Quinn Cook has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings, a source revealed to ESPN on Monday. This comes after the 29-year-old player worked out with the Kings in Las Vegas during the NBA summer league in July.

Cook is expected to compete for the Kings’ third point guard spot, while his experience is largely expected to help boost the performances of the team’s younger points guards, De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell.

The point guard has played 188 NBA games throughout his career, averaging 6.4 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.7 rebounds. During this time, he has racked up a wealth of playoff experience, winning the NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2018 and again with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

During the 2020-21 season, Cook left the Lakers for the Cleveland Cavaliers and played a combined 23 games for both teams that season. His final game that season came when the Cavs took on the Lakers on March 26, 2021. As the season wound down to a close along with his contract, Cook was unable to find a new team in the NBA. As a result, he played with the Stockton Kings in the NBA G League.

The team has entered in a series of bad games since January, dealing with poor defense and locker room issues, so something needed to be done to keep their NBA Finals hopes alive. The Kings got Iman Shumpert and a 2020 second-round pick from the Cavs and Joe Johnson from the Jazz. Finally, the Jazz got Jae Crowder and Derrick Rose from Cleveland.

The last trade saw Dwyane Wade heading back to the Miami Heat, with the Cavs getting a heavy protected second-round draft pick.

While there will lots of analyzing of these deals in the upcoming days, when the dust settles, the first impression is that the Cleveland Cavaliers got better with all these trades. Although the team won’t have much time to settle into a rhythm, the Cavs got younger, more athletic and in theory should be better on the defensive end. The reports say that the Cavs are willing to give up guard Iman Shumpert and forward Channing Frye in order to get Hill from the Kings. Also, they might need to include a second-round draft pick in order to sweeten the deal.

George Hill turned down an extension offer from the Utah Jazz in the offseason in order to sign with the Kings but has been unhappy with his role and the team’s overall performance. He has been averaging 10.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in this season for the Kings. The Cavs view Hill as a good addition to their roster due to his defensive abilities and hope he could help their struggling defense. The Cavaliers are currently ranked 29th in the NBA in defensive rating.

In order to make the trade work, Sacramento Kings would have to open two roster spots. The sources are saying that forwards Malachi Richardson and Skal Labissiere are among the players that could end up being traded away.

George Hill was drafted in 2008 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, who took him with the 26th overall pick. After three seasons, the Spurs traded Hill to the Indiana Pacer in 2011 in exchange for a 15th overall pick in that year’s draft, Kawhi Leonard. After a struggling first season, Hill became a starter for the Pacers and developed into a reliable player. He was traded once again in 2016 to the Utah Jazz in a three-team deal which involved the Atlanta Hawks. After averaging a career high in points (16.9) during his time with the Jazz, Hill decided to reject their contract offer in order to sign with the Kings.
