Less than a week after completing a disastrous 2023-24 NHL season, the San Jose Sharks decided to part ways with their head coach David Quinn. The franchise made the move official on Wednesday.

Speaking about Quinn’s firing, Sharks’ general manager Mike Grier said that he felt a “new, different voice for the group” was needed.

“David is a good coach and an even better person. I would like to personally thank him for his hard work over these past two seasons,” said announcing the news. “He and his staff did an admirable job under some difficult circumstances, and I sincerely appreciate how they handled the situation.”

The Sharks finished the regular season with a 19-54-9 record, the worst in the league. Additionally, their 47 points are the second-fewest since the league introduced the salary cap era. But it wasn’t all Quinn’s doing, as he was coaching a rebuilding roster that lacked impactful players.

After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons under Bob Boughner, the Sharks hired Quinn in 2022 as his replacement while also starting to tear down their roster. During the process, they moved on from several veterans, including stars Timo Meier and Erik Karlsson, leaving Quinn with not much to work with.

Quinn leaves the Sharks after compiling a 41-98-25 record in his two seasons with the franchise.

A huge trade took place just before the NHL trade deadline wrapped up on Friday. The San Jose Sharks traded their start forward Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a first-round pick in 2025 and forward David Edstrom.

As part of the trade, the Sharks are also sending two third-rounders (2025, 2027) to Vegas and will retain 17% of Hertl’s salary. Hertl signed an eight-year, $65.1 million contract with San Jose ahead of the 2022-23 NHL season.

Hertl is currently out after undergoing knee surgery in February. However, Vegas most likely made the trade with the postseason in mind, when the two-time All-Star is expected to become available.

After the trade became official, Hertl went on social media to show his excitement about joining his new team.

Before going down with the injury, Tomas Hertl was playing well and had 15 goals and 19 assists for a total of 34 points in 48 games. Hertl spent all of his 10+ seasons in the NHL with the Sharks and left the franchise having played 712 games and contributed 484 points.

The Vegas Golden Knights have been quite busy at the trade deadline as they attempt to make a run for another Stanley Cup. Prior to Hertl, they also acquired veteran winger Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals.

The San Jose Sharks’ already disappointing season is taking a turn for the worse. The team just announced that their All-Star center Tomas Hertl underwent surgery on his left knee and will be out for at least “several weeks”.

Hertl said that he has been experiencing issues with his knee throughout the season but tried to play through it. However, as the issue became more persistent, the 30-year-old player opted to get the procedure done in order to “return to 100 percent as soon as possible”.

Hertl hasn’t played for the Sharks since a 2-5 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on January 27. He did, however, make an appearance at the NHL All-Star game at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena earlier this month, spending 12 minutes on the ice.

“After returning from Toronto and having additional conversations with my family and our team medical staff over the last week, I made the decision to have this procedure done now so that I can return to 100 percent as soon as possible,” Hertl said in a statement provided by the team. “I look forward to returning to the ice and getting back with my teammates as soon as I can.”

Hertl, who received his second career All-Star nod in 2024, has been the Sharks’ best player this season. In 48 games played, he recorded 15 goals and 19 assists for a total of 34 points.

The Sharks are currently in the running to have the worst record in the league at 14-32-5, which would give them the best odds for the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

The San Jose Sharks announced on Wednesday that they will retire legendary center Joe Thornton’s No. 19 jerseys.

Thornton will become only the second player in Shark’s history, following Patrick Marleau, to have his jersey retired by the franchise. His jersey retirement ceremony will take place in the 2024-25 NHL season, with the date yet to be determined.

Joe Thornton played 24 seasons in the NHL before retiring in 2023. He spent 15 years with the Sharks while also suiting up for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Florida Panthers. Thornton received six All-Star nods while winning the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy in 2006. He finished his career with 430 goals, 1,109 assists, and 1,539 points in 1,714 games.

During his time in San Jose, Thornton became the Sharks’ all-time leader in assists (745) and points per game (1.01). He ranks second in points ((1,055) and third in games played (1,104). Thornton also helped the franchise reach its first and only Stanley Cup Finals appearance to date in 2015–16.

It has been an honor and a privilege to play in the National Hockey League for 24 seasons,” said Thornton in a statement. “But when I came to San Jose, it felt like I was truly home. I fell in love with the area and the people, and I had the best years of my career wearing the Sharks crest. I want to thank Hasso Plattner, the Sharks organization, my teammates, our fans and especially my family for all their support over my career. I am humbled by this recognition, which is a reflection of all of those great teams we had in San Jose during my time there.”

After a thorough head coaching search, the San Jose Sharks finally have their man. According to Sheng Peng of NBC Sports, the Sharks will hire ex-New York Rangers head coach David Quinn to lead their bench.

San Jose’s general manager Mike Grier previously sent out an email to media members about a press conference on Tuesday morning in which he’ll “introduce the next head coach of the San Jose Sharks.” However, he didn’t specify who is the head coach he chose.

Quinn will take over from Bob Boughner, who was fired earlier this month. The move came after the Sharks finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 32-37-13 record and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Shortly after, the franchise also installed a new general manager in Grier.

David Quinn’s only NHL head coaching job was with the Rangers, whom he led for three seasons between 2018 and 2020. He compiled a 96-87-25 record and led the franchise to one Stanley Cup Playoffs trip that ended in Qualifying Round.

Quinn also coached Boston University for five years, posting a 105–69–21 record with the program. His biggest success came in 2014–15 when he led Boston to the NCAA championship game.

