Problems keep piling up for the Sacramento Kings ahead of the NBA restart in Orlando. The team confirmed on Monday that their forward Marvin Bagley III injured his foot during practice.

Kings’ head coach Luke Walton told reporters that injury occurred on Sunday. Bagley was trying to get a rebound and landed on another players’ foot in the process.

According to the team statement, Bagley is scheduled to undergo an MRI test that should determine the extent of his injury and whether he’ll miss time.

Bagley, who was Kings’ No.2 overall pick in 2019, struggled with injuries for the better part of this season. This limited him to just 13 games, in which he averaged 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Besides Marvin Bagley, Kings also have D’Aaron Fox on the list of injured players. Fox has a sprained ankle and will most likely be out for one week before returning to action.

Sacramento is currently without Harrison Barnes, who tested positive for coronavirus and is in quarantine. Previously,  Buddy Hield, Jabari Parker, and Alex Len all had positive tests as well but have recovered in the meantime.

Sacramento Kings are currently on a three-game winning streak, but their playoff chances remain slim. And it seems like they will face even bigger odds in the future as their talented second-year forward Marvin Bagley might not play again this season.

Bagley is currently out with a left mid-foot sprain he aggravated back in January. The team announced towards the end of the month that the 20-year-old would be examined in three weeks, after which the decision will be made on his return. But the player himself acknowledged over the weekend that sitting out for the rest of the season is a real possibility.

Still, he remains positive about the outcome.

“I’m definitely going to try to come back this year, but that’s too far ahead at this point,” said Bagley. “The most important thing for me right now is to make sure I’m healthy. Honestly, who knows, I’m just going one day at a time with this, I’m trying not to think too far ahead.”

After playing 62 games in his rookie season and earning an NBA All-Rookie First Team nod, Marvin Bagley managed to play only 13 games in 2019/20 due to injuries. Bagley first broke his right thumb in the season opener, and then injured his foot in December, before aggravating the injury several weeks later.

During the 13 games he was on the court, Bagley averaged 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Sacramento Kings announced on Thursday that they have picked up the fourth-year option on De’Aaron Fox’s rookie contract and third-year option on Marvin Bagley’s rookie deal. The news was confirmed by Kings’ general manager Vlade Divac.

Kings also made the decision not to pick up fourth-year options on Caleb Swanigan and Harry Giles’s contract. While not exercising Swanigan’s option was understandable, given his lack of production, passing on Giles was unexpected.

Despite his struggles with injuries, Giles was coming off an encouraging 2018/19 season in which he averaged 7.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while playing 58 games.

According to sources close to the Kings’ organization, the team still has long term plans for Harry Giles and is focused on his development. Despite this, Sacramento felt that the $4 million option was too much for a player with a long history of serious injuries.

Giles, who was selected 20th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, missed his entire rookie season due to concerns about his knees, on which he had surgeries while being prep athlete. This year, he missed the summer league and training camp due to a quad contusion and is yet to make an appearance in the regular season due to soreness in his knee.

Both Swanigan and Giles will be unrestricted free agents next summer.

The season opener against Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night turned out to be bad for Sacramento Kings for a number of reasons. Kings did not only suffer a blowout 124-95 loss, but also saw their second overall pick in 2018 draft Marvin Bagley III go down with an injury.

Kings announced on Thursday that Bagley suffered a thumb fracture in the game against Suns and that he will miss four to six weeks while recovering. This means the 20-year-old could miss between 15 and 20 games.

This represents a tough loss for Sacramento, especially since Bagley had a strong outing in the opener. He finished the game with a double-double, getting 14 points and 10 boards, while also adding one steal and one block.

Although his rookie season with Sacramento Kings got off to a shaky start, Marvin Bagley III still managed to have a successful first year in the NBA. Bagley played 62 games (four starts) and averaged 14.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game as a rookie. He also earned NBA All-Rookie Team honors in the process.

Phoenix Suns had the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and decided to use it well, selecting Arizona’s big man Deandre Ayton with the pick on Thursday night. There were rumors that Suns might trade the pick but decided not to pass on the chance to have a No.1 overall selection for the first time in the franchise’s history.

Sacramento Kings were next on the clock and decided to select Duke’s power forward Marvin Bagley III. There were speculations that the Kings might go all in for Slovenia and Real Madrid’s wonder kid Luka Doncic but still stuck with a more popular choice. Dallas Mavericks, on the other side, were so amazed by Doncic’s talent that they have decided to move up in the draft in order to get him.

Atlanta Hawks decided to trade their 2018 NBA Draft third overall pick to Mavericks in exchange for their fifth overall pick and lightly protected 2019 first round pick. Mavs used their newly acquired pick to get Luka Doncic.

With the fourth overall pick, Memphis Grizzlies selected Michigan’s Jaren Jackson Jr., while Hawks used the Mavericks pick to take Oklahoma’s Trae Young. Orlando Magic drafted talented big man Mohamed Bamba from Texas with the sixth pick, while Chicago Bulls also took a center with the seventh pick, Duke’s Wendell Carter. Cleveland Cavaliers used the Brooklyn Nets pick they acquired from Boston Celtics to take Alabama’s point guard Collin Sexton.

Interesting thing was that Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr., who was considered to be among top three talents in the draft class, slipped down all the way to the 14th spot, where he was selected by the Denver Nuggets. Reportedly, Porter’s back problems scared away teams and they just didn’t want to take that risk.

2018 NBA Draft also saw Philadelphia 76ers trading their tenth overall selection, Villanova’s Mikal Bridges, to Phoenix Suns in exchange for Suns’ 16th overall selection, Texas Tech’s Zhaire Smith, and Miami Heat’s unprotected 2021 first-round pick.
