ records book forever; instead, Barber anticipates that the team’s young star RB Saquon Barkley will take over his place.

“If he stays healthy and he stays here, in New York,” – said Barber while chatting with NJ.com. “My records don’t have a chance.”

Barber went on to say that Barkley could be one of the greatest RBs the league has ever seen, comparing him to Adrian Peterson.

“He can be one of the greatest ever,” – he continued. “Physically, he’s a freak. I’ll parallel him to Adrian Peterson. When I first met Adrian, I looked at his muscular and body structure and was just in awe. His muscles were popping out of his skin and Saquon is the same way. That portends durability. When you pair that with a passion and desire to be great, you get an Adrian Peterson. Saquon is the same type of player, but he’s much better because he’s so versatile. Adrian couldn’t catch the ball out of the backfield or line up as a wide receiver. Saquon can do that at a very high level.”

Drafted second overall in 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, Saquon Barkley already started his record-breaking campaign during his rookie season in which he rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns while also recording 91 receptions for 721 yards and four TDs.

He currently holds Giants’ franchise records for most rushing touchdowns by a rookie, most rushing yards by a rookie, and most touchdowns in a season by a rookie alongside four NFL records.

After New York Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, running back and reigning NFL Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley is next in line to become the face of this franchise. And not only this, but Barkley will have to take on an even bigger offensive load in 2019.

While this might seem as overwhelming expectations from a 22-year-old, Barkley is ready to expand his role on the team. Speaking about the aftermath of Beckham’s trade and his future role on the Giants with NJ.com, he said that his main goal is to “grow as a leader more.”

“I have to grow as a leader more” – said Barkley. “Whether it’s being a vocal leader or leading by example, it’s a team effort. We have to have other players grow as leaders, continue to believe in each other.”

Barkley also revealed that Beckham talked with him after the trade and provided some advice on how to “handle stuff” in the NFL.

“We talked over Facetime, he had just gotten traded, so I don’t think he was really happy about it,” – he added. “He just gave me some advice about how to handle stuff in the league. He was the same old big brother to me that he’s always been.”

After being drafted second overall in 2018 NFL Draft by New York Giants, Saquon Barkley went on to have a monster first year in the league. He ended 2018 with 1,307 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns while also adding 91 receptions for 721 yards and four touchdowns.

Besides breaking several Giants franchise and NFL records, Barkley also earned a Pro Bowl appearance and was named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year and AP’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