The San Jose Sharks have fired their head coach Bob Boughner. The team announced the decision on Friday while confirming that Boughner’s assistants John Madden, John MacLean, and Dan Darrow are also leaving the organization.

Boughner’s departure comes after the Sharks finished the 2021-22 NHL season with a 32-37-13 record. This marked the third-straight time the franchise missed the playoffs with Boughner in charge.

“The bottom line is we have missed the playoffs for the past three seasons, which isn’t acceptable to our owner, our organization, or to our fans,” said Sharks’ interim general manager Joe Will in a team-released statement.

Boughner’s exit will now give the Sharks a chance for a fresh start. The organization is currently searching for a new general manager after long-term executive Doug Wilson stepped down from his role in April due to health issues. After the new GM comes to the building, he will be able to hand pick the coach he wants and kick off a new era for the franchise.

Bob Boughner was initially awarded the head coaching job on an interim basis after Peter DeBoer was let go midway through the 2019-20 season. Despite the poor finish of the campaign, Boughner kept the job full-time as the organization looked for some stability. However, things didn’t work out as the Sharks envisioned, and they will now hope their next hiring finally changes the team’s fortunes.

Next season will be Thornton’s 23rd season playing in the NHL. Thornton had just seven goals and 24 assists in 70 games playing with the San Jose Sharks last season.

Thornton was drafted first overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL draft. Over the course of seven years with the Bruins, Thornton tallied 169 goals and 285 assists. He was then traded to the Sharks in the 2005-2006 season.

Veteran forward Patrick Marleau will suit up for San Jose Sharks once again. The team announced on Tuesday that they have signed Marleau to a one-year deal, worth league minimum ($700,000).

Marleau returns to the Sharks after the team traded the 41-year-old to Pittsburgh Pirates in February so he could have a chance to win a Stanley Cup title.

By returning to the Sharks, Marleau will now get a chance to break Gordie Howe’s record of most games played in NHL. Howe is at the top with 1,767 regulars season games while Marleau has 1,723.

Marleau already holds numerous Sharks’ franchise records, including being an all-time leader in goals, points, and consecutive games played.

“Patrick is one of the most iconic players in San Jose Sharks history, as well as being one of the most respected veterans in the National Hockey League,” said general manager Doug Wilson following Marleau’s return. “The leadership he brings on and off the ice has been well documented over his fantastic NHL career, and his competitive fire to win is still burning strong. Patrick’s lead-by-example demeanor is inspiring and continues to resonate with our group of younger players.”

Sharks’ second overall pick in 1997, Patrick Marleau spent the first 19 years of his NHL career in San Jose. During that span, he made the All-Star team three times while serving as the team’s captain between 2003 and 2009.

In 2017, Marleau entered the free agency for the first time in his career and decided to sign with Toronto Maple Leafs. At the time, he said that he wanted to return to Canada while also believing Maple Leafs will give him a better chance of winning the Stanley Cup.

Marleau lasted two seasons in Toronto, failing to win the trophy, before being traded to Carolina Hurricanes in a salary cap-influenced move. Hurricanes bought the veteran out of his contract, allowing him to return to the Sharks at the start of the 2019/20 season.

In 1,723 NHL games he played, Marleau scored 562 goals and dished 626 assists for a total of 1,188 points.

It looks like the San Jose Sharks are pleased with the work that Bob Boughner did as an interim head coach in 2019/20, as they are now awarding him with the job on a full-time basis.

The Sharks announced on Tuesday that Boughner officially lost the “interim” tag and will take over as the ninth head coach in the franchise’s history.

Boughner started the season as one of the team’s assistants but took over in December after Peter DeBoer got fired. He led the team in 37 games and compiled a 14-20-3 record, which was enough for the Sharks’ front office to give him a vote of confidence.

“Bob did a tremendous job last season, getting our group back to playing with identity and structure that we need in order to be successful,” said general manager Doug Wilson. “We saw a marked improvement in our play in several key areas during the second half of the season, before losing some key players to injury.”

Before joining San Jose, Bob Boughner spent two seasons as a head coach with Florida Panthers. Boughner had an 80-62-22 record with the Panthers but missed on playoffs in both years and was fired after the 2018/19 NHL season.

Boughner now looks to do better with the Sharks and believes he can create a winning team in San Jose.

“I’ve been in contact with many of our players over the break, and, as a coaching staff, we are going to make it clear that our team is going compete every night, play hard and be a tight group on and off the ice,” said Boughner.

San Jose Sharks’ season is turning from bad to worse. After going 3-7 in their last 10 games and falling to the sixth spot in Pacific Division, Sharks have now lost their captain Logan Couture to a broken ankle injury.

Couture suffered the fracture in Tuesday’s loss to St. Louis Blues after his left leg hit the end board midway through the second period. After going through tests the day after, it was determined that he will have to miss up to six weeks while recovering.

“It’s big-time concerning. Even if it’s a couple games or a couple weeks … he’s a captain, he’s a leader, a catalyst for our offense,” said Sharks’ coach Bob Boughner. “If he’s missing out of our lineup, that’s a big loss. I think that other guys are going to have to step up in his absence, for sure.”

Couture’s loss might prove costly for Sharks’ attempts to turn around their season. The 30-year-old was Sharks’ best player so far, contributing with 14 goals and 22 assists while being selected for the All-Star Game.

Logan Couture spent his entire NHL career with San Jose, who took him ninth overall in 2007. He holds the franchise record for most goals scored in rookie-season with 32 while having two All-Star selections to his name. Couture’s NHL stats include 240 goals and 267 assists in 663 appearances.

Sharks are currently riding a 19-22-4 record, being nine points behind the last wild-card spot.
