The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch inked new extensions with the franchise.

The team shared that the pair inked “multi-year” extensions but didn’t disclose exact duration or financial terms of the deal. Shanahan was previously under contract through the 2025 season, while Lynch had a deal that ran through 2024.

Shanahan and Lynch joined the 49ers together in 2017 and were tasked with changing the franchise’s fortunes after years of instability and disappointing performances. The pair embarked on a painful two-year rebuild that saw them win 10 games combined before going on an impressive run.

With Shanahan and Lynch in charge, San Francisco posted a 42-24 record in the past four years. The 49ers reached the NFC Championship game three times during that period and have appeared in Super Bowl LIV. 

The 49ers are expected to be among the main Super Bowl contenders this year as well. They have a 3-0 record to start the season and delivered all three wins in a convincing fashion. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they improve to 4-0, considering they are facing the rebuilding Arizona Cardinals team in Week 4.

After the 49ers’ 13-3 regular season record and NFC title, the team has decided to reward their head coach with a new six-year contract, keeping him in the Bay Area through the 2025 season.

Shanahan only managed a combined 10-22 record in his first two seasons with the Niners as the team underwent a painful rebuilding process.

However, after a much-improved defense and a standout season from new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led them to the top of the NFC last season, it became apparent that despite the team’s obvious struggles in 2017 and 2018, Shanahan had been building the base to a winning team.

After dispatching of the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game, the Niners fell short in the Super Bowl, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs by a 31-20 final score.

While they were unable to cap their “worst to first” season with a Super Bowl win, it was a dream season in many ways for Niners fans.

Now, the franchise’s good days will look to continue on for the foreseeable future under Shanahan as the team finds some much-needed stability in the post-Jim Harbaugh era.
